Can I run my 1980 XS 650 "special" without a fender or bracing of any kind?

I need an 18" or 19" 36 spoke front rim and I'd like to convert my rear wheel from 16" to 18" as well. So either a 400 or 450 rear rim and a 350 18" or 19" front.

So getting into wiring and electrical is, for me, like floating in space. I'm totally hopehelpless. Does anyone know anything about these bikes and how to wire them? I just want to run the motor. No lighting, no riding. I just want to hear it run.

does anyone know if they changed the motor design at all for the xs650's from early 70's to the early 80's? if you DO know, do you also know what the difference between the "special" models and the "standard" models are?

I'm rebuilding the carbs on my XS 650 and I broke one of the gaskets for the float bowls when disassembling them...would it be ok to trace and cut my own gaskets for it until I buy a replacement?

I got an xs 500 and rumour has it that they get too hot sometimes and the head can crack. I've seen guys put in an oil cooler and other things to cool her down, but what about exhaust wrap? Will that help keep heat AWAY from the motor or will it insulate it and keep heat in and around the head? ???

Last night I had a nightmare that I was out riding, pretty hard, mind you, and I stopped where I was going and a elderly couple stopped and said "nice bike. but are there some pieces missing?" I looked at my bike and the top triple tree was missing completely. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!

The front brake lines for my XS 500 are in need of replacement. I was going to order a 26" braided line from DC and was wondering if it would be ok to hook it from the master cylinder to the secondary, bypassing the little jumper hooked to the headlight. any problems?
