1977 KZ650B1 "Psycho Therapy"

dang man, nice work on the brazing!! did you do that yourself? i've been wanting to try my hand at that. oh, and you mind if i ask where you got that battery? i've been looking for one that size. i've been looking at moty design, just wondering if yours was any cheaper than $150 :/

I think this is the battery he got http://www.ebay.com/itm/8-cell-A123-motorcycle-start-battery-13-2v4-6ah-12v-new-/190529686660?pt=US_Rechargeable_Batteries&hash=item2c5c744c84 as this is what I was looking at also doing but ended up going with this battery since I wanted terminals http://www.batteryspace.com/LiFePO4-26650-Motorcycle-Battery-12V-6Ah-72Wh-140A-rate-in-Aluminum-Box.aspx

^^^ interesting! how's that battery you went with working for you, any problems? i'd like terminals as well, and i like the fact that it comes from the usa and not china. by the way, your screen name threw me for a loop, my name is jeff and my last name begins with a W, haha.

i don't want to hijack the thread so come over to my build and I can answer any questions regarding it.

Just saw the last few posts as I've been laying low recently but should get back in action soon! Yes thats the battery and I have yet to run the bike with it , however there was somebody over on kz650.info running it without issue as long as you run a modern rectifier vs. the original 2 part system the 77 has. The brazing was done by me and cleanliness is the key and everything will flow!!!!! I had aspirations to build custom steel bike frames(someday soon) so thats where I learned to braze. www.oswaldcycleworks.com Tom is the fu^&in man when it comes to brazing.

I am finishing up the wiring on my gauge can you give me little information on how you wired it . What is the brown wire hooked up to and when it says black (voltage) is that for power. Also how and where did you mount the magnet, it looks like the rotor but wasn't sure how you did it.

Finally! Here I come. There will be lots of updates in the next few weeks. I had a whole bunch of shit powder coated and have 1.5 years of parts accumulation on carts in the garage. This week I plan on polishing hubs and lacing newly powdered rims with shiny new erection causing Buchanan stainless spokes(on shelf in garage). Stay tuned and thanks to those that have!

Rebuilt powdered caliper with new pads, all new seals and stainless banjo. Also have custom Spiegler line and Busa master to go with..

Front wheel powdered and laced up with Buchanan stainless spokes and nipples ready for truing. It took about 30 min to lace up. I'll have about $300 in the wheels between powdercoating, spokes and bearings.

Nice!! I am thinking of using those rear sets too. Curious to see how yours turn out. My bike is a 1978 B2, seems like the kickstand would be in the way of the shifter when using the passenger peg mount. Love your bike

Nice.

I am running the same tires. The 712's are a great tire for the price. Watching this one!

Front wheel with new tire! Yes I scratched the fu#%ing rim putting it on and Yes I popped the fu#%ing tube putting it on.. The plan now is to build rear wheel and then take both wheels to dealer and let them change the tube in the front and mount the rear and balance both wheels.

Bummer man. I learned a while back that I wouldn't changed a tire with a tube anymore. Guy on CL lives near me and does it for $30 including balancing..well worth it for me to NOT mess up my wheels! Keep going on this thing, I'm loving the updates!

Tank back from welder and looking good! I found a rust hole in rear rim so I need to order a new one from z1 and have it powder coated before I can build it. Its a real bummer to find this out after it was already powdered.

Re: 1977 KZ650B1 ****NEW DANMOTO ACEWELL KNOCKOFF****

Sorry to drag you all the way back to page 2 of this thread, but just wondering how you ended up placing the magnet for the speedo sensor? I have the same speedo and trying to suss where to mount this thing.

Great build by the way!

I have a few hundred miles on this gauge now, I love it! I mounted the RPM wire directly to the coil(It should be soldered, I did not)) and the rpms jump slightly but close enough 98% of the time. I ground down a bicycle spoke to a small flat surface and it allowed me to release the pins on the factory plug so I could move them where I needed them without cutting!
This is how I mounted the speed sensor. I cut and drilled a piece of scrap aluminum and mounted it to the fender bolt!

I'm not the author of the thread here, but when I did the two Acewell gauges I used, I drilled into the front rotor. I drilled a hole that was slightly smaller than the magnet circumference at first, and then drilled the correct circumference to the depth I wanted. I then used a good two part epoxy to keep the little bugger in there. Good news is that it's a magnet and wants to stay put anyways, the epoxy is just to keep it there. Oh and the reason I drilled the smaller hole through was so that I could get some epoxy on from the backside. (note, you do not drill into the brake pad surface! Just one of the "spokes" of the disc. Make sure it doesn't stick up enough to hit anything on it's way around.
