Squirley's Kawi H1 build thread

Jens, although they look very nice, you may want to re-think the k&n air filters that you have on there. They have been known to cause tuning issues on the triples. They really don't like the big flat plate that is on the back of the filters. Filter of choice is usually foam uni's. Other than that, keep up the good work. :)

Not to fight with you or anything Oxford, but I say he should at least try running the K&Ns first.

I've had some big problems with the UNI filters getting clogged with 2 stroke oil from carb blowback. I got it jetted in perfect, the filter clogged with oil, and it seized my bike  . I switched to the K&Ns and haven't had a problem with them. The main problem with jetting them right is having everything else set up the same. Pipe dimensions have to be exactly the same, as with porting, float heights, etc. Your problems will show up more and more as you increase the air flow through the engine. Faster bikes need more exacting tolerances and better flowing filters.

It's his bike, the k-n should work ok, but I wanted to let him know that there may be tuning issues. Sorting a new build is bad enough, but when your starting with a known bad variable and then chasing your tail looking at other thing isn't fun. Its not the actual filter part that is the problem, its the big flat plate that is on the back of them that causes issues. There are many topics of this on the triples board, maybe some bikes don't see this issue, but the kawi triples in general don't really like them, although I think some are running them with ok results.

Did you pre-oil the unis before you put them on? I always heard to put them on dry and let the oil in the mixture oil them on blowback.

Well, swingarm came back from the chromer... Getting everything assembled slowly.

Hey...I recognize that MB in the background...can't wait to hit the doubles on it...

Mine were oiled with filter oil. But, this topic could be turned into a thread of it's own and I don't want to hijack, so I'll let it rest there.

The bike is coming together really nicely. I love getting fresh parts to put on- especially when they bolt right on. I always seen to get parts "finished" then end up hacking them up again and repainting haha.

I can't get over how clean your bike is. Can't wait to see it all together.

YO, SON! Post that pic with the new tail...I think it looked pimp now that you're running a modern style swing arm.

Hey guys, as much as I want to say that I am done with the bike, that is not the case.
Trying to get a startup going has been taking all my time, but weekends are becoming free again, so I am going to try and have this thing running by two weekends from now.
On another note, I went to check out a CNC for the business, and ran across a guy that was an engine rebuilder. We started talking about bikes, and before you know it he says...

"Do you know who Kenny Roberts is?"
I said "Absolutely!"
He said "the guy next door has one of his old bikes"
I said "Really? Can we check it out"... not really believing it was gonna be a true bike

So we go next door and this guy has a ton of cool bikes. Most importantly, he had two tz 750 trackers, one of which was a Kenny original. He also had the WORLDS FASTEST INDIAN! I'm not talking about a remake or movie copy...He Had the REAL DEAL! It was too cool.
Unfortunatley, the Indian pics didn't come out, but here's some of the TZ.

Anywho, look for updates soon on this beast!

Good update. Rooting for the success of your start up. What a treat to see the Roberts bike! I get goosebumps every time I see that black and yellow machine. I was able to stand on the infield turn 4 corner at the 2009 Indy Mile when "the King" took a TZ750 for a few laps. No warm ups, or slow practice laps...he just poured it on. Hate the potential thread derailment but I think Squirely can agree that we all need to brush up on our moto history and re-live fairy tale moments explained in this vid:
Kenny Roberts and the Indy Mile (2009)

Good luck on your progress Jens. Anxiously awaiting.

Absolutely mind blowing how talented KR was and still is. And the sound of that TZ, it gives me the shivers.

Thanks for posting the video.
