Yet another locO leoN inspired cafe seat project

Made some time to mess around with the KZ today and got a good start on my cafe seat build. I picked up a tank at the bike swap last weekend for free and found a stock seat at a local bike wrecker for cheap. I'm only using the seat pan from the stock seat and I'm keeping my original seat in case the wife wants to ride along I can swap it back on.

Here's the victim:

After some slicin', dicin' and grindin':

And sort of how it's going to sit on the seat pan:

I'm diggin' it so far ;D

Looks great so far. How did the width of the tank work out for you? Will you have to bend the tank any to get it to fit the bike frame?

Keep posting pics of the progress.

Thanks guys! The tank is just about the perfect fit at the back of the seat pan and about 2" too wide at the front but I'm pretty sure I can just pull it in to the seat pan as I go without anything distorting. I most likely won't get back at it until next weekend but I'll take more pictures as I go.

I didn't get any time to work on this last weekend and this weekend isn't looking so good either :(
I did pick up a 98-02 ZX6 tail light that I'm going to incorporate into the tail piece. It's a used one I got from a local Kawi dealer for the great price of .... zip! zilch! nada! FREEBIE! 8) So far I've only got $40 into this project and that was for the stock seat. I'm itchin' to get back to work on it but life keeps getting in the way.

The tail light looks like this one:

Very nice.. I got the same one hooked up on my cb750f. I used a trailer light tail light module and made it an integrated tail & turn light!!

Now that's good thinkin'! I've already shortened the stalks on the stock signals to suck them into the frame a bit and I'm designing the new seat and tail light so it is removable and I can switch back to the stock seat for 2-up riding when I need to so I think I'll leave the signals as is for now. Once I get the seat done I'll be removing the rear fender and stock tail light but the wiring will have connectors so I switch back and forth easier.

I'm really likin' that seat! ;D I'd like to build a similar seat for a project bike down the road.

You've really started something Noel! ::)

Im looking into doing th same...
You should have seen my girls face when I told her I was making my CB200 a single seater, so Im going to try and fab a way to throw my old seat back on quickly. I think im going to use a quick disconnect or some kind of harness plug for both of my tail lights so I can easily unplug one and plug the other up. I'm intersted to see how you do yours.

Spent a couple of hours staring at stuff in the garage yesterday and actually made some forward progress on my seat. No pictures yet but I got the tank section welded to the seat pan and started filling holes around the back and bottom. I'm going to try to get to the Cretins' bash down in Seattle at the end of the month so I'm going to try to get it done before then. I'll get some new pictures soon.

We're waiting!!...

Here's a really rough mock up so far. I cut up the og cover and used three layers of 1/8" landau foam for padding (not nearly enough!). I think the zx6 tail light is going to be too big for how I wanted to mount it so the search is still on for a smaller light.

I still need to do some more welding, grinding and filing but it's getting close. I like the look of it so far and I think it will work good once I chop down the fender and get rid of the big honking stock tail light. I will be making a much better cover and butt stop eventually.

How did you plan on mounting that taillight? What about cutting a hole on the back of the hump to the shape of the light and poke it through? Are you planning on keeping the fender on or modifying it?

I had planned to have the tail light mounted in the tail to do so I'll have to cut out the back of the seat pan in order to get the tail light to look "right". The ZX6 light is quite big and takes a lot of room inside the tail piece, using up valuable storage area. At this point I think it will be easier to just find something smaller. The stock fender will be replaced by a cut down or home made one. I'll probably make something that I can bolt up using the stock hardware and mount points that will only come to the back of the tail piece.

Hey,
I'll trade you your zx6 Tail light for a lucas style tali light that I have!!..

Send me a PM and I can send you pics

Cheers
