To seal gaskets or not to? Loc tite?

There is a substitute for HondaBond, but I forget what it is. :-\
I hear ya on the long trip to the dealer. I call my HondaYamaZukiSaki dealer when I need something, and they ship it to me. So happens one of the guys who works in the parts department drives past my shop on his way to work, so he drops things off. It's sweet!

Anti-seize is mandatory for stainless fasteners.

Threebond 1184? That's what I've been using and having positive results. No issues... Funny thing about the fasteners is if you buy the "kits" from alloyboltz they actually tell you TO use loctite.

Loctite:

When I was younger, I used to worry about all the screws and bolts coming loose.

Now that I am older and more experienced, I worry that the screw and bolts won't come loose.

Every bolt and nut on my CB360 has never sieze except the head bolts, and only because the head bolts haven't been off yet.

Been riding....Nothing has loosened or fell off.

Proper torque is better than loctite. Especially when you are removing the screws/bolts later.

I am not against loctite in general...it has a use, but not on my motorcycles. Not needed.

I am in that same school of thought. It's not friction that keeps a fastener tight, it's tension. That's why an overtightened fastener can be a chronic problem with coming loose. It's like a spring that has been overstretched, and can no longer maintain tension through thermal expansion cycles. Anti-seize reduces friction when installing a fastener, so it does make it easy to overtighten, but if you are aware of that and adjust your torque accordingly, it give you a much more consistent tension on your fasteners. Anti-seize reduces the torque required to install a fastener as much as 20%.

There are exceptions to my anti-seize rule. Stator screws get red Loctite as does the compensator nut on a Haley, (as per the service manual.) Brake rotor screws get blue Loctite.

For Loctite to work properly, threads must be scrupulously clean. I chase internal threads with a tap, then clean with a spray of carb cleaner or brake cleaner. External threads get cleaned on a wire wheel, then sprayed.

Just like with anti-seize, Loctite does provide some degree of lubrication during installation. It also can prevent galling or cold welding of stainless fasteners, but not as effectively as anti-seize.
