Also just learned about annealing copper. There are a number of copper washers on the XS engine forming seals where studs go through the engine cases etc. on the underside. I noticed a small oil drip after running the bike at one of these studs.
I didn't anneal the copper washers in advance. As it happens, when you work copper (i.e. stamp it into washers etc.) it hardens a lot. To soften it back up, you need to heat it red-hot and then you can quench it in water or let cool. This realigns the molecular structure and restores the softness.
Likely the heating of the engine will do some of this, and re-torquing the nuts will seal things up. But if not I have more copper washers I can anneal and replace one at a time. Things you learn.
