89 cbr600 Baby Fighter! *Stage 2 Initiated!*

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

greasy, Thank you!

As much as I love the older CB's, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the more modern Honda sport bikes. They're loads of fun and they're easy to maintain. My old cb450 was a great platform to learn the basics of motorcycles and I appreciate having the chance to work on it.

I suggest if you want to turn your cbr into a fighter, that you sell the fairings separately. The hurricane fairings are VERY rare and you'll probably get more selling those separately than with the bike. Just something for you to consider.

+1 for having a girl that rides! That's a ninja, right? The paint look great as well!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Just ordered some new fork seals and I will be rebuilding the forks once they come in. Which oil do you guys recommend? I remember Joe saying a heavier one but what exactly?

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I'm pretty sure he mixed 2 different weights - 10 and 15 in a 3:1 ratio? Gonna wait for him to confirm, but is was something like that

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

yes sir i rock 15 w and 10 w... run a blend and love it... on the sport bike since i cut and chopped it to lower the front end 2 inches i wanted it a bit stiffer so i went 25% 10w and 75% 15w. usually i am around 50/50 on the other bikes and love it, but this one i have cut the damper spacer and added a spacer to the damper i lost a bit of spring in the forks so a touch stiffer will help out.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

So is 10w or 15 stiffer? I'll go with a blend but I have to understand how it all works lol. Also, can I just use regular car oil? I remember using that for my cafe racer.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

15w is stiffer. My forks were loaded with 10w originally but I put in a 2:1 of 10w/15w.

Don't know about using motor oil..... can't be a good thing though

Some people use automatic transmission fluid, but ya I wouldnt use motor oil.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

personally i would never go higher than 15 thicker fork oil can also have the rev affect and not only stiffen up your front end but also slow down the rebound, can get hairy at high speeds. i am a fan of a blend 10w and 15w depending on what i am riding and how heavy the rider is i will adapt the mixture to meet that. NO i would not use motor oil or trans fluid, fork oil is cheap man, get the right stuff

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Thank you for clarifying this fellas! I'll swing by my local motorcycle shop to pick some up. The fork seals came in the mail yesterday so I'll be doing work on it soon.

Giggity.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Quick question fellas:

I want to run fatter tires on my bike so I will be swapping either cbr600 F2 or F3 front and rear rims. I understand I'll need an F2/F3 swinger, but will I need to swap forks/trees as well? If I have to swap my front end then I'm just going to do a cbr600rr front end conversion.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

You will not need to swap forks for the rim swap, bearings and axels are the same. I am not sure on the brake disk and caliper mounts though, but would susspect they are. If they are not just put the old disk on the new rim and use the old calipers.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

the fatter tires you have to worry about chain clearance as well... is there going to be enough room there and not have the chain hit the rubber, you may have to machine some adapter plates

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

thanks twisted, I'll look into that!

For the rear, I'm probably going to do a swinger swap as well so I won't have to worry about the chain hitting the tire.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Its not the swingarm thats your issue, its the sprockets. Wider wheel/swingarm/axle means your drive spockets will be out of line. Front sprokcket needs shimmed out to be in line with the rear sprocket.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

While surfing the other day I saw sombody selling offset sprockets in different sizes from 15 to 18 tooth.(?) Do some searching and they will pop up.
