From the rear it is too "nothing",neither high/round like a 60's Honda GP seat or pointy/round like a 70's Ducati 750 SS.It looks like a throat lozenge from behind and looks too flat on top to my eye.The front of the bum stop is about 3-4" too far forward and it won't allow you to push your butt back to get behind the bars at high speed, this will be even more of an issue when you have a seat pad on it.

you asked ;)

Swivel, the only thing I disagree with is the 3-4 inch too far forward. It really depends on how tall you are :p Us short people don't need that extra space! haha

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 "need bump stop critique"

Swivel i agree that it looks like a stock honda seat from rear. In regaurds to the didistance its all been measured out. Crtiquers thank you! Stay tuned for changes to come. Thats why i love these forums, i would have ended up with a glassed throat lozenge from 1960's japan.

nah man it's all about what pleases your eye. If you like that look i'd say go for it.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1

well I tried my hand at making a seat today and yeah, Its not as easy as Herm makes it out in the vid. I'll have to give it a go again soon. I made a F%$^&ing mess! Lots of air bubbles, inaccurate hardener mixing, some of its dry and some is still wet(30min later) 1 batch ate right through the bottom of the plastic cup and went all over the floor

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

i did a write up on my experience with seat making recently. don't worry i had a tough time too. My 2c would be to put a peice of extra foam on the center of the bottom to elevate the edges of the mold to allow the fiber to hang on the edges it allows you to really flatten the edges out. Use cloth and i honestly used my gloves hands to really smooth out the bubbles while it was still wet. Doesn;'t look to bad in the pic bro you might want to see how it is after some sanding.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

Well i cut the mold off the table and its pretty flimsy. I used maybe 1 1/2 layers of cloth. If i decide to use it should i just rough it up and add more cloth and resin?

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

IF you do want to just go with it I would sand it as well as you can, I hope you have a power sander that stuff is tough, then wipe it with rubbing alcohol or a wet cloth to get dust off. Then layer it 2 more x. After the last layer do a layer or 2 of just brushed on resin this will really smooth it out. Good luck.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

AX,

Should I just pour it into several cups and then add hardener 1 at a time? I think I will place an order with uscomposites. The resin I used here was west marine boaters resin which says its designed as a final coat and maybe not the best for general layup. I may just order that 435 that Roccity suggested elsewhere.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

I would definately work in small batches you don't want that stuff to start to gel up it's easiest to work with the less viscous it is. Plus if you already have the ounces of resin measured you can add harderner pretty quick if you run out of resin in the middle of the layer.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 seat butchered

made the battery and fuse etc. tray which will be screwed to frame through drilling and tapping. The battery is going under the hump and the rect and fuses are going to be mounted on the underside where you sit. The flashers and stuff are going up under tank.

Also placed an order for some resin and mat for a second try on a seat.

Second try(well third actually) at a seat mold and I am much happier. I am awaiting some stainless hardware,Resin from us composites, exhaust wrap, new ignition switch and custom wiring harness from cws wiring to get this back together until winter when I intend on tearing her down for a complete paint job, knee dents, rearsets and maybe some tires.

You are going to hit that tank with a hammer!!!!! I would pick up a cheap crappy one off ebay or at a swap meet or something if you are gonna dent it up.
