SR500 RACE BIKE - Tracy body kit - Survivor - Ohio

Yo! First post here in a few years. I'm going to try and update this thread as I wrench on this bike and get it going.

I bought this sr500 sight unseen on Ebay. It appears to be an old race bike, or in the process of becoming one. Unfortunately, the previous owner didn't know much of the history. Just that an ex-racer was putting it together before he sold it.

This is my first sr500 and I'm excited to get this old bag running! She has some go fast bits on, a GSXR front end and wheels, Tracy body kit, a steering stabilizer, quick pull throttle, oil cooler, Mikuni carb, big brakes, swing arm, etc.

I hope that you dudes can install some knowledge about the platform and this bike in particular. First thing first, I have a few questions:

WTF is this thing attached to my throttle cable? some funky accelerator pump?
Does anyone know who made the swingarm and rear sets? Curious if i ever need parts.
Mikuni vm34? i'm not positive what carb i have.

Thanks in advance!

The front end and wheels appear to be updated with something newer. :D Other than that I cant help much.

Pretty neat looking body setup on it. Get better pics and post them up so we can see what it's all about.

Need looking Starship Troopers look on that time capsule cafe racer.

That looks like a Tracy badge on the tail, so that suggests it's a Tracy body kit. Front end looks like an SRAD gixxer and that maybe where the rear wheel came from as well. That's a really long steering damper on it. Don't know what that valve is in the other picture. Looks like it might be some sort of pressure release valve or fuel tap arrangement, but need to see what's connected to it to determine what it is.

Yep! its certainly a Tracy body kit. Ugly as all hell but boy, if I don't love it!

Yeah Teazer, that's what i was thinking, some sort of fuel tap/accelerator pump/fuel release type thingy. maybe something for an alternative fuel tank? I'm really not sure and can't find anywhere that it would mount.

Rear wheel is definitely not SRAD. I have one sitting in my gargage. 6 in wheel. Front end looks older than Srad too, but hard to tell. Wheels look more GS to me.

there will be a year stamp on one of the spokes, that should help narrow it down.

Right. The brakes and disks are interesting in that they have nicely machined adapters. Agree that wheels do look like GS500 and they would be narrower and more suitable.

They should have the width and year of manufacture cast into the spokes. that should tell us something. If the footpeg brackets and caliper adapters were machined by a PO, that was a fancy build for the time.

It appears to be a diaphragm type valve and maybe a fuel valve that shuts off flow if the throttle is closed.

Do you see a regular fuel tap (petcock) under the tank and is it possible that that this thing sat in the fuel line between the tank and the carb?

I did a quick google search and an 89-96 GS500 appears to have been supplied with that 3.5" wheel at the back end and an MT17 3.00 at the front with single disk that could be converted to twin disks.

Digging back through the cobwebs of my mind, the "mystery device" may well be an aftermarket accelerator pump that was offered by a couple of companies back in the early '80's to get rid of the flat spot in acceleration when the throttle was suddenly whacked open on a carbureted bike.
I think one of the big motorcycle magazines even did an install and test on one, using a Honda 750 / 4.
It should have an inlet and outlet for the fuel and is basically a modified automotive accelerator pump - looks a lot like the one on the 850 Quadrajet bolted to my Cadillac 500...
There was some adjustability with the pump kits - different arm position, maybe different orifices, stuff like that - to tailor the size of the shot of fuel the pump sent.
If I can find anything about the accelerator pump kits in my stack of old magazines, I'll post something on the site.

Thanks Paco, Irk, Teazer and 1fasgsxr!! I'm glad to know the wheels are from a gs500 and i'm officially CONVINCED that the mystery valve is an accelerator pump.

On to the next big bit... getting it running.
My question to the forum is; What are the least amount of wires needed to start an sr500?
I'd like to fire this heap to make sure the motor is sound. It has coils attached and a plug and wire but thats about it. No key, no headlight loom. I have a feeling that i can run a hot lead to a coil and she may fire up. any suggestions or links to a wiring diagram?
