The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- New Electrical

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

The all balls kit comes with two spacers (different heights) two dust seals, races and bearings. One of those spacers may or may not need to be used (I needed the smaller one). You stack your old set up (race, seals and cups) and then figure out how to get within 1mm of that height with the spacers they provide.

I was dripping a little oil and I wanted to change out the oil today since I had ran the bike (after sitting for who knows how long before I rebuilt it) for a pretty decent time no. I made a new clutch cover gasket, which was pretty cool, and then dropped the oil pan. It was pretty dirty and then I wiped my finger on the bottom only to pull out this:

Yup... pieces of rings. Im so disappointed. The funny thing is that it doesn't seem to have any symptoms of a bad ring. It's not consuming excess oil, now weird smoke, the bike excellerates hard. I did break a ring when I was putting the rings on originally and it's possible that a piece fell in but I think it's more likely that a bottom ring broke and fell in to the pan.

I'm in a bit of a pickle too because the pistons are 555cc (I bought a big bore kit) and I can't find a ring set for just one piston. Can you have pistons machined on a one off basis?

I am going to, when I have time, take the head off and see if there is any other damage done. Such a bummer.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

I can't see how a compression ring can break and make it's way past the oil ring into the sump without some serious carnage....

I'd say it's either part of the broken ring you mentioned earlier or something else (circlip, bearing retainer??)

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Right?! I've been riding it every day. Rode it this morning for 30 min HARD and nothing happened. Temps are within range, it starts right up, idles strong. I still have to pull the head to make sure but...

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Do a compression test first, then shine a torch down the plug holes to see if there's any visible damage. No need to take off the head for (possibly) nothing.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

It's a brand new set o pistons and rings and the bores were recently cut too so I know there is no reason for the ring to expand and break... I cant think of what would cause it to break and let's say it did break, it would have to be the bottom ring in order for it to even remotely end up in the bottom of the pan...

I'll test it. You can hear the compression when you kick it over. I't loud. I had the kill switch on this morning when I went to start it and didnt realize and the compression was clear as day.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

I agree with a compression/leakdown testing, you might find the culprit that way too. Hopefully it's just part of the old one that broke! :'(

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

The pic is of broken top ring, it's the only one with chrome face.
It's probably from cyl 2 or 3 and was done while putting things together?
Compression wouldn't be down much, (the extra ring land volume)
Only way to be sure is pull top end, luckily it can be done without removing motor and only takes couple of hours.
I doubt there will be any cylinder damage as there shouldn't be any pressure to gouge cylinder
Kinda sucks but has to be done

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

PJ - After sleeping on it, I think you're right. It just baffles me how it would have gotten down there.

Why do you say cyl 2/3 in particular?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Because 1-4 are easier to fit
You did the 'inside' first?

The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

I honestly don't remember. I fit them quite a long time ago and then the engine sat, assembled, for a while.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

PJ, I love your ridiculous knowledge I learn so much things I would never have known! :D I wish my brain could hold as much info as yours! :'( Sxecafe, I hope it works out in the end for you man.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Thanks, man. Me too.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

From the way it has been running, my bet is those are the old ring bits you missed, lets all hope.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

I don't think so, the edge will be highly polished if it was running and matte grey if it's from a new ring
Did you have one piece or three piece oil rings? (although if it was an oil ring it would smoke like crazy)

The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

That looks like a top ring.
I'm unsure though how it could get past the middle ring and the oil rings.

Any thoughts on this?

The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Only that I completely agree. I have no idea how that could have happened.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

You said you broke a ring originally - a betting man would say that is where the bits came from as opposed to them making their way past another 2 rings and a piston skirt.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

Wow what a thread! Read the whole thing over two days. Congrats on an excellent adventure. Bummer about the ring bits and I hope it turns out to be nothing. Never built a four cylinder but can imagine how difficult it would be getting all four pistons into the bores safely. A twin is bad enough.

Good luck with it
John

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- GOT THE TITLE BUDDY!!!!

I'll never forget re-ringing my brothers KZ1300.

Much fun was had getting 6 pistons back into their respective cylinders......
