The Whack Shack (formerly known as The Aviary)

Re: The Aviary?

Progress has halted for the moment. This past weekend, and this coming weekend saw/will see no work due to spending time with my older son before he deploys.
The shop did see some action last Saturday night though. I told my son he could use it for the "afterparty" with his friends (the regular party was earlier that evening with family).
Makeshift lighting, benches, and a beerpong table later...

I told him I took the panoramic for a "before pic", and that if any of his friends broke anything... they'd get buried under it.

Why is there a hole in the wall with an extension cord stuffed into it ?

Re: The Aviary?

Yea, I know. I've been slacking. Life, waitin on help, the weather, and a little bit of "lazy" got me held up. Made some progress Sun/Mon/Tues though.
I hade to demo out the plywood that we skinned the roof with, as it had been in the weather for about a month and had warped up beyond use. This was going to be the anchor for the tin panels when they didn't fall exactly on a rafter. So, to replace that "random" anchor point, I simply installed stringers between each rafter. Twelve stringers to a row... four rows each side... for a total of 96 freakin 22.5" long 2x4's! Thankfully, I have my brothers chop saw :) Getting the stringers in was the time consuming part. After that, the tin went down pretty quickly. This is not exactly the roof I wanted, but if I keep waiting for my brother, the shop will never get finished.
Here's a shot of the stringers and the front side done.

Here's the back after demo.

And here's the tin going up.

I wasn't real happy with how the ridge cap went down, and apparently for good reason. It's pouring raining today (which is why I wanted this done early in the week) and I have two leaks, both in the ridge. I think it's blowing under the cap in those spots. I'm going to see if I can cure it with some roofing cement first, as I'd really prefer not to have to pull the ridge cap. But if that's what it takes ::)
I plan to get the door fab'd and framed up this weekend as well. We'll see how well that goes :)

Oh, and the obligatory pic of my Supervisor, still doing what he does best...

Re: The Aviary?

its looking great! though i dont really care i just keep following your threads to see the next avatar! this one is the best thus far!

Re: The Aviary?

I donno if you can get it for that tin, I've been on enough roofs to see a few things. There is a rubber foam gasket like thing that will go in between the panels and the cap that will keep out the weather.

Looks good otherwise I need to get to funding my storage shed so I can clean out may garage.

Re: The Aviary?

Sorry, not a lot to show. I got to work on it a little the last two weekends, but there's so much other shit going on right now. If the weather holds up next weekend, I'll be pulling the roof back apart and doing it right. I tried to rush it, and stay cheap (since I'm over budget) and it kinda bit me in the ass. I got the ridgecap sealed up from the leaking issue it had, but everytime I looked at it I kept thinking "I'm gonna get everything moved in and it'll start leaking again". So I decided to save up some scratch and re do it properly.

Re: The Aviary?

They do make the foam insert for that shape metal man, no need to rip it off. Lowes even sells it. The ridge cap needs to overhang 6" or so on either side. The water runs up the roof and into the ridge otherwise. Ask me how I know. Looks good to me man. Nice and sturdy.

That's part of the problem. And I'll bet you know the same way I now know :D

Re: The Aviary?

Ah, you got jokes :p

I made some progress last weekend. Even took some pics. Just haven't been able to post them up.
My knees are sore from crawling around the roof all weekend. I imagine this is what Scott must feel like all the time. You know... being a "Head Chef" and all :p :D
