Re: 71 Indignant CB175 - Seat Mounted!
Another productive Saturday.
I am almost done with mounting the seat. The drill battery went dead so I am waiting on that. I just need to add some aluminum support bars to the underside of the seat to give it a bit more structural integrity whenever my fat ass is on it. For my wife, its already good enough.
I got up this morning and went to get all the parts I would need from the hardware store, came back, laid them all out on the bench and just stared for a good while. Didn't know where to start. As with most things that I do from scratch, they are far from perfect. Of course, this is the case with the seat. From the start, my intention has been to use the stock hinges and lock, to give the bike a little more functionality then just hacking off every little bit of protruding metal. So I had intended to rivet some aluminum bars along the inside bottom edges of the seat and fasten the hinges and what-not to those. Since my fiberglassing isn't the work of the gods, I didn't leave enough room for this, or to even orientate the hinges like stock. Shocking, I know. So I improvised as usual.
I broke out the nitrile gloves and fiberglassed the hinges on. I think it worked out quite well.
I was able to run a short piece of aluminum support for the lock side, and good thing, because it will take much more stress with the closing. I will rivet that to the seat once its filled and painted.
But of course, two hinges and a lock aren't enough support. Enter the bumpers. Drilled holes through them and mounted them on tine pins, counter-sunk into the rubber. Cotter keys to hold them in place. The angled aluminum that I have will be riveted to the underside of the top of the seat, above the bumpers, to more evenly distribute the load.
I checked the mail this evening and got my grips, throttle tube, and horn. The horn is mounted and I should get the handlebars drilled for the wiring and everything mounted on them by tomorrow evening.
Thanks for looking!
