TX500 build

Good job taking the photos. I think youve made very clear what needs to be done. I don't have much experience with pipes, but the distance to make the transition to move over one inch and continue in a straight line may be hard to do (if not impossible) on a bender. I just don't know. I do know the obvious that the adaptor from on size to another can easly be made and for pretty cheap. If you have to have someone hand build it it could get pretty time consuming=expensive. Maybe someone else who know can chime in here ???
One quick solution would be...(I know you won't want to hear this but,...) can you move the rear sets up. Looks like you could shorten the mounting brackets to what ever you may need?? No need to make a special S adaptor. Just would need a short straight adaptor and a little welding for the pipe. Looking at the rear sets again, it even looks like you could use just one hole on the frame instead of the entire bracket. Just thought I'd throw that out there. colpumpkin has the easiest solution which is to lengthen the main pipe to move the muffler back to clear but that could come with it's own negatives too.

I saw where a guy made his own baffles. I think it was on youtube. If I remember i was pretty impressed. I'll try to find the link.

Yep it was on youtube. CB 175. He has an s bend 2 into one as well, LOL. oops sorry, it's just a standard baffle. Cuts the sound down too much. I'm sure Ive seen a homemade baffle somewhere that doesnt cut down too much on the sound. I'll keep looking.

I have a 04 Triumph Bonneville that has the type of "S" curve that you are looking for.

If the Diameters work, you could cut the "S" out of the Triumph pipes and put them into your exhaust as a link.

There are a couple of problem with this idea. The first being it might turn out to be very ugly.

Another problem is that the you would need the stock mufflers and the headers because they come together in the middle of the "S". The mufflers are cheap. Just about everybody who has one of these bike replaces them. The problem would be the headers. Not so cheap, but they do show up on ebay every now and then.

Another problem would be that they might move the exhaust in to far.

So after writing this, it is beginning to sound like a pretty bad solution. But if you are close to a Triumph dealer you might want to go and check it out.

Could you space the re-sets out from the frame to clear the pipes or even use slightly longer brake and shifter pedals with a kink in them

Hey Joe, If I know you, your next post will be how you solved it because that's probably what youre working on it right now ;D So until then we are all going to continue throwing ideas at ya.
I'm still thinking the rear sets could be a cheap easy solution. Would a couple of spacers and longer mounting bolts work? Might move everything out enough??
Haven't found the homemade baffles that impressed me yet. Maybe right here in the $50 thread...

Hey Joe,

You can make some tight "S" bends pretty cheap and easy.

Have a muffler shop bend up a couple of 90 degree tight radius bends of the proper diameter (or get them here http://www.carparts.com/HEARTTHROB-TIGHT-RADIUS-MANDREL-BENT-ALUIMINIZED-STEEL-TUBING/GP_2009635_N_111+10718+600022962_10618.car)

Cut the radius at the center of the bend, flip the pipe around and have one of your drunk buddies weld it back, then weld or clamp to your headers/mufflers.

Ok Joe, what did you end up doing?? CC I thinks has the best and easiest solution.

DUDE that is a fantastic IDEA!!!! i may have to do that....

ok... I HAD A DREAM!

Well I did last night… here is what I am thinking, I hope this make sense, let me know what you think…
So either way if I run my exhaust past the rear set, hanging it or just getting it past is going to be a bitch to do and make it look clean…
I am going to make a version of short shots. I have a buddy that has his 2 stock baffles out of the short shots I gave him for his Dyna. I am going to take those and turn them down till they will fit into the pipe, I will then slide those in and about 2 in from the end of the header… I think what was thrown me off is nothing I did looked finished . Just did not flow with the bike… so I will get some brass (or copper) tubing 1 ¾ in… I am going to split that in half, drill out the back protion to look like a machine gun barrel, and then make some small spacers 1/2 in. Then I will toss on a exhsut turn down tip (so the exhaust is not blowing on my feet), take my cut piece of brass tubing and use the spacers to gap it off the header, just drill some holes in the header pipe, use some longer steel rivits and rivet the shield on… what you think about that? think that would look cool? it would basicly go from right after the bend to right after the clamp on the turn down… I think it may look good! Then I don’t have to worry about hanging anything.

As far as looks, that could be a fine solution. However, the closer the baffles get to the head the higher the back pressure will go, as you are reducing the volume the exhaust gas occupies. So if you are using baffles that are intended for longer pipes, you will have to reduce the restriction of the baffles proportionately to the reduction in pipe volume.

BTW Joe, I have a friend in Chicago in the upholstery biz. If you want to go the pro route with the seat, I could put you in contact. And if he isn't into it, I know a place down on Western Ave. that did my buddy's Bmw R100/7 seat for about 150, including materials and it looked just like stock. I also know some great sources for covering materials if you decide to do it yourself. Just want you to get done, bro, lol. If I end up coming in April, I will be riding my Beemer so we will be able to head out for a ride.

HELL YA MAN!!! let me know the info!!!! i look forward to April then man! we can hit up the roads... you will get to meet the crazy ass crew i ride with!
intrsted in the seat man!!!
i am using baffels that are made for short shot pipes... if i understand what you are sayin righ you are saying i may hvae to cut them down a bit as there may be To much back pressure... is that correct?

I used some Volkswagon chrome tips on my XS750 project. I had all three staggered out the side. They are cool because the have small baffles inside. My XS sounded like a monster with these on. I have to up my main jets 2 sizes though. I believe they are 1 3/8" I.D. They are worth a look anyway. (and they are dirt cheap) haha

You need to go add this to the $50 mod thread since you brought it up!

I used these same tips on a couple smaller bikes, they worked out pretty well. Not quiet but not bad either...

hell ya! great idea... however... that would blow exhaust all over my kicks when i am riding... i am going to make my own baffels and do turn downs i should have it completed this week, early this week... ill post pics as i go
