Hi guys. Starting my first Caferacer project (Suzuki gs1000) loads of work to do, but the engine runs!

Have to take it all appart to clean, to paint, ... You'll see. Been active with smaller mini 4 stroke projects like Dax and monkey (CT70, ...)

Picture of my minibike, started like this:

and ended like this (took me 8 months):

Anyhow, this is a big bike forum!

here's the Suzuki 1000 gs:

Was a bargain at 260$! Progress will be posted.

Started stripping today. Removed wiring harness, calipers, ... the bunch.

I need some advice for the next step. Should i remove the engine first, or the wheels and frontvork and rear .. first ?

Thanks

I pull the engine with the wheels on and bike on the centerstand. Then take the rest of the items off the frame.
Later, when it's time to re-install the engine, I lay it on its side and lower the bare frame down onto it. Drop the bolts it and tighten the nuts, then set the whole she-bang upright.

Hey

Trying to get the engine running. But i've got a question, the nipple between the carbs, it's loose and connected to nothing.

To what should this be connected and what is it for?

As soon as i get the engine running, i'll take it out. Then what should I do ?

Mounting the back seat etc first ? Or first getting everything appart for blasting?

Thanks!

Wannes

Depends on how you want to mount the seat. If you're going to be cutting or welding a rear loop then you'll want to work on the seat first so you can get the loop blasted as well. Also consider leaving the handlebars and footpegs in place until you get the seat figured out. That way you know how it feels to be on your bike once you start making mods to the seat.

Those are carb vents/overflow and they are usually attached to a hose they route up under the tank, doesn't go to anything specifically. I basically have the same carbs on my 750 and they have the vents/overflow on them as well.

Look forward to seeing the bike come to life! Gotta love the Zook.

One of the great motorcycle engines of all time IMO, This was the basis of the Suzuki fours. Low pressure motor will always bring you home, like a sm block Chev. I'm also digging on those snowflake mags sweet, I'd find a matching pattern front in 18" diameter for better tires.

Thanks for the reactions.

So the cilinders in the carbs (sorry, don't know the word in english, i'm Dutch!) move up and down cause of the air flow then?

Cause in my smaller bike my cilinder in the carb is directly connected to my gas throttle (and cable).

Got some work to do tomorrow!

The vacuum diaphram on the top pulls up on the slides (cylinders). There is a port on the "outside" of the throttle plates. As the throttle plates are opened, that port is exposed to the engine vacuum and the diaphrams are pulled against a spring to lift the slides.

I hope this translator works...

The carb slides are operated by vacuum/pressure differentials acting on a diaphragm on the top of the slides to open them further as engine RPM increases. They are not the throttle, rather the throttle is a butterfly between the carb slides and the intake port.

Ok so i tried to get the engine running today.

Didn't really go at first. Then I noticed the sparkplug heads were not in the right order.

Once that was ok, it ran... shortly. It only ran on the starterpilot i injected right into the carbs.

It ran for a couple op seconds, but only on the starter pilot.

Fuel is ON, I use choke, ... But it still doesn't want to run on the fuel. I got spark on every head, and the sparkplugs get wet (of starterpilot/fuel I guess)

What should you guys advise to do ? Really want to get the engine running before I take it out.

Many thanks!
Wannes

There is a "prime" position on the fuel petcock. That will allow the carbs to fill with fuel. In the normal "on" or "reserve" positions, there is a vacuum operated fuel shutoff so that fuel won't flow if the engine isn't running. It could be there is just no fuel in your carbs.

So do i need to put it on On position or Prime?

Thanks

hook up airbox, then try. these carbs/motors are very finicky without the airbox
