Tim's XS project - 750cc rephased ported head titanium valve hot cam craziness

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Gottta find somewhere to dyno it first. Not many places will dyno aircooled bikes. I also want a place with a sniffer on the dyno for carb tuning.

Cyclewerx got one in recently but not sure if tom has set it up yet.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

If and when you find somewhere let me know, the only bike dyno in Ottawa seems to be for modern bikes and they "tune" everything through the bikes computer.

These liquid cooled transverse fours will never catch on..

I think these guys are out near you. I emailed with Len only to realize they were way out that way.

This was his reply to me:

Ah the XS 650!... One of my favourites ......Built a few of these engines myself over the years. It amazes me how popular and competitive they are in hill climbing! We have a 4 foot diameter fan for lot’s of air movement and an assortment of other smaller fans that can be strategically placed.

Cheers,

Maximum Cycle in London, ON has a smaller dyno. You can run anything on that and they usually bring it out to bike events and racing events.

Cycle Improvements in Waterloo has a dyno facility. More modern than above, but should be good for A/C bikes
http://www.cycleimprovements.com/

And there is also a place in Brantford. Can't remember the name, but they can do A/C bikes too

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Yeah... everywhere 2 hours from me :) But would be worth the trip potentially. Once I get the engine broken in after a couple hundred miles I'll find a place. Thanks for the tips!

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Watching that vid really makes me want to build an XS cafe with a giant motor now. Thanks Tim. Haha.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

No prob! Going out for a country ride now.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Rip'er down to London and you can hit the track after the dyno. Hp/tqe and 1/4 mile times all in one day.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

ah thats who I was talking about. Looked on their site and only saw new bikes and assumed that was their thing. It's an easy hour ride from my house, Ill have to go see em.

Would be interesting to see what I'm putting out with stock carbs and what gains if any I get with the VMs I've got coming.

Tim, give these guys a call. http://www.z1cycletech.com/

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Yeah - forgot about Z1. Will definitely call them up and avail myself of their tuning magic. Just need another 100+ miles on the bike before I hand it over for some redline hunting.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

I'm stoked that the bike is alive and running! I can't wait to see what kind of numbers the motor is putting out. Remember, this thing should be good to 10k rpm!

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Ryan - you and me both man! Not sure I'll have the guts to take it up that high. How does one determine redline anyhow, without blowing something up?

Wonder what the theoretical speed is - have to check gear ratios and see what I would potentially be doing at say 8000 RPM in 5th.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

BTW - don't kickstart a rephased big bore hot cam XS650 in Converse sneakers. Ouch. Seriously considering putting the electric starter back on this thing. I can get a nice small Shorai battery with 210 cca (more than original) that is the exact same size as the one I have under the seat now. Would just need to find a place for the solenoid (is there a modern smaller relay that can handle the load?) and button.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Do not laugh...Haha! Take a look at a riding lawn mower solenoid Brother, they have a little bracket already on the back with two holes for flush mounting and two posts so you just hook the positive battery cable to one side and the starter cable to the other then there is just one small post for hooking a start button wire to, they are great for race bikes and are only a few dollars if you do not mind a mower part on your bike!

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

I'm pretty sure I can find a spot for the solenoid under the seat along with a push-button. Just not sure I really want to :) Means a new battery (just bought the Shorai lithium - the one with enough cca and same physical size as mine is $150) and also running a lead from the solenoid to the starter motor. I think it's just the one lead I need to run - the starter motor would ground with the engine, and the ground on the solenoid just runs to the frame or battery?

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Yeah man that is all you need with that style solenoid, just one positive battery cable from the battery to the solenoid and then one from the other side of the solenoid to the starter, the solenoid and starter would both be self grounded to the engine and frame. The only other thing you would need is one wire from your start button that is hot when you push it to the small post on the solenoid, you can even just run a small wire from the battery or hot side of the solenoid from the battery to the small post on the solenoid with a push button in between for starting.

2 priming kicks to get stuff sorted, ignition on and 2 kicks under choke. Fired right up. Now for some timing and tuning and for some fun!

Is that you Tim? Man that bike is a beaut!! What kind of tank is that?

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

Nope - stunt double. He weighs about 15 pounds more than I do ;)

Tank is a replica of a Norton Manx tank, hand formed from aluminium. Much better pics etc. of it earlier in this stupid long build thread.

I finished the bike 2 years ago, but have always wanted it to have an engine it deserved as a cafe racer. So this winter I decided to go all-in and build a proper race motor for it. Surprisingly it is still very well behaved around town, but when you open it up it's a beast. Up to 90 miles on it now so I'll be able to put it on a dyno in the next couple of weeks. Pulled the plugs today and they're perfectly tan, so I don't expect to be doing any major adjustments. Just maybe some needle height changes, or perhaps a larger main jet as I really haven't had it up to speed. 60-70 mph at ~3250 RPM is about as much as I've done.

Re: Tim's XS project - ENGINE UPGRADES COMING :D - AUG 2012 SALT FLATS OR BUST

60-70mph? I thought you guys used the metric system up there! Your bike should be geared to do 150mph @ 8000rpm, it sounds like. It depends on where you run out of HP fighting the atmosphere. My stock displacement 85HP SV650 would do 149 with standard race mods and full race fairings.

I know what you mean about kick-starting these things. It's barely an option with my 725cc "twingle" XS.....even with compression releases! I just bought my third starter motor.

By the way, I did shave a little off your head. .020"(.5mm) I think. So your compression should be a bit higher than stock. I saw a slick build where someone welded the XS combustion chambers into a bathtub shape, and used flat top pistons like an old VW engine. I'm obsessed with this idea!
