Holy freaking Moley ........ haven't checked in on this for a month.
Way to go!

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) VIDEO UPDATE

Did some work today on the exhaust. It almost done. I have a guy that is going to help me bend my exhaust and make the pieces I need to finish hooking up the mufflers. They will tuck behind the frame (near the rear shock). I am really happy with the way it is turning out. I drilled the welds and removed the collars that were on the stock headers and welded them unto the new headers they fit perfectly. This allows me to use the sock gaskets, collars and flanges to attach the exhaust. I think it looks pretty sweet, if I do say so myself.

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Good job! I like how the exhaust is turning out. Hard to really tell from the pic, but does the kickstarter touch the exhaust? Plans for an exhaust shield? Keep up the good work.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

thanks, The kick starter is hitting the exhaust in the picture but It wont when I'm done. The header pipes are going to get a bend in them so they will slip behind the frame. A heat shield wont be needed. once everything gets tucked away, the frame will be between my leg and the exhaust

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Really liking this bike. Well done so far. The exhuast will look factory and clean when you finish it for sure.

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Really slick idea on the seat there, pal. Impressive.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

I'm liking the pipes. I always liked a well executed high pipe setup and custom one-offs are better yet.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) RUNNING VIDEO!

I FINALLY got my exhaust finished. I also got the bike running which was my goal over spring break. It isn't running great but It is running so that's a good sign. I made a temp chain and rigged up a fuel bottle and battery and rode it around the house a few times. Whoo Hooo!

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Oh yeah, that's frickin awesome! Now you need to do that little tank extension I mentioned earlier so you can stick all those electronic goodies in there ;)

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Thanks Pete, I wish the battery location was my biggest problem........I am going to have air cleaner issues. The exhaust had to come very close to the carbs to clear the rear shock and the frame rail. The guy bending my pipe tried to give me room but I'm concerned it isn't enough. I really don't want to have to hack into the exhaust AGAIN, so I need some ideas. I will try to get some pictures of my problem. I thought about trying to make some sort of an air box or collector that would use a single filter..................

Hmmmm.... pic's definitely required! Detailed shots of the area may help...

Re: Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

I think the airbox idea is a good one. You can make it to your own exacting spec and eliminate extra baffles or such.

WHat I would do, is build a manifold for each side that wraps around to the outside of the bike, with a flat filter of the same basic type used on lawn mowers. If this is going to be a tracker/dual sport style bike, you mostly want reliability, accessibility, and functionality, and having just massive amounts of airflow contributes mostly to horsepower propagation and not necessarily torque.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Def fairly tight.

Im not sure what i would do, first part that concerned me a little but is prob not a concern is the closeness of pipes to carby body itself re heating up the bowl after riding for a while ?

Next thing i would check which im not sure effects bigger capacity 4 strokes that much is the length of the distance between carby and filter, most manufactures design it how they see works best with the particular motor and get a tuned length etc.

Im guessing you dont want to just run pod filters directly off carbys ? they will prob fit but not best if bike is going to see some dirt / water.

If it was me id see what stock motor/bike airbox was like in overall capacity and distance from carbys and try to replicate that although will obviously have to be a different shape and prob longer in length for space available.

Being a mono shock really makes my idea buggered (just clicked) as i was thinking a Y piece to join carbs to one central inlet then a narrow but long airbox. - wont work :(

other way depending on plastics etc could you try running old school side filters using rubber elbows & Brackets ?

All really depends on exactly what the bike is to be once built, if never going full offroad etc id prob settle for small pod filters directly onto carb for now and continue to research other ideas in future.

Good luck mate, look forward to seeing other ppls advice and what path you head down. Intended use of bike would def give ppl a better idea of what options are ideal

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Thanks for the advice.....I also thought about heat near the carbs. I will be wrapping the piped in glass so that should help. As far as uses of this bike go..It will be seeing off road use. I'm not a big water/mud guy so dust will be the biggest concern. I wanted to run 2 stage UNI filters. The worst case scenario is to cut the exhaust and change the pipe angle behind the frame. That is going to be my last resort though. Ive already got way to much time/money in this exhaust system.

Re: Yamaha xs400 (Tracker/dual sport) EXHAUST UPDATE!

Yeah i deliberately didnt mention butchering the exhaust after seeing all your efforts on that front.

its tricky, if it was me id want some kind of sealed box setup which i think will be tricky to achieve in the space you have.

cheers
