1977 KZ650B1 "Psycho Therapy"

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Rocan you got it! I am getting some aluminum from a sign guy tomorrow and I'm going to cut, drill and polish a piece for the gauge and ignition switch. Then I have to make one for the speed sensor so as soon as I get that its riding and review time!

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

I cant believe you got that bike for $750, I paid $100 for mine and it looked like hell.....still does haha

I made the gauge bracket today out of a piece of plate aluminum from the scrap yard. Gauge is mounted with rubber inserts and all stainless hardware. I still have to make the speed sensor bracket , maybe tomorrow. Like the ignition switch? Any thoughts on RFID proximity switch or 3 position toggle hidden instead of ignition switch?

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Put the Ignition switch into the headlight, centered just above your gauge.
Any up dates on this project?
;)

Keep up the good work! Keeping my eyeballs on this project. I really like your setup on the bars and single gauge *thumbs up*

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Coming right along sir. Looking good. I agree with the headlight idea..but I'm goofy, so I'd put it off to the side and down so it's more "hidden" and doesn't have a key sticking out the top of it.

This is what I did with mine and I put a toggle under my seat to use as a battery disconnect... it worked well but you'll need to be careful where you position the iggy switch in the bucket. There are a LOAD of wires to go inside and you get interference with the light and the connections. The toggle you see in this pic is to shut off the headlight...

Any updates on this. I just purchased the gauge for my build and id love to see how the speed sensor is mounted.thanks!

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

+1 Im wiring mine up right now. Looks like you got farther than I did. Love to see which wires went where. Im especially interested in how you did the RPMs.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

I have a few hundred miles on this gauge now, I love it! I mounted the RPM wire directly to the coil(It should be soldered, I did not)) and the rpms jump slightly but close enough 98% of the time. I ground down a bicycle spoke to a small flat surface and it allowed me to release the pins on the factory plug so I could move them where I needed them without cutting!
This is how I mounted the speed sensor. I cut and drilled a piece of scrap aluminum and mounted it to the fender bolt!

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Nice, man.

Sorry, im still confused with the RPM wire... you took the bare copper from the grey wire on the gauge and wrapped it around the insulated spark plug wire close to the coild, correct?

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Nope, I tried that with irratic reading so I put it right on the coil wire from the ignition itself where its soldered to the connector on the coil(green). Ideally I would like to solder it there but right now its wrapped really good and taped.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

A little update. I recently removed the old seat, tail piece, fender, turns, inner fender etc. The hoop I bought from DTT brother Cafegoose. The hoop is just in fitting stages and is not welded YET! The plan is to weld hoop, finish detabbing and then glass a bump stop. Dan Delong @ CWS wiring is making a completely brand new wiring harness for the bike. The old rect and reg are gone and a new combo unit will be used all mounted under the seat as well as a new 1lb A123 battery.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1

Just found this thread and gotta say, great score on the bike and great job on the build so far. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out!

Re: 1977 KZ650B1

Thanks cyclefreak. The plan is to get the seat done, sort out the electrical and get it back to rideable for the summer. This winter i will tear it down for painting, rearsets, brakes drilled, clipons etc

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 "need bump stop critique"

I'll stir the pot gently...I think the sides come UP too tall before arcing (is that a word?) inward. I'd try to match it to how the tank looks, but that's my personal preference. Other than that.. :p I like it! This is going to be great!

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 "need bump stop critique"

In regards to your tail design, I don't hate it, but to add some design cohesion, try mimicking the slope angle that's on the back of your gas tank. If you match the sloping angle of both the rear of the tail and tank, it'll look like the tail was meant for the bike. Also, from one KZ owner to the next, great bike!!
