89 cbr600 Baby Fighter! *Stage 2 Initiated!*

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

swing arm swaps on these bikes are very very common and can be done with only a bit of work. i would recomend swaping to a new swing arm and rim in back and match the front tire wiht a front end swap as well, build a wicked fighter

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

GAH! I'm forced to buy new calipers for my POS bike.

Stripped some plug nuts trying to change my brake pads. And I also snapped a bolt in half on one of the caliper mounting brackets so half of it is still in the hole.

I just want an 05 cbr600rr now. Too much stress and money going into cheap POS project bikes.

Why do you think I got a 2000 Duc Monster?!?

While I have great love for the brothahs (and sistahs) who build old heaps into new, fresh rides, it also takes a bottomless bank account and/or great mechanical skills to get them right.

why not just remove the bolt? that would be so much easier

I would normally ask the same question; however, if this experience was anything like my last one, I understand exactly where he's coming from. If I don't move the Kawa on CL, then it will become a winter project.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Got new calipers for $60 locally and I'm waiting on my newer impact driver to come in the mail.

The bike is a go now. Just a few things to work out. That last bit was just frustrating, I was at a point where I wanted to buy a new bike, and I still do. Just glad I have something to ride for the time being.

I don't think I'm going to do more custom work on this thing, except put an f4i shock to raise the back up an inch or a half (maybe). Just gonna save up, buy the bike I want, and sell this at the same time.

It takes $$$ to buy a new bike, but if you know what you're doing, you can get a lot more bike outta a vintage project for less $$$. How much bike for how less $ depends

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Today's attempt was to replace the rear brake pads since I don't really have a rear brake lol.

Well I ran into a problem, one of the rear caliper pistons is seized, which probably explains the poor rear braking. How would I be able to get it open? Should I soak it in brake cleaner or Pb blaster?

I'd pack something hard behind the good one to stop it moving, hook it back up to your brake line, and pump the lever until it moves the stuck one. That should do it. Bit of a fiddle perhaps having to bleed the brakes again (unless you haven't disconnected it?), but will still be quicker than soaking, which may not work anyway.

Use the force Luke ;)

If the hydraulic pressure from braking won't free it, then lubricant alone won't be enough. Try removing the caliper from the mounting bracket while still connected to the rear brake, and pump the brake to see if the piston will budge. Try restricting the good piston to isolate the bad one.

Same thing happened to my rear brake. You need to separate the cases, then you'll find that the brake pistons are frozen in the caliper body. I put it in a vice and used a vice pliers to pull the pistons out. That, in combination to chiseling it out at the groove that the seal sits on. Which means you'll have to replace the piston and oring/seals, of course. If you're strapped for cash, I would find a safer means of removing it, but grinding down the corrosions that caused it to seize for sure (you'll still need that O-ring and seal).

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Compressed air is the "shop" way to do it. Or some people ues a grease gun to push the piston out - but it gets pretty messy when the piston "pops"

Most of the time, the piston seizes because corrosion occurs under the piston seals. This expands and pushes the seal onto the piston - locking it up. You need to pull the piston, remove the seals and scrape out the corrosion from the seal galleys. If the piston is badly pitted, then you need to replace it (might be easier to get a complete 2nd hand caliper if it's this bad).

If you are lucky, you can re-use the seals, but they may leak. New seals are in order if that is the case.

Not a hard job, just tedious / messy. One of the least favourite jobs in the "shop", so that's why a shop will charge $$$ to re-build them

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Midnight forgot to mention that you will need to down 5 bud heavies before trying to move the piston! That is the key to his proccess! Hahahaha!

Yep, a 6 pack in an unheated garage in the dead of winter will get you motivated in no time ;D

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Lmfao! You guys are too funny! But I think some will be required...

I'm still waiting for my darn impact driver to show up in the mail so I can replace my front pads. Don't want to strip any bolts again!

Since I have changed my mind and plan to keep the bike until I have money for a newer one, two mods are in store.

I'm going to fit a ducati monster seat and at the same time I'll be installing the f4i shock to raise the rear. These mods will come first before anything else. A new chain will be needed soon too :(.

Recently just painted that chrome headlight surround black and lowered the brackets. I also used heat to squeeze the seat close together (not pictured) but it makes the rear fairing not fit, so now I'm just going to put the ducati seat on. I really want a f2/f3 tank on the beast too...

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

the front end on that scoot needs somehting, the rest of the bike is so fat and the front end is just bare, have you thought about bobbing the front of the fender? Maybe some fork boots?

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

it should be able to be pushed out with the pedal if not soak it in pb blaster. you'll need to rebuild the caliper.

I agree. The front end is bare. I'll be making a front fender for it out of fiberglass after I do my seat mod. I'm not sure what else though. Fork boots would look pretty cool. I wanted to make fork tube covers to make the front end look more beefier.

I'd make them black, of course lol.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Back from the dead.

So I broke another bolt in the caliper bracket lol! That means I'll have to fix that before the weekend.

I just got my ducati monster seat in the mail so I will be fitting that on soon. Just waiting on a bid for a Clarke 130en Mig/Flux wire welder! I'll be modding the subframe a bit to fit the monster seat. Just a day left on the bid so wish me luck!

Next up I'll be ordering an f4i shock to raise the rear end. I won't be able to do much work till I get welder and whatever else I need. I'll also be looking into making fork covers as well!

Let's go!
