XS650 -brattish

First of all, that is my all time favorite Johnny Cash photo. I have had that taped to the inside of my guitar casefor years. Second of all you have to tell me how to do that rear brake mod! That looks great!! I have a '78 sitting in the door yard waiting to be re-built and that mod looks really good.

I had a swing arm with new bronze bushings from a drum brake model kicking around (the bracket for the brake tension bar is on the bottom). I chopped the original tension (compression) bar mounting point off the caliper support, milled a flat and drilled & tapped the opposite side for the new mounting point. I welded up a small steel bracket that bolts on this face and is drilled to take the tension bar shoulder bolt. I'll see if I can take a photo of it.

its a great mod that makes a big difference in the overall look of the bike. puts the visual weight on the bottom, where it should be.

I need to learn to weld.

Love the seat. Looks great and compliments all the black very nicely. Did you use the old foam or did you get new material? what material are you using? My 360 seat is way too tall for me. I'm 5 foot 4 inches and I have to tippy toe it:(

Hey! Its been a while any more progress??!! Also, can i get a copy of that seat pan plan? I'm going to copy it on my '78. different color though. ( i love the white but not for this build in particular)

Thanks!!

Everything on the seat(including the pan) was brand new. I had the the guy who upholstered it use 2" of high density covered with an inch of softer stuff all pulled really tight.

I've made some progress over the last week and it should be on the road next week. I'll have to take a few photos and post them. I'm trying a weird mat black-green on the tank - we'll see how it fits. I will email the flat layout I used to laser cut the seat pan. It is not dimensioned and is in 1-1 scale dxf format. That's about all I can do since my pc that had Solid Works on it is dead :(

whts up,
man i love the build thus far.
i love the bratt style bikes, i have a cm200T i am going to bob or bratt not sure yet. love the seat was it pricey to get done??

Thanks for the comments. The seat cost me around $200. I provided the seat pan and the upholsterer did the rest.

What's the tire clearance like at the swingarm and where the inner fender would be? A straight-on side shot would be killer.

It's been a while since my last update but I have been putting time in on the project. The weather finally cleared enough to take the bike out for a shake-down. I was able to get in about 300 kms with my girl on the back. The suspension worked well with just my weight but was too soft for riding 2-up. I'll have to get some stiffer rear springs and crank up the preload on the forks. The bike is pretty much done. I intended to wrap the pipes with titanium header wrap but I'm liking the flat black and just may leave it.

Unless Redwing intended for their logo and stickers to be viewed upside down when the shock is mounted, then I would say I have them mounted right side up ;) It would make sense to have the heavier side mounted to the frame to reduce unsprung mass.

Thanks for the feedback

ha ha ha i guess that is a good point! ha ha ha looks awesome ! i love the white seat! baby blue or blue with flake and some white pin striping would be dope!

Man, That seat looks soooooo good with that tank! Nice work! Is that the stock tank?
