XS1100 Bob concept

Well, I got home from school and went diggin in the garage. I found an old xs11 rear fender and took the cut-off wheel to it.

It's not sitting 100% where it'll end up, the front part of the fender will go up a bit once I actually mount it.

IDK, Fix ol' boy. I like it, but there is still a missing element back there. I just can't decide what it needs...

I need to mount a tail light between the fender and seat, and try to figure out what I'm doing with the license plate. Other than that, I don't know what else would go back there.

The part under the seat is going up about an inch, but the radii don't match enough to go up any farther. I could raise the angle more, but then it wouldn't match the radius of the tire.

My wife just let me know my fuel sending unit arrived so here's hoping it's in good shape. I'd love to button up the fuel system and get started tuning tonight.

I tried to bob my XS and all she wanted to do was be a racer.

You will find what works for you, and then you will love it.

Looks great (in both incarnations). If you don't mind me asking, where did you find a whitewall for the 17" rear? Thanks!

Hey,
I lucked out with my bike being a special, It has a factory 16" rear wheel. I am planning the Standard front end swap etc, but I will keep a few bit that came on the Speacial. You can interchange then with no issues.

Nice! I guess I'll keep looking. Be careful if you just change to the standard forks as that does change the trail on the bike. Unless you're changing the triple tree as well. If you're not a member of xs11.com you should check it out. There's a ton of friendly, knowledgeable folks there. Some aren't really keen on us modifying these old bikes, but so long as you can brush that off, it's well worth a visit.

Fix,
I know all about the fork conversion;) ive been on XS11 for years. Thanks though

My pleasure, never hurts to share the wealth of knowledge. No school tonight so it's "Fix vs. some mixture of the fuel and electrical system" round 2. I rejetted the carbs, buttoned it all up, and had cold pipes on 1 and 4...which points to an electrical problem. I can't tune the carbs til I can get it all firing and at least get an idle. I'll never know how I manage to break parts of my bike I'm not even touching.

What I wanted to do today : Tune my carbs and maybe get a ride in.
What I did today : Replaced the spark plugs, checked for spark, never got the bike to idle, cursed at new wet spark plugs, ran out of time.

I guess I'll pull the carbs back off on Thursday and make sure I didn't fuck anything up. I'm just at a loss. I hate not being able to fix something because I don't know what to fix.

Before you dig back into the carbs, work thru the electrical first.
Which cylinders aren't firing? Are they sharing a coil? The plastic connectors in the harness are also likely places for failure to occur.

Thanks Swagger. I decided to start over and do it all right. I'm stripping the carbs completely and going back to stock jets. I've gone and bought feeler gauges, a compression tester and micrometer. I did a cold engine compression test with no plugs in and no carbs. I got 135-150-135-135 for compression readings. Tonight, I pull the vavle cover and check clearances. I have a feeling #2 will require a new shim. Then I'll adjust the timing chain tension and check the timing.

If, after all that, and the reassembly of the carbs, I still can't fire (even though I did see spark on all 4, it might not be great spark) it's time to go with a new set of MikesXS coils. The only other possible culprit is the vacuum advance, where there are some wires that can break in the insulation due to repetitive fatigue.

I'll tell you what tho. Without the folks at xs11.com, I'd be lost. There's a lot of knowledge specific to this bike there, and friendly folks willing to share it.

Yeah they're good people there.
Vacuum advance....? Uhh....I guess I didn't know the 11 had that.
Interesting....

It's got some crazy stuff for a '78

yep the vacume advance was put on the xs11 to help fuel consumtion when on the highway....pretty cool for and old super bike huh...

We're running and gunning. Here's what she looks like without accessories.

Turned out one of my main problems was rotten plug wires. I had picked up new coils anyhow, so I just did new coils, wires and caps. After that a great guy from the xs11 boards helped me get it dialed in. Put about 1k miles on so far. I think we're good for the GTG. I do have the little fairing on it now. It's great for keeping the wind from beating me up under my helmet.

Gotta be happy with the results, Fix. It really turned out nice and clean. Glad to hear you're logging some miles too.
