The SkyTeam 'Ace' Resource

Hey Crazy,

Just looking through some of the photos of your bike. I noticed your left bar has controls for indicators, horn and hi/low beams, and the right has the kill switch. Where are the headlamp controls? I ask because I'm planning to un-clutter my bars as much as possible and if i can relocate some of those switches somewhere else, it would be awesome!

Cheers,
Son

The top switch on the left has three positions: high/off/low:

But I have a neater set-up to use when I do a fairly major overhaul of the electrics.

Crazy

My ace spark is quite weak. Cant find whats the issue. What i have done is changed ignition coil(Yamaha LC135), CDI(from ooracing), iridium spark plug.

I have trouble using E-start in the morning. But after riding constantly for 15 mins, if my engine stalls i can use E-start.

I have consulted some mechanic, some says stator coil is bad. some says rectifier is bad, some say starter motor is bad and some says battery problem.

Anyone have this problems?

Hi all, a few questions and a few other things that may be of interest.

Firstly, a question to Alan Vega...What headlamp did you get and where? I would love to get a yellow tinted lamp that is slightly larger than the original and then I stumbled across your pictures!

Secondly, just wondering about the legality of removing the air box. I know some of you on this forum have done it and it just seems to tidy up the bike a whole heap.

Lastly, I have been in contact with Suus customs through "http://www.caferaceraustralia.com.au/" about a bike mod that they put on their own Ace 125. A bracket that would allow you to mount a separately bought front guard to the rear wheel and get rid of that rather large stock guard. I have already removed mine and it is not technically road legal to ride around as is (pictures below). This mod would make the bike road legal once more. Suus have informed me that they can make one for me, I just thought I would pass on the info in case anyone else wanted to do the same thing.

Hey Son,

ADR has changed recently (but differs per state). You are no longer required a rear fender covering the whole wheel(half a wheel length) but they still recommend having one. As per your picture, that would be legal as you still kept the plastic panel protecting your airbox from being sprayed by the wheel.

Hey xristianos,

Thanks for the reply. I had a quick look and this is what I found concerning the rear mudguard in the ADR, section 42.:

42.12.3. Wheel Guards for L-Group Vehicles

42.12.3.1. General Requirements

The wheels of a vehicle and the wheel of a side-car must be fitted with wheel guards of width not less than the ‘Section Width’ of the tyre. The wheel guards must be so designed as to protect other road users, as far as practicable, against thrown-up stones, mud, ice, snow and water and to reduce for those users the dangers due to contact with the moving wheels.

42.12.3.2. Special Requirements

42.12.3.2.1. Rear ‘Axle’ and Side-car

The wheel guard provided for the rear wheel and for the wheel of any side-car must extend not less than from a point vertically above the foremost part of the wheel rearward to a point not higher than the intersection of the arc of the wheel guard with a line through the centre of the wheel at 45 degrees to a horizontal plane through the centre of the wheel when a mass of 45 kg is distributed in the saddle of the vehicle at its ‘Unladen Mass’.

Not sure if mu numberplate counts, but you might be on to something, it does pretty much give 45 degrees of coverage from horizontal!~

Also this:

42.12.1.2.1.2. the rear of the wheel guards must not terminate above a horizontal plane 150 mm above the axis of rotation of the wheels (as measured at the wheel centres) and furthermore the intersection of the edge of the wheel guard with this plane (point A, Figure 1) must lie outside the median longitudinal plane of the tyre;

I measured and there I think lies the issue. TECHNICALLY, a guard should be in place no more than 15cm above my wheel and the distance between my seat and the wheel is to great...HOWEVER, the numberplate does go back into the 15cm margin, so really, I'm only dirtying the underside of my seat, not the vehicles behind me, and who gives a crap about that! I suppose I'll ride it for a while and see if any cops give me the "no go".

If the ADR has been updated and I found an outdated one please let me know. I'm afraid my searching has turned up nothing more recent :(

Thanks for letting me know though, I think i will have second thoughts before putting a guard on the rear as although the solution I posted in my opinion looks better than stock...no rear guard looks even better :p

You might have guessed from all the posts, I have a free day today, but thought I'd put down one more.

Just finished putting on my exhaust wrap!

Hey Son,

Here you go. Attached is the updated ADR. Be aware this is for SA and not sure about the others states interpretation. It has further clarifications on what it means.

Only requirement now is as per the actual explanation:

There is no specific requirement for a minimum wheel guard length. This means that a wheel guard of an appropriate width to cover the tyre tread must be present, and designed to offer characteristics that will provide some protection to other road users

The ADR is a federal update though and interpretations should be similar...

https://www.sa.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0005/127841/MR1540-Motorcycle-muguards-and-tail-tidies-VS-Fact-sheet-oct14.pdf

So yes, You don't really need it anymore to be legal ;)

This section introduces an element of doubt:

"If a motorcycle was built to meet the previous version of the ADR we recommend that you
do not remove any part of the original wheel guards.

However, if a motorcycle was built with a tail extension so that it met the requirements of the
previous version of ADR 42/04, you may wish to remove the extension and fit a tail tidy, ……"

Yes, the salient point in that sentence is 'recommend'. It is no longer compulsory.

Same as 'recommended' tyre widths used in motorcycles and cars. ADR recommends use of standard tyre width/dimensions as per OEM but you are not required to.

Other thing to watch in that update is the position of the number plate. According to that update, it now has to sit at least 45 degrees. Prior, the only actual requirement for motorcycle number plates in SA was that it has to be installed so it can be read from left to right with no minimum angle requirements ad at least 300mm off the ground

The rest of the requirements is standard and unchanged (ie. distance of indicators, red rear reflector, etc)

Best to verify with your state transport authority as it may differ. :)

Thanks a heap for posting all the new regulation details, as you said I think it's wise to check my state laws, but for all intensive purpose, it seems they've finally done away with the rear guard rule nationally which is fantastic!

Now that that's been resolved, back to an earlier question. I know at least one of you guys has ditched the air box and shoved some pods on. I would love to do the same but I'm guessing its still not allowed and no reforms on that have come along recently.

Please correct me if I'm wrong here, Id love to be wrong! but until someone does, its an air box for me.

Hey RobNZ,

Can't actually remember where exactly I got them but pretty sure I bought them from here: (links are different, pegs have slightly different trimming)

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Pair-Black-Motorcycle-Foot-Rests-Custom-Universal-CHROME-Bracket-Spring-High-quality-Foot-pegs/1319262919.html

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Universal-Free-Shipping-New-Brand-Man-Street-Motorcycle-Foot-Rest-Pedal-Peg-with-Spring/939757322.html

I like that they match the shocks, and they're great for regular riding, just wouldn't do any wheelies on them! not that I've tried.

Anyone know what the stock tank paint is? Considering moulding a new fibreglass seat that has closer contours to the tank (slightly more square) and doing some research before I throw money at something I can't finish properly

Suus Customs have done it with their ace, they had a spare tank to butcher and recycle, but I'm thinking of taking a mould from my tank and doing something with that since it would be more in my price range.

Tad just posted in his full fairing thread that he had the paint colour matched for his fairing and the colour he used was Kawasaki
Grey Ninja ZX12R
Code KAW 7E

check out his thread to see the colour on the fairing

been looking for an hour...any Australians know where to grab that motorcycle paint?

found this site: http://www.rsbikepaint.com/en-us/shop-paints.php?colourscheme=7394&11187=on

but it does not ship to Australia. Even if I ship to America and then Aus, customs probably won't let me have an darn aerosol can. Would one grab a pint of the stuff in that case and then someone with a spray gun?

check any good auto paint store, alot of places can tint spray cans for you, take in the side cover and they should be able to colour match it to their paint codes. im not sure but i think super cheap might even do tintable spray cans. but im not sure
