I wanted to get into vintage motorcycle racing for a while now.
I came across a 1971 CB350 that was in good shape, had a NYS title and was cheap so I bought it.
The plan is to sort out the basics and use it on the street for the spring then over time turn it into a Formula CB bike.

how she started.
the sissy bar and ape bars were tossed and a stock set of bars went on.

Way cool. Will make sure I follow this one!

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

I have those same tires Got front, rear, tubes and rim strips for $90 hell of a deal!

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

seeing as I am planing on turning the bike into a track bike I didnt want to spend to much on street tires.
they will be fine at street speeds

1978 CB750F forks
very long lower legs for strength.
was looking for late VTR250 forks as they are double bushed but couldnt find a good set at a good price.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

That GT hub is seriously cryogenic.
I'm looking forward to following this build.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

im on the look out for light weight rims to work with my drums

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

also on the look out for a 1978 CB750F tripple. or cb550 35mm tripple.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

found out that the early CB750s had narrower front ends and i think it will work better with my GT750 drum and CB750F forks so im on the hunt for and early triple.

got a good deal in 4 so i bought them.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

a set of CB750 K1 triples are on the way yo me.
love using rare....ish vintage parts that a resto guy would pay big bucks for on a race project.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

well i guess i was wrong about the early triples being narrower. but all the same ill be fine and make it work.
most of the guys at the track run cb750 and cb550 triples.

i think ill run cartridges in the forks and get custom straight rate springs for the forks.
also need to mill off a few pounds off the GT750 drum too.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

Very cool man, looking forward to the front end swap. Just finnished mine and went with late style XS650 forks and triples. 35mm, cheap, and lots of inexpensive aftermarket parts for them.

Whats the difference between the width of the GT drum and the clearance between the forks?

For lightweight rims look for XS650 rims, they used shouldered aluminum rims for a bunch of years and you can get them for cheap usually. Most were 18" rear and 19" front so you might want to get two rears if you're going on the track with it. Only thing to look out for is # of spokes. I dont know what you're drums are but the XS rims are 36 hole.

bob.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

when i had the front end off my CB750K1 i tried to see how the GT drum fit and it looks like its going to be an easy install.
most of the race guys are running cb750 forks that i talk to. some say the F is better because of the taller lower legs but im not sure.

ive been keeping my eye out for XS rims.
yes i need two rears.
they are 36 hole
the thing is to modify them for the different spoke angles of the much larger GT drum
might have to just bite the bullet and get rims from buchannas.....

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

So....why didnt your run a CB550 front end?
550 forks arent as long and wont stick up thru the top tree as much as the 750 forks.

Also.....if you use SL350 triple clamps(upper and lower) it bolts right up to the stock frame....and you get a double pinch bolt lower triple clamp for the 35mm tubes. Thats the setup I use on my AHRMA race bike.......works great.

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

honestly i got a great deal on the CB750F forks so i figured i would run them

like the idea of the SL350 triple
what years had the 35mm forks?

Re: Slowly going from the street to the track.....well maybe

also what do you mean about the double pinch triple?
