Vintage Privateer Smoker (RD350 Race Bike)

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Sucks about the GT, looked like a pretty involved project for sure.

There was just a WAY to much to do to the GT, and everything is soo fucking expensive for them. I made a good amount parting it out, and the week after I ended up getting a T500 project (which is sitting in my shed, away from the RD table until its complete). I'm much happier with the T500 than the GT750 anyways so that all worked out.

looking good mate, steady progress especially with warmer weather and longer days on the way, Know the feeling of getting somewhere when the fairing gets mocked up bit late to the party but ime in look forward to your updates mate

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Got the rear of the fairing mounted now. The only part left if the front lower. I already have the mounts welded in but the fairing will need recessed in so it's flat against the support. Going going to glass until it's warmer out. This fairing has been hanging for 2 years so it's a little out of shape. Makes things a little harder to get straight. Need to get the upper fairing near the screen stiffened then the fairing will be ready to take off.

Next I need to finish mounting the electronics, decide on a gauge setup and it's mounting, figure out the rear suspension, then take it all back apart to clean it all up and powder.

Now that the fairing isn't hanging by wire, I can put the rest of the body pieces back on for a look of what is to come.

Is that an "oil cooler" dipstick?

Ha yeah, it's one of these things that I had welded and threaded to fit the RD. I have no belief that it will actually do anything, but I thought it was pretty unique and looked pretty cool sitting right behind the fairing.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Beautiful work. To my eye, the late TR's and early TZ's look so damn good. Looking forward to how you end up. I like the seat, very old school. I used to hang out with a lot of guys who had actual TD's, TR's and TZ's and vintage raced them. The lightweight and simplicity is so pure. Figured I'd show you my old RD350 based vintage racer. The seat is an early mono-shock style but I managed to graft it on cleanly and along with the 400 tank it looked fine. Fairing had lowers, but the track quickly chews those up and spits out the pieces so just the upper is what we ended up with. I think the added cooling airflow was probably a good thing too. Keep up the good work.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Got in my rear shocks today. Ended up going with Ikons. Can now finalize up the rear brace and shock mount.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Been drawing up a couple designs for the gauge mount. Not sure which I like better. I like the idea of the floating instrument lights in the second design, but I don't like how far away it makes them to clear the other brackets.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

I'm curious to see how those ikon shocks work out. I'll need some for my Daytona when I start putting that one back together.

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

What about putting them around bottom edge of gauge bracket I did something same on my project

Re: First Vintage Race Inspired Smoker

Guess I've missed a little work on here. We just got the frame finished up and the fairing mounted. Had to fiberglass up some old holes and make new as they were off some. I am not ready to take it apart, final cleanup and weld on the frame, then it's off to powder.

Tear down has started, hopefully this weekend we will get to some of the final welding/smoothing before powder

Nice work Jordan, this thing be done for Barber?

Thats the plan, we will have to see. There is still ALOT of work to do, and I bought this bike in boxes, and there are small things here and there missing that I have to source from somewhere (like motor mount bolts). I think realizing and getting ahold of those pieces might be what makes or breaks it.

End of July I hope to have it BACK from powder
All of August doing assembly and wiring
September is body work/paint, this will be a challenge. Havent decided yet if Im going to paint it myself or send it out. If I was doing one color I would do it, but with a race bike it might be to much for me.
That gives me a week into October to button things up
