1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update march 31

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - Help received, thanks guys

I just realized today that I hadn't caught up on your build. Amazing stuff here. Where you at on this thing?

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - Help received, thanks guys

Haven't Updated much but there has been a lot of motion going on up in the ole shop. Cowl and tire hugging fender is almost finished, engine has been painted and is ready for rebuild. Some new tools have been made such as a pressure pot for my sandblaster. Mig welder has been wired up at the shop and is working amazingly so now for some frame mods. Nothing major just cleaning up spots filling in holes.

I've shorten the electrical wire coming from the handle bars about 4 inches. Headlight brackets were made and need to be finished. Found the short in my wiring harness that kept blowing fuses. Dented the tank for the clipons but no knee dents.

The seat and tire hugger look awesome, I'm very proud of them. And things that I was struggling with have now solidified in my brain and I can execute them, such as the two up seat pan. I tend to process how I'll do something before I start, but once it's been worked out I fly to completion.

I'll be posting some new pics later

So the to do list:
-headlight brackets
-tach and speedo wiring/ lighting
-indicator wiring/headlight install
-seat pan and seat
-paint everything
-engine back together
-sand and prep tank for paint
-finish shaved top tree, paint or polish?
-shorten throttle and clutch cables
-relocated electronics, fuse box, ignition switch
-rewire wiring harness
-rewire cbr tailight
-polish some parts
-Put the whole thing back together
-ride that bitch like no tomorrow

This weather has put a fire under my ass to hurry up and get finished. I figure if I push I can get it done in 2 weeks. but there is still a shiteload to do and with seeing Reverend Horton Heat, 2 birthdays parties, a night out with my SO and her having a ladies night all this week, it's going to be difficult.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Glad to see plenty of motion. I get what your saying on the eureka moment. I'm on the verge of a break through myself, so I feel your excitement. Hurry up with a pic of that seat and hugger!

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Yeah Jay, let's see some pics of the progress! Sounds like it's gonna be good.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

as promised pics of what I've been up to for the past couple of weeks

Made a couple of days ago, new sandblaster pressure pot. Don't worry I bought a brand new tank. I enjoy my face on the front side.

More to come but I've got to get back to work. There are more pics and a write up about each process on my blog. (shameless plug). I only get about 3 hours 3 times a week to do this so I think I'm making okay progress. I'll try to upload more pics later.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

9 hours a week - I'd say you making pretty damn good progress. Everything's lookin great Jay - keep it up!

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Thanks guys.

Can't really decide which way I want to go on the rocker covers any thoughts?
Ribbed or smooth, personally I prefer the smooth one but the ladies do enjoy the ribs.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Nice work Jay. My vote is for the smooth rocker covers.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

So do you have a plan in mind for the build? That might help you kinda frame things in your head for just this kinda thing.
That being said, I've had a quiet love affair with cast aluminum for quite a while now. What about having them sandblasted to simulate a fresh from the foundry look?

Didn't think about that, sandblast the covers rather than polish them. Certainly would be a cool contrast against the glossy frame and engine. Kinda going the opposite way of everyone else. I'm going to blast a smooth cover tonight and see how I like it. Would save me sometime in the build if i'm not spending hours polishing.

I was going to do the rib covers because of the style of airboxes I was going to use with the 1 into carb setup, but because of time running out and I want to ride I'm using a modified existing airbox. So I was swinging to the smooth cover.

I've figured what I'm going to use the soup ladle for but that will be shown at the reveal. As well I've got an idea for a battery holder and airbox screen that I'm working on. Would be better if I had access to a cnc or laser cutter to get it as polished as I would like but a jigsaw and files will have to do.

Some seat work over the past couple of weeks. My brother came out and helped with the seat pan. Someone doesn't know the difference be dovetail and dart. Can you spot the mistake.

The cowl looks huge in these photos but it really is, IMO and really the only one that matters ::), flows with the bike.

As well after blasting the rocker covers last night as per Swaggers suggestion, I really am digging on that cast look against the gloss black engine. Really stands out. My brothers point was it looks like paint from far away which makes you want to come see it up close, where as shiny polish parts look good but nobody wants to see it up close.

I'll post pics of the sandblasted covers later.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Nice jay! You did a lot over the last couple weeks, and it really shows. That hugger looks factory!

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Looking fantastic. I'm really liking the inner fender, bump stop combo. they compliment each other well.

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Fuck brother! You have been very busy while I was away! Very nice work you have done! Looking great!

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update may 17

Hey thanks guys, managed to get some more work this past week, my brother has been up giving me a hand with some things. Unfortunately stuff keeps getting in the way..
-Wiring harness is being modified because the ignition switch and fuse box has been moved.
-Taillight is getting some license plate down lighting.
-My brother came up with a great idea on mounting the tank to the frame and rocked out a bracket for me to weld on. He could of done it but since I've been busting his balls on sanding my tank he figured I should fck it up. poor kid. Over 30 years of taking my shit.
-Bracket for tire hugger has been made. Just need to drill holes into the swingarm for fasteners
-Need to work up the courage to put that engine back together. More concerned about not putting things in right then having to tear it back down. But it's gotta get done so bite the bullet and get it finished

Re: 1979 CB650 Cafe Redo - update June 25, Something for ya Staffy

been awhile since I've uploaded anything online but in the spirit to motivate me to get this thing done I'll put up some pics, get some feedback, and your suggestions.

Finally have the wiring harness modified. Relocated the fuse box and ignition switch. I changed the switch from a honda 5 pin to a yamaha 3 pin. It fit's better in the new location. But took some figuring out how to do. I'll post a how-to later, it's a little involved.

getting the engine partially back, need to lap the valves and reassemble. Arg. No time. Well, onto the pics

Seat pan. This tab will fit under an opening in the frame and below the new tank mount. Just showing off my welding skills. lol

The head of the bolt was cut off, then the threaded end was welded to the bottom of the pan. Holes in the frame cross member line up with the bolts and everything is locked together. The pan sits on rubber strips.

DSC08403.JPG

The Cowl is held to the pan with socket head bolts. Every bolt visible will eventually be replaced by these. Part of the theme.

Alright. This is for Staffy. A while back he challenged me to use a ladle somewhere on the bike. I've been thinking about this for a while. Brandon and a few other gaves some good suggestions. But this is what I came up with

Sorry Bud, it's not a soup ladle but a stainless measuring cup

I'll cut the closed cell foam around the cup

That all I've got for now.
