Restomodding a 74 CL360

Sorry trying to catch back up after the weekend Spring Thaw.
Ive got a disassembled carb in a box here. Maybe I need to lay it all out and make a map...for guys. And also a write up of how it all is supposed to function.

If you have both original Honda air/fuel adj springs. Use them. If you use the new "kit" springs, fix them.

This is a link to my 360 blog. scroll down to see examples of springs. BTW the jetting recipe in that post is old. I am not running those jets now.

Washer goes under the vacuum plug (above the mixture screw)

Thanks! One was fine, the other was all bent to Hell ::) That one I replaced. I don't usually work with crush washers that small. Now the wait for the correct parts.

Limited success yesterday. The floats came in so I installed them and got the carbs on the bike. For some reason the starter decided to start working, and the bike fired up. Both pipes were producing heat, and it didn't sound like a lawnmower anymore. However, it was idling at 3500 rpm. Turned her off, put the air filters on and started her up again. Hmm, not good. She kept bogging down. I may have gone overboard on the filter oil for the Uni filters. I turned the petcock to off, put the cover on, and headed inside since the mosquitoes were coming out in force.

ETA I managed to get the mufflers off. The top one was rusted to the pipe so it had to be cut off. Super loud now, need to find some decent mufflers next time I have some spare cash.

Has anyone used a foam sleeping pad to pad their seats? Was it hard to use? Obviously, I'd have to cut it to fit the seat panel, but http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4014696&ppp=25&cp=4406646.4413993.4414966.12669396 looks like a possible candidate. Anyone?

I've used it, bit hard but real good as a base layer with 3/8"~1/2"carpet foam underlay as a second layer.
Works out less than an inch thick and works well (at least for me)

Having spent the last several days on exactly that I would definitely heed PJ's suggestion. :)

So the seat panel, carpet foam underlay, then the sleeping pad on top, right? Do you use anything to keep them on the seat prior to covering or are they loose? I think I'm going to snag a cheap leather or denim jacket at the thrift store and use the materials to cover the padding. Yes, I stole that idea from another build, it seems like a good idea. It looks like I'll be getting the materials tomorrow, not tonight. I took the Ducati to work, the tank bag won't hold the pads and I'm stuck at work late today. Such is my life right now.

Other way round, seat pan, high density workout/sleeping mat, carpet foam (the shredded stuff)
If you use contact adhesive it stops things moving around but makes the join a bit stiffer
Your looking for support not soft, compliance works better than 'squishy'

Thanks. The stock seat padding looks like it's 3" thick! I'm keeping that as it is in case someone wants one for a restoration. After I get home, I'm hitting Dick's and Lowes for the padding and the thrift store for the jacket.. It's nice having all three within a mile of eachother!

Finally changed the oil. That stupid drain plug wouldn't budge and the sides were rounded off. I finally took a ball peen hammer and whacked it a few times at different angles and voila! it moved. Oil drained, new drain plug with anti seize and crush washer installed. Two quarts of oil and I'm in business. I managed to mess up one of my pod filters, so I'm ordering another set. Feh.

An interesting day yesterday. I didn't think I'd get anything done, but since the wife went to her Meetup group, I took another crack at the idling issue. I re-read the how to adjust the idle on these carbs, and the bike is now idling at around 1200 rpms. I used some superglue gel to fix the one pod I messed up, it should hold until the replacement arrives. I found my shooting muffs so I could hear myself think, which seemed to help. And I took PJ's advice and I managed to do a half-way decent job on the seat. I'm putting the seat on and taking the bike for a spin around the neighborhood later today.

If you think it's loud, it is and needs silencers.
The only speeding ticket I ever got was because cops heard me coming, I always have reasonable exhaust noise now, loud pipes don't save lives, just piss people off

I took her out for a spin today. I could not get her past 5000 rpms and she bogged down when I tried pushing her past that. I did get the seat on, and it's not great, but it'll do for now.

The mufflers should be here this week, once I get them on I'll try to get her going again. Since it's Memorial Day, all of the Harleys with open pipes were out in force today, so my little Honda went unnoticed.

Double check your timing with a strobe light.
Verify valve clearances, too.

I seem to be lacking that particular tool at the moment. I will procure one after the mufflers arrive, along with some other stuff. Prior to cleaning and rebuilding the carbs, it got to 9000 on one carburetor. That was in February. It's all stuff I need to go over anyway, so I'll get that stuff, too.

On a side note, I'm going to be making some mods to the 82 CX500 Custom I just got. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it, but that's going to have to wait until after the move. Either the carbs are gummed up or the timing is off, but there's a dead spot from just under 5000 rpm to 6000, then the power kicks in. Throttle response is off, too. Very annoying.

Timing is electronic on CX, either it works or doesn't. (never seen a high speed trigger coil go faulty, if low speed goes faulty bike won't run)

Same exact issue I had with mine. I think it was carb related, but I never got around to fixing it. I just dealt with it.

The CX500 bogs down right about where the secondary jets kick in. I haven't tried to pull the carbs on it yet, I'm not looking forward to doing so. The bunch on the CX forums seems to like the ultrasonic cleaning devices, since there are a lot of nooks and crannies in these carbs.
