Squirley's Kawi H1 build thread

Hey Squirley!

As far as hangers for the pipes go, we're gonna wrap a strap around the last cone of each pipe, weld it to the cone all the way around and run it up to a bracket/tab on the frame. If you look on my pic, it should go somewhere near the zip tie that's currently holding the pipe in place. The strap will be 1/2" wide I'd guess.

Jolly Moto kinda do the same thing I believe. 8)

Here's another pic.

You can see the mounting tab welded to the pipe. It doesn't wrap around the pipe as far as we will probably go, but you get the idea. :)

Also note the bracket connecting the stingers. I believe this is to reduce vibration and possible cracking. Neat idea! 8)

Oxford, that is the seat I am talking about. Unfortunately, I wont be able to cut mine back quite as far due to how I bent the frame rails, so it will probably end up looking more like a cr750 seat, but we shall see.

Drewski, thanks for the pics. I had planned on doing it like the last picture that you added, but may consider fully wrapping the tube. Is it common to see these mounting tabs shear?
Also, the stinger bracket is a good idea, keep everything nice and parallel. I can't quite tell, is there a triangular tab welded to each stinger and they share a common through hole?

Another note!

The designer of the pipes, Walms, hangs out mostly on the Kawasaki Triples Canada site! ;) ;D ;D He's a good old Canadian boy!! :D Contact him there if you're interested! 8)

He's got a wicked 500 powered KH400 Triple!! Reeds, bigger carbs, etc!! :o :o :o

You're welcome! ;D

I think the issue is vibration. They seem to like a solid mount on the pipe and then let it float a little (rubber) at the bike frame.

Cracking seems to be the most common problem.

Yes, you've got the right idea with the stinger bracket! 8)

Ya, Walm and I talk frequently, probably too much to his liking. That's what made me go with these style chambers, I will have the same motor in mine...Getting excited to get my cylinders and reeds back!

Oxford, heres those pics. Welded in cross bar is very simple, just a flat piece of bar stock that has holes for the tank studs. I have rubber grommets that go on top to isolate the tank. Also, a picture of the underside of the tank as requested. Hope this helps

Hey squirley I have run two smoke db for a long time and have never had an exhaust chamber break at the mount tab. Now granted not a kawi 750. But should be subject to as much vibration. I would make a tab like the second pic and rubber isolate it. Like a fairing rubber. I have some extra ones if you need some. Keep it up.

i have had a couple break at the tab. I learned that the tabs should be roughly twice the mount width, in two pieces. Meaning, an "L" shaped bracket on the chamber, and then that bolts to the strap holding it on. I haven't had trouble since. It's a frequency thing I guess. The wider the L on the pipe, the more it dampens the vibration or changes the freq.

Thanks Squirley, the bottom does look pretty close to the to the link that I sent you. Did you have Aylor do the porting for you as well? What stage did you end up going with? Are you planning on running flatslides? I think Walms is running 34mm, I always wondered it that was to big for the 500.

Oxford, Aylor is doing my stage two porting and redoing my squish. I am running 34 flatslides with reeds as well. Hopefully it should all work together nicely!

wow. I absolutely love it. That is one of my all time favorite tanks, just saw one on ebay go for $215USD and regret never buying it. Keep it up, we need some paint!

Just wanted to chime in here and say that for what its worth I am blown away by this bike Squirely. It is just amazing and keeps getting better.

This bike is looking great! Those pipes are something to be proud of. You've got talent, my friend. If they work as well as they look, I'm sure you could find some takers for a few sets!

Aren't you the same guy who built that awesome highly acclaimed cb550?

Thanks Trav, I really appreciate the compliments and yep, I built the black and gold 550 last year.

So for updates on this bike... Well, it has been painted, but don't get too excited because I'm not about to show it and spoil the wait. Other than that, not much has gone down as I have been away for several months. However, I did recieve news that my engine work has been completed by Aylor Engineering which included Stage two porting, head work, new pistons and most importantly, REEEEEEDS!

Sorry for the terrible pic.

Nice work so far Squirley!
Can you come and live next door to me so I can um "borrow" your tools ;D or you just do the welding for me. Imagine how good you would feel after helping out your neighbour ;D

What did you do with the original front end that was on the bike. I might be interested in the forks and front disc if you still have em.

DAM Squirely.. you build some bitch'n bikes!! another thread you have me hooked onto.. lol

whats the progress looking like now?
