Haha ;D

The more people on 2 wheels the better for all. I don't care how you dress, what music you listen too, what bike you ride, whether you wrench on it yourself or not. The more 2 wheeled vehicles on the road the better.

If the cool thing to do for the 20-somethings (and perhaps 30-somethings) is to find, fix and ride old motorcycles and mopeds, then huzzah, we've won.

I found it amusing. And unless I'm in mid-town by the university campuses, I don't see that trend around Memphis.

Let's see... I have 3 cruiser bicycles (and 2 old Schwinn Suburban 10 speeds) but none are motorized. I can't see putting an engine on a 1937 Henderson skip tooth or a 1958 Firestone. Or my Wal-mart cheapy. Although... we did find an air cooled side valve shaft drive boxer twin engine in the creek bed a couple weeks ago... all iron...

Have 2 project CLs, no CBs (unless you count the CB radios, in which case I have several, including a base station with 60' antenna).

Skinny jeans don't look right with jack boots... or logging boots. Plus I'm firmly stuck in the 70s style wise, longish hair, full beard, black t-shirt and flannel or black leather jacket.

All the 2 strokes here say Stihl or Husqvarna on them. Well, there IS an ancient red Johnson outboard in the barn, but it doesn't run so it doesn't count...

I think Tim is bang on. I grew up in a household of motorcycles, but I'm thrilled that bikes are picking up in popularity. Not only does it give me more people to ride with, but it also pushes the boundaries of the custom scene. Sure it's becoming more difficult to find good deals on craigslist, but that is the nature of the internet. Go talk to your neighbours, go to swap meets, talk to people. There will always be deals and relationships to be had.

It also bothers me that the common lexicon has been so reduced to calling someone that is different that you a "hipster." Not just in this thread, it is very prevalent on this site. Take a step back and listen to how whiney you sound when complaining about the clothing, music, and lifestyle choices of someone that isn't you especially coming from grown men. I know a lot of people here consider themselves to be different than most (even though you're likely not), but then why do you turn around and show intolerance to other peoples lifestyles? You do you, and mind your own business.

Just us cranky old men wondering what's going on with the kids today ;)

I'll be home soon. :) Just waiting for the kids to grow up, as I live in a city with a private endowment that'll pay for my kids' college tuition.

It is all part of de-evolution. The aesthetics in western society was once much more form following function. A cowboy's attire evolved by necessity, as did the industrial worker's, the motorcycle racer's, the soldier's, the construction worker's, the policeman's etc.. The daily work they did to eat and keep a roof over their head dictated their appearance.

My father worked at a paper-mill and he worked construction and he owned a small shop that sold the British motorcycles which he raced on weekends if he was lucky. He grew up on a farm and so he too had a tractor and used to plant fields of buckwheat etc. when he could, and we had chickens and ducks which we ate and made things from. He drove a 1940 Ford coupe along with a lot of other flat-head fords, and he had a 1950 Olds 88, because those are the automobiles that a young man who worked with his hands could afford in the late 50s and early 60s.
He may have had to wear safety glasses with side-shields at the paper mill to protect his eyes, he may have worn a leather jacket when he raced and rode motorcycles to protect his skin, he may have worn a Carhartt jacket and work-boots while working construction to protect him from the cold and work hazards, he may have worn a straw hat when plowing fields with the tractor in the summer sun. AND he may have worn some of these clothes at the end of the day or during leisure time, but not because he had some misguided need to look like something he was not, he WAS those things, and so was most everybody else of his generation.

Now look around today. For some reason there are many thousands of people walking around copping the look of the blue-collar working class of the mid-20th century. It is not because they are working in a hazardous shop, on a construction site, racing motorcycles in the 50s, farming, a WWII vet, and it is not because an automobile from the 1940s or 50s is what is most affordable.
In the 50s and 60s there were not hoards of youngsters walking around everywhere dressed up as flappers driving around in cars and on motorcycles circa 1915.

So instead of form evolving out of function, from something in the real world, it comes from the mind, the ego. And it is a lie. That person walking around in costume, is a liar and a thief. They stole their look and are walking around no more legitimate than anyone at a costume party that says they are Napoleon.

Now because I grew up with them, I am into the old Brit bikes. I have some heirlooms of my father's to take care of, some old Matchless bikes and stuff, I got some old Nortons from old friends who bought them new who wanted me to take care of them, just like I have my father's old 30-30 Winchester that he bought in the early 50s and sent to future generations.

I enjoy spending time with people who have similar histories and experiences with their vocation, with motorcycles and anything else from the same era, from when I was young.
I sure as shit don't want to spend time and hang out with people who are liars and thieves and pretenders who are afraid to be what they actually are so they walk around like they are in a costume party dressed up as Fonzie from Happy Days then go work in in sales or IT all day.
I don't mind spending time with anyone, but if they are in sales or work IT then please don't walk around dressed like a 1920's factory worker, a Cowboy or a 1960's greaser or motorcycle racer okay? People will like you much more if you are simply yourself, if you buy clothing for practical reasons and you work and take care of your wife and children, if you think of something all fucking day besides yourself and the way you and your transportation look.
Why dwell on the phenomena of posers and hipsters or Liars or whatever you want to call them? Because it is not healthy for people or the planet is why.
A population that hates themselves, is so insecure that they hide and run from themselves and are afraid to interact with others in the real world without lying and living as if they are in a costume party, these people are going to warp and fuck-up everything around them, they are destructive to themselves and the real world.

The most important thing for anyone to learn in life is to know which things they see exist only outside their heads and surely which things exist only inside their heads. Trying to impose what is inside your head on what is outside, will eventually destroy what is outside, and that is everything but your ego. You will destroy your body, your friends and family and the planet.

Good luck.

> It is all part of de-evolution.

You are, intentionally or no, absolutely side-splilttingly hilarious

Whoa. Look out, it's the Fashion Police! I drive a pick up tuck, but guess what? I'm not a farmer. Guess that makes me a liar and a fraud. I'm so ashamed.

I hated hipsters before it was cool to do so...

Seriously, I have no problem with anyone getting on something (anything) with two wheels. It will make you a better person. But if you buy a motorcycle simply as a fashion accessory with no interest in riding or maintaining it, I am going to give you shit, call you names until you either ride it or sell it.

69 CB350.

$&@#! I'm a hipster now. But I restored it from scratch myself!

The minute I start to worry about what someone else is wearing and their reasoning behind it, or what they are driving or riding and their reason to do so, would someone please shoot me? I figure at that point my life has gotten to be pretty pitiful and I might as well end it right then and there.

The fact is, nobody likes the kid who tries to play with your toys in the sandbox. Unfortunately few people ever get past the mental state of tue kid in that sandbox.
