Cleeuw,
If I could get that carb from you that would be so awesome. I really just need the body. I'll PM you when I get home and we can work something out. Thanks again.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Awesome! I think you have changed my mind on what I'm doing to my exhaust. Going with the shorty mufflers. Probably going to get a cb400t seat as well. How much did you shave off? Great job so far. It looks awesome!

I shaved off a fair amount. Probably like 3 or 4 inches? But the upholster built it up some. I was gonna try and do it myself, but I don't know dick about sewing so I found a guy to do it and was pretty pleased with the result. I haven't gotten the engine started yet so I'm not sure how the exhaust will sound.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Cool it looks great! I was planning to get one of those seats but upon further research I found that the frames of the cm400's and the cb400's are quite different. The seats aren't interchangeable so I'll probably be making my own seat eventually.

Hey guys,

Here's another picture of mine. I'm about where I want to be with it. However, I can't get it to run. I'm thinking it might be a problem with my carbs.

Wow it looks really great! Carb problem seem to be pretty common on these bikes. I need to rebuild mine.

Did you check the jets in the carbs I sent you? I'm pretty sure they weren't matching.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Hmm...well I cleaned them out but I didn't check to see if they were matching. I'm probably going to have to change the jets anyways, but would that cause it to not even start? It ran before I tore it down, and I have spark. The plugs weren't wet after kicking it about 20 times, so maybe its not getting fuel?

Oh, and thanks again for those carbs cleeuw. You saved me a bunch of money.

I have a cm400 bratted out in some other thread here. But just got an old 81 cm400t on Saturday from
My wife's boss. Hasn't started
Since 94. But they seem fairly
Easy to get going, electric ignition, relatively self timing. I need to kreem the tank (that always makes me cringe when I say it)

Master cylinder up front is working but I think I'm dropping the mags and going with a set of old 250 spoked wheels. (21 and 16) Chopping the frame and girders right to curve. Airbox ripped out. All flat black, side dented cb360 Tank, and clubmans. Probably gonna need to extend the swingarm unless Glenn Danzig or a midget buys it

Simple build little bit of tuning, minimal wiring, 2 wheels, a seat, a lot black paint and bars. Probably need to bring the forks down 2 inches or so. quick grand in the spring.

Anyone need a perfect
Stock cm400t seat, windshield, gauges, sissybar or luggage rack? Get at me

Also the mags will
Probably be available too

hi guys - great to see so much interest in the 400t/n 's.

Slowly getting stuff done on mine but im a bit stuck for parts. would anyone know where I could get an intake manifold for the 1982 cb400n? im also looking out for some bellmouth intakes. thanks.

Glad to see a revival of this thread and some "New Blood / Energy" thrown in.

Get your build threads started and PM me a link, I will add it to the "Master List" on page one.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Hey guys,

I got few questions.

The manual says that the compression is 9.3:1 ( about 136psi).

I checked the compression on mine and it's 165(left) and 155( right). How is this possible? Can there be a bigger compression than the manual says? Two of the gaskets are also leaking so I would assume that the compression would be a bit higher with the new gaskets.

In fact I am thinking of restoring the engine, only externally though. It seems that the the crank covers had only a clear coat on them. Now it's flaking off and I am determined to clean all of that up.

Also do you guys know anyplace that I could get a new petcock? My current one is leaking and it needs to be replaced I think. I don't know if it's rebuildable.

One last question, the bike is missing a reserve line or whatever it's called. It kind of bothers me because I have already been stranded twice in the middle of interstate highway without gas. Had to freaking push the bike to the nearest exist lol. Where can I buy the neccessary stuff to put in a reserve?

thanks in advance,

hubert

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

As far as I know the reserve is in the tank. The petcock has three positions. On, off, and reserve. Well thats how mine is.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Pony is right. The Petcock is supposed to have 2 tubes that project into the tank, an "inner" and an "outer". The "outer" acts as a strainer/filter as it has Verticle openings in it that are screened with a fine mesh. The second "inner" tube acts as a diverter for fuel flow. When the petcock is in "On" Mode it only draws fuel through the inner tube. since the inner tube projects up into the tank a few inches, the fuel below the upper end of the tube is your reserve. There is a hole in the top of the metal portion of the petcock that when switched to reserve draws the fuel through the hole that is below the inner tube giving you a little more gas to get to the station.

As I recall the petcocks on these bikes/tanks not be rebuilt, as they are presed together (Unlike many other Honda petcocks that can be easily disassmbled and thus rebuilt) and OEM New Petcocks can be stupid expensive, buying a used one is no guarantee it will be any better than the one you have.

I found an "atv go cart" petcock on ebay that worked on my bike and much cheaper than a OEM honda one. I tried to find the exact one from the exact seller but they do not appear to still be active on ebay at least under the same name. I did find this one for $11.99 free ship. I think this one should work, but check your measurements.

Bottom line if you have a leaky petcock and problems with no reserve, replacing the petcock should fix both. Depending on the tube lengths of the pet cock you may end up with a little more or less "Reserve". Just dont get one with too long of tubes as they may hit the inside side of the tank and bend.

Hope this helps.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Awesome! Thanks guys!

I will go do the measurements of the petcock and see if the one from ebay will work.

What do you guys think of the compression measurements that came back from the engine?

Is it okay if it has more compression than the manual says that it suppose to have?

Sorry I am a noob and I didn't even know about compression test when I bought this bike. I was a pretty lucky that i didn't end up with some almost dead engine.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Don't feel bad. I'm new to bikes too. Got to start somewhere. I have alot of car experience though and lucky for me internal combustion engines and very similar no matter the size or what they are in. they all have the same basic components. But it is easier to work on bikes because there is alot less on them than cars haha.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

These are great bikes... They make you use your brain. There are'nt any mail order "cool" parts for them. Motors are pretty resilient too! Mine was fun....

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

I installed the new petcock today. It works like a charm!
Can't say that the quality is awesome but for $12 I couldn't care less. it doesn't leak so that's all that matters.

I have to say though, I am getting pretty tired of this bike. It seems like every other week a new cable is breaking. I already had to replace the speedo then throttle cables. Just two days ago the choke cable broke too. Sigh... they did last like 30 years though so can't camplain that much.

Re: So you bought a CM400 / CB400T, now what...(46+ Build Links!)

Glad to hear it - Glad I could help. yea But $12 that works compared to $60+ for oem.......And yo have a reserve now right?

FYI, along with change oil and plugs and filters on the to do list when you get an old bike, add lube cables ;)
