Tim's SR500

Re: Tim's SR500 - Oct 14 2011 - tank updates - almost 1 year into the build ;)

I gotta get some H or V rated tires for my XS650's run at Bonneville in 2012 ;)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Oct 14 2011 - tank updates - almost 1 year into the build ;)

Here are a couple pics of the wheels. Rear has the spacers, sprocket and 320mm FZR rotor on it, the front is just wearing the rotor. It may need a spacer to bring the rotor out from the spokes a bit - will have to see once it's in the forks.

Just getting things sorted to bolt them together and assemble the rolling chassis :)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Nov 2011 - wheel pics

I too will be running the Fizzer brakes on my build. Very nice, sir.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Sloooooowly getting there. Managed to put some stuff together and make it more or less a rolling chassis today. Still need some spacers for the wheels and stuff but it's getting there!

I really like it :)

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

That tank is very cool. Deceiving too, at first look from the side it doesn't look like both the front and back are tapered. Very nice profile from the top. Love the tires too!

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

yeah, I really like the tank. took a bit of work to make it fit - had to widen the tunnel up by the neck, but aside from that it popped right on. The tabs back at the seat end were originally vertical so we just bent them flat and welded on a plate to bolt them to.

Not planning on painting it - going to leave it as-is. Maybe throw some cheap spray-clear on the front where we cut it to prevent it from rusting. The frame is likely going to be blasted and clear-powder coated.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

The BS tank looks great!
Coolio build. Lookin' like a TT bike from the olden days of dirt track. We'll have to "lean 'er over together" when I get the baby tracker finished.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Just need to nail down the rear shocks. I was hoping to use my HAGONs from the XS, which is getting new shocks for the Speed Trials, but they're a solid inch too short. Need 13-14 inchers it looks like. Might do the old Redwing Hammer Heads for fun but spending $200 on shocks for 'fun' seems silly.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Popped the engine in and bolted on a few more bits. Tank will have to sit an inch higher than planned to clear the engine, but no big deal. New dual-feed oil line on the engine, exhaust on etc. Not final bolt-ons but mocking it up.

In theory I'm going to break it down to blast and clearcoat the frame but I'm thinking more and more I might just slap the thing together and ride it.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

that would be the thing to do Tim, function over form. Ride now, polish later.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

At first didn't like the tank, but looking at it from different angels I like. Not feeling the bars though, need more pullback.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

I grok the comment re: the bars. Dig the tank big time.
If you want to try a few different sets of bars and you're going to be up my way, you can borrow some of my used dirt track bars from my stash to trial fit - wow, talk about authenticity- chips and dings from the track, scratches that tell a story, etc etc etc .
I've pretty much picked out the ones I'm using on the baby tracker so whatever you like from the "bar stash" (geez I remember when that meant something else LOL!) we can figure out something.
Also agree with the comment "git 'er running", leave it a little crusty idea. Planning on doing it myself with one of my projects.
Not to rob this thread, but if you're planning on running PS or APS at Bonneville, drop me a line. I build a Peel Mountain Fairing that would be the bee's knees and as far as seats for your record attempt. no problemo for a dynomite combo.
Neat bike.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

I like the bars :p Norman Hyde M bars. Very comfy. Tired of uncomfortable bikes - I'm getting old.

Need to get back out there and keep progress going. It needs some wheel spacer work and of course tons of other stuff to make it work.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

mmm, I'm really digging the tank and bars. I think I'm going to do something like this someday. Those Shinko tires are sweet too

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Bit of an update :)

The SR500 is getting an inverted front end with dual 6 pot calipers and the FZR rotors currently on the front and rear of the bike in the pics. Will sort a smaller rotor for the rear.

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Only if you brake really hard all the time. Doesn't matter how many disk are on the front. What matters are the forces transmitted to the frame. That logic is a little unusual. You could argue that one disk is as much as any of the chassis could handle and I'd probably agree and there's only so much braking force can be applied to those tires. It would also probably look better with one 320mm disk versus 2 slightly smaller ones, and one large disk will be quite enough to lock the wheel I suspect.

Tim,
That should look Supermotard like with modern front end. It may look better with a single disk though !

Re: Tim's SR500 - Roller!

Suggestions noted - it's not a 100% thing - just going to end up with 2 inverted front ends, so either one will go on the SR or be sold off.
