Another problem I am having is that I have two xt350 fuel tanks with the gas caps locked. Any idea of how I can get them off. I have several Yamaha keys but none of them work. Does anyone know of an aftermarket cap that will work. Oem caps cost more than what I payed for the bike. Thanks
Go visit Big Rich's cafe thread and have a look at his airbox.
Once you move all those electrics, you could make that whole area under the seat an airbox with an inlet either side in the triangle and a filter accessible from underneath for cleaning/oiling.
Then you just need two rubber hoses from the carbs to the front of the airbox.
You could make the whole thing a bit of a design piece if you do it right... and if you're still planning on the lattice work under the seat it would look even more cool...
If you're concerned about damaging other parts, a hammer and a bottle of refrigerant gas. CO2 might work too, but I haven't had a filled bottle to try yet.
brilliant, that was good to hear some more advice for you mate, i was thinking similar to the long flat under seat option, just wasnt sure if monoshock would get in the way.
So I guess everyone likes the kawi tank... I do like how it looks too. I still think the XT tank will fit the look better once the seat it in place, but I'm not completely convinced one way or the other at the moment. I look forward to when I get to the stage of making only cosmetic decisions. I'm still farting around with the air box and battery location. I did take a look a big rich's air box. That look great and was well done. It gave me some good ideas.
If you're doing an adventure type bike, the XT tank and 21 is right. If you're doing the actual flat tracker style the Kaw tank is much closer to right as would be a 19 or 18" front wheel.
Well I got some wiring sorted out and finished my lighting in the rear. I am still working on the air cleaner setup. I also got tired of trying to pick the lock on my gas cap....so I drilled the lock mutilating everything in and around the keyhole. I got the cap off though. I decided to make my own "custom" cap so I fired up the lathe. I like seeing chips it means I am actually getting something done. The cap is still in the rough. I have some more work to do to it, but you get the idea.
Drool.
Great build! But....
one more vote for the Kaw tank. The XT tank just looks clunky compared to the rear cowl and seat. Maybe you could find a similar but larger tank?
The Yami tank would be more utilitarian if you were really going to use this thing off road, due to the shape and friendly profile for elevation changes.
THat said, if this is going to be more of a flat-tracker/dual-sport type bike, THe Kawasaki tank flows a *lot* better.
Yeah that is why I am going with the xt tank. I am building this bike to be a dual sport. Not a show bike. I want somthing for exploring the back country so I am going with the Xt tank the kawi tank may look good in that profile picture but it really doesn't fit well and would be a real nut smasher when manuvering over obstacles while standing.
