Parts are coming in daily. 8)

Got my tires yesterday and filters, plug caps, and handlebars today. A lot of work still to go. Started putting more filler on the tank to prep it for primer. The seat got sanded and is ready for mounting before I put the filler on it.

Is the throttle cable routed correctly? I thought the right side cable got routed under the spine.

Thanks buckeye!

You may be right... In that image, the cable is lying there, not in its final routing spot.

Is this the way you're referring to? I am piecing this bike together based on, memory and where I can get things to fit. ;)

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

Another productive Saturday.

I am almost done with mounting the seat. The drill battery went dead so I am waiting on that. I just need to add some aluminum support bars to the underside of the seat to give it a bit more structural integrity whenever my fat ass is on it. For my wife, its already good enough.

I got up this morning and went to get all the parts I would need from the hardware store, came back, laid them all out on the bench and just stared for a good while. Didn't know where to start. As with most things that I do from scratch, they are far from perfect. Of course, this is the case with the seat. From the start, my intention has been to use the stock hinges and lock, to give the bike a little more functionality then just hacking off every little bit of protruding metal. So I had intended to rivet some aluminum bars along the inside bottom edges of the seat and fasten the hinges and what-not to those. Since my fiberglassing isn't the work of the gods, I didn't leave enough room for this, or to even orientate the hinges like stock. Shocking, I know. So I improvised as usual.

img_1038.jpg

I broke out the nitrile gloves and fiberglassed the hinges on. I think it worked out quite well.

img_1039.jpg

I was able to run a short piece of aluminum support for the lock side, and good thing, because it will take much more stress with the closing. I will rivet that to the seat once its filled and painted.

But of course, two hinges and a lock aren't enough support. Enter the bumpers. Drilled holes through them and mounted them on tine pins, counter-sunk into the rubber. Cotter keys to hold them in place. The angled aluminum that I have will be riveted to the underside of the top of the seat, above the bumpers, to more evenly distribute the load.

I checked the mail this evening and got my grips, throttle tube, and horn. The horn is mounted and I should get the handlebars drilled for the wiring and everything mounted on them by tomorrow evening.

Thanks for looking!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

I almost got everything I wanted to do today done. The tires are made for tubeless, but can be ran with tubes. Therefore, the beads are incredibly stiff. So I am going to take them to get mounted tomorrow. The braces for the underside of the seat are made and marked, but I wasn't happy with how they laid. The underside isn't even so I want to groove out the fiberglass so that the braces lie flat. I will do that some other time. After that I just have to drill the holes and its done. The rear turn signal brackets are done and the paint is curing.

I got the handlebars drilled out, ran the wiring, and mounted it all up.

Like a dummy, I put the grip on the throttle tube before I cut it, so I am just going to make the protruding part black. Or figure something else out.

You could try to pry it back off?
Carefully push a screwdriver in under the grip with the roll off the bike and drip some dish soap under there, do that a few places round the roll and it should slip off with some effort and persuation, granted you havn't glued the thing on there.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

So who thinks that 3.25" is enough clearance for the back tire...?

And a sneak and the mounted wheels on the bike.

What's the tire gap with the rear shock fully compressed?

I'm not able to find out yet. I need to take the spring out and measure the spring-less compression to see if I'll be safe, or need to add a bump stop. I just have nothing strong enough in my garage to take the force to compress the spring. I'll get it done sometime.

I was also planning on putting the tail light on the underside of the rear hoop, and it looks like I won't be able to do that anymore. I may extend a bracket straight out from the rear hoop with the tail light/license plate. I'm not a big fan of the side mounts.

I believe my rear-sets came today, so more updates soon to come.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

Does anyone know of a kickstand that would easily fit this bike? I could grab one off of ebay, but I'm not sure how to tell if its going to work...

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

How did those shocks fit? I could not find a set that had a small enough bolt for the lower bushing and ended up drilling it out.
Nice build.

They fit nicely, but didn't come with bolts for the lower bushings so I have to go get some. The swingarm has the original bushing which I may have to drill out a bit for the bolt, but I don't know yet. Small price to pay though.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

yeah. I could find no direct fit after market shocks for mine and the stock stuff is crap after 40 years of abuse. As for travel i went with a progressive shock and their are 3.65" of travel. If that give you an idea. It would be real hard to get all 3.65 of it.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

Well this weekend was suppose to have some good updates but not as much got done as I wanted to do.

I got the rearsets and put them on but I need to do some fabrication for both the brake linkage and shifter. Waiting on a couple parts for that. I also picked up the paint from San Leandro Color. It's a 2-phase Pearl White, not unlike the Ducati Pearl White! Really excited for that. I still have to finish the filler work on the seat before I start though.

img_1056.jpg

I did get the bottom of the seat grooved out for the angle braces and got the holes drilled.

I had previously made a friend at the local Ducati Bike Night in San Jose who owns a '66 Ducati 250, and does prototype fabrication. As we were discussing his motorcycle, I discovered that he makes all the hose clamps and ties for the bike himself and got him to come over to take measurements for everything I still need on the 175. Should be about a week or so until he can get them fabbed, but they look excellent.

All the cables and final Honda parts I need are on their way, the headlight has finally come, and I am having the vintage vinyls for the sides of the tank made. Still much more to come.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

What cables are you replacing? Did you get them from motion pro? I know honda doesnt have most of them but I have nt looked around to much to find them yet since that part of my build is a ways off. Interested to see what these hose clamps look like. Never heard of somebody making their own.

Honda can only get the tach cable. All the others I got off of Ebay and new(NOS) replacements for $12-$20/ea; speedo, F brake, clutch.

I'm excited about the clamps, I hadn't heard of making your own either.

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

So I built a workbench...

img_1065.jpg

So that I could get the shocks finally mounted since I needed a workbench mounted vise. Springs were compressed via looped ratchet strap. There is a bump stop on the cylinder, and the uncompressed distance is just over 3".

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

Hey guys, new to the site, but not motorcycling. Been following this build closely as I have a 72 cb175 I will be doing very similar to seekingzero. You have done a great job so far seekingzero! Let us know how those rearsets from viet work out!

I also really like how you've done your seat incorporated into the factory hinges. Brilliant!

Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!

Thanks andy.

Welcome to the site tim. The rearsets look good and everyone has seemed very pleased. I'm sure I will be another satisfied customer! ;) Slow going on the bike right now since I'm busy with work. I still hope to have it done before September's end.
