Captain Meatarm

looking good so far. I have 350 ( in far worse condition) that i hope to get to in the next few years.

Looks good. The grill adds a bit of survival bike to the whole thing. I personally think that survival bike and cafe should be melded together more often.

I like those levers and perches, where did you get them??
They are from Dime City. I want to say they were not too expensive. I am pretty happy with them.

So I went for my first long ride today. I had only been taking small 5-10 mile excursions thus far. About 25 miles into my ride, as I was coasting to a stop at a light, I realized I could hear my starter spinning. WTF?!- I could not hear it before over the engine rumble. It must have been cranking for awhile. Moments after coming to a stop, my battery was dead. -sucks- I don't have a kickstart, because it is stripped inside, and I haven't gotten to that yet. I walked it a few blocks to a high school parking lot. The lot was sloped, so I was able to get a decent push start going. (After many tries) But as you would expect, as soon a I got into some traffic, I died again. So, I called my Pops, luckily he lives about 15 minutes from where I was stranded. Got my van out there and brought her home. It seems like the starter button was grounding out on the bars. I took the controls apart and reassembled it, charged the battery back up, and it was fine. Luckily my starter didn't burn out on me. Any suggestions beyond that?

What do you guys do with the long cables after switching from stock bars? ??? Shorten them yourself? Get new custom ones? Have them shortened somewhere?
-chris

Pretty do-able to shorten them yourself. You can get kits from Flanders with new ends, or if you're feeling spunky you can make your own barrels from steel rod like I did. You'll need a torch for the soldering. There are some howtos on the web, but basically you thread the cable through the cable end, then fray it out. The idea is to have the solder act as a wedge rather than relying on the bond itself. I used hard silver solder, 60/40 may be a little soft.

Cutting the cable is interesting, I used a cutoff wheel but you can also use a cold chisel, or maybe you're lucky and you actually have a cable cutter. Don't even try using wire cutters, you'll mangle the cable and your cutters. The jacket is easy with a cutoff tool, hacksaw may work with some cleanup afterword.

A few little things to show. The past few weeks, I've been trying to do some little thing, that:
1.Don't cost much, because money is tight at the moment.
2.Doesn't take the bike out of running order for too long. The cold weather is coming fast, so I wanna ride while I can.

I put a horn button into one of the empty riser bar holes. This may evolve in the future, if I decide on a more proper dash.

From this angle, you can get a better view of the speedo mount I have been working on. Ever since dropping the headlight, the height of the speedo has been driving me nuts. This allows me to sleep at night.

This is a mockup for placement of the short front fender I have been playing with. I ran with no fender for awhile. Just the brace. The puddles were kicking my ass though. I don't like fenders much, so I am trying to find a happy medium here.

Dude that fender is sweet ! im not much on fenders when it comes to my cafe build and have been trying to find a way to make it look cooler then stock and just shortend. and your fender just gave me more food for thought !

All that shit is fucking dope! I'm digging the independent/out of the box thinking... Maybe its because you name is Graham...? Mine is too.

you should paint a strip of metal black and weld it in under the holes on your fender. Then you will have the cool look and the water wont fly through.

I have been going back and forth on that idea for two days. In fact I mocked it up that way a couple times. It certainly is more practical as a fender with the metal underneath. But when I take it away, it looks so sweet being able to see light through the perf-holes.

If someone would have told me that they drilled big holes in their fender and put in wire mesh, I would of thought that it was the stupidest thing ever.

Looking at your pics - it looks great. Leave them open.
