Cool! I'll be tuning in. ;D

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

Didn't do any work today, but i might as well post the recipe...

do it in whatever quantity that you want, but a little goes a long way with this stuff.

I played around with this a bit and this is what im liking best for my home made polish.

4/8 Mineral Spirits (aka paint thinner)

3/8 White Rouge (a nice 1 pound bar is like 10 dollars or so...) CRUSHED to a powder (or close)

1/8 Brown (or sometimes green) Rouge CRUSHED to a powder (or close)

This bit is HIGHLY flammable, so play close attention.

Take these materials OUTSIDE, with a bucket of water, or better yet a fire extinguisher at hand. Place everything in a nice sized pot that you dont mind ruining, and bring it all to a boil. keep stirring it until it is a nice smooth consistency. If this is being used on alloy that is still being worked to a polish, i dont use wax in this formula. If this is being used on parts that are already polished that you want to be sealed and keep safe from the elements, throw in a nice chunk of caranuba wax (or some good car wax... i like the pure wax since you know exactly whats in it). You dont need a lot... about as much as the amount of brown rouge. Let it all get to a nice smooth consistency and then let it cool. Keep stored in a good container, and then use as any old polish. Wipe on, rub it to a high polish, watch the rag turn black (as it should, just like a buffing wheel does), and have at it. buff it on using good pressure and some smooth circles, then wipe it all off.

its cheap, and its hella good.

Cheers All ;D

Ill get some before and after pics of random junk ive polished with it. Works on steel, alloy, chrome, whatever. cuts through rust and grime and is really amazing.... just like autosol- yet you can make 100 times more for the same cost ;)

Wow, wouldve never thought Mineral spirits.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

been ages since i updated this thread (why do i always take these one month breaks?!)... got the rear brake polished up as best as i could... doesnt look as great as id like it too but ill leave it be... the number of corners makes it extremely difficult to get a good even polish throughout. pictures will be up by saturday... i will be ordering some new fork tubes tomorrow when cycle x change gets them in the correct size i need. havent rebuilt the caliper yet so that will be a project for saturday.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

Nice bike an kudos to you and the other kid on here. I'm 18 but I've been working on cars since I was around 13. I'll be getting my first bike, a basket case CL360, in a week (at least it's free). I wish I was still in high school and had all the time you two have. Looking back, I wasted a TON of time twiddling my thumbs with all those games. Now that I'm in college taking 17 credits and working two jobs part time I barely have time sleep let alone work on a bike or car. Use the time wisely because it will disappear before you know it.

Keep up the good work,
Mike

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

Here are the pics of my rear brake hub. not happy with the way it turned out so i think ill redo it if i find the time.

Finals tomorrow so im lucky that i found a spot of time to post this up

casting marks left in... i think ill take them out next time.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

a little update...

the cb450 forks i had turned out to be from the early model with the million bushings and circlips on the fork legs... one of them was thrashed on the inside so i needed new tubes. after looking for a replacement, it seems forks by frank is the only guy, but they cost $259. I may just get a set of forks off a different bike in better condition... its just damn hard to find the correct forks without the rust. its a shame too after all the time i spent polishing one of the legs xP.

supposedly hydraulic shops can repair fork tubes... ill have to look into this.

a bit on whats left to do...

Work out suspension (forks and rear shocks, thinking Mono conversion... will have to think about it). fork brace will be made from alloy stock... planning on progressive springs and racetech valve emulators.

Pull engine and bead blast frame, then grind off mounts and other things, brace etc and paint.

Engine- Nearly done with polishing all the sidecovers... only have rightside left. The entire bottom end will be polished, so wish me luck. will be bored 1.5mm over. Will be getting the crank, rods, and pistons balanced. Fins will be black on the inside with polished edges, head will all be polished. Would love to do a cam oiler system but its way too pricy. Electronic ignition from boretech, dyna coils, megacycle 123-20 cam, new valves and guides (stock sizes). will have the head flowed and the intakes opened for 32mm carbs. heavy duty valve springs, new KA cam tensioner... and im probably forgetting a thing or two. should come out to about 1300 dollars for the engine goodies without the machine shop work. OH... barnett clutch and new springs too.
I had decided that i might as well build the motor when im in there. Also one spark plug will need to be helicoiled seeing as how the PO stripped the threads =/

Tank will probably be made by myself out of fiberglass if i can figure out which resin to use... tail piece will definitly be home made as well.

Rims and spokes will be from buchanan... WM3 excel shouldered rims front and back.

Clipons already purchased from roccitycafe... EXCELLENT product and service, highly reccomend.

exhaust will be a 2-1 welded up from 1.5" tubing.... might have to check that size again... not 100%

im probably missing some stuff, but either way its a long way off ;)

paint scheme will be black and white, and although it took some personal convincing, im avoiding a complete checkered paintjob, to spare you all the played out ness. will probably be some pinstriping.

all work, as you guys can tell, is being done by myself. only stuff that isnt going to be is the stuff that i simply dont have the machinery for, such as the engine balance and the headwork (well, i guess i could do the headwork, but the guys at caferacer.net scared me off from it).

and the best part of it is that this is all being done on my own money... and i only get 7.50 an hour at the local bike shop xP. I had been getting an extra 300 monthly on top of that by working as a superintendent, but it got to the point where i couldnt keep up with schoolwork. And to those who are wondering... I put the majority of the money i make into savings... unlike most teens, i have my future in mind ;)

In other news.... passed my roadtests with perfect scores. supposedly im the first 16 year old in 6 years to have both my motorcycle and car license in nyc. Only thing is that with my junior license i still have to sneak around when i decide to ride or drive... i am restricted from driving in nyc, but upstate and in long island i can drive wherever i want.

Sorry for the long post... had a lot on my mind today and ive been bummed out since i havent gotten a chance to work on my bike lately due to finals and trying to get in some days of snowboarding before the seasons over. ;)

Sounds like you need to get your priorities in order... Bike first, than everything else... ;) ;) ;)

Trying ot brighten the pics I snapped for you last night, my friggin flash is dead apparently and the storage is really dim. Regardless I haven't forgotten your need for servicable forks. Standby....

Also, for a safer alternative to mineral spirits which as noted above are flamable. You can create the same paste matrix using any Citrus or Pine based home cleaning fluid and it won't be toxic. I like non-toxic....

hmmm... sounds good.

sounds great! welcome to the forum! Thanks for the inspiration. Good luck with the build... post a link here and ill be sure to follow it.

Good news finally....

I seem to have a set of working forks! also i realized that the two calipers i have are different sizes... one is probably off of a cb550, while the other is larger, off of something like a cb750 or cb450. Ill just be using the larger caliper along with a custom mount made out of alloy stock that doesnt swing like the stock one and is a bit shorter. All that means extra stiff brakes... woohoo!

the pistons came out without a hitch... grease pump made it easy as pie. Luckily they were in MINT condition... that saved me some serious dough. cylinders could use a good cleanup and maybe a hone... I think ill just clean of all the old grease and rebuild them.

Pictures to come!

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

CB450 and 550 calipers are just about the same. (as is 350 four and twin, CB360, etc)
CB750 is substantially larger in height but uses same pads, so, no advantage there. ::)
Not sure what you mean about a custom mount that doesn't pivot?
You'll either have a brake that drags all the time or will be flexing bracket to make both pads contact rotor, neither situation is good
If your using late model sliding caliper its a different story.
Post a picture

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

I wish I could find the pic now but I saw one of a kat running two (looked like) 450 calipers on each side of the fork, with a heavily drilled disc. Looked kinda badass actually, certainly purposeful. Another way might be to build a plate that would act as/with the axle spacer on the brake side, use one of the upper bolts to anchor up top and sling the caliper on like that. accommodations can be made for the solid calipers but sliders WOULD be easier to deal with.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

i hadnt thought about the whole adjustment bit... my thinking was that if i adjust it properly from the start, it shouldnt have to be adjusted again.

The calipers are about the same height... the actual piston size is different between them... as well as the bolt spacing. Come to think of it, the pads are the same size between them.... only the body size is different

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

got myself a set of levers! Soon as i get my forks ill have my front end ready to go...

ill grab some pics... levers are off of a 2007 ninja 250. clutch was in mint condition, the brake lever nob was a bit grinded down (bike was dropped) but with some filing to smooth it out and filing on the clutch lever to make them look equal, they should look perfect. perfect working condition as well, and CHEAP... 45 dollars total for both including shipping.

just ordered a set of brake pads and a caliper rebuild kit for my caliper.... will get that polished later this week.

i love it when stuff works out! ;D

a couple of things im noticing as this project progresses- My pile of finished parts ready to install increases, the amount of physical work i have to do decreases as most stuff i need now has to be purchased, and best of all, i realise more and more how much weight i chopped off of this bike when i consider how many parts i have sold... and continue to sell.

This thing is going to be a badass ride when done... should be sub 300 pounds.

I need to save up about a grand for my engine work... thats the biggest cost of my entire project. besides that, rims will be the next big cost coming up to around 500 dollars with shouldered rims and spokes from buchanan.

Welding will hopefully be done on the swingarm later this month.. will have minor bracing as well as...

drumroll please....

A monoshock mount! much thinking went into this, and i finally decided im going to regret not having done a mono conversion if i stick with the dual shocks.

Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)

I don't recognise the wider caliper, it's probably correct for 450 early model.
The lower one is from 500 twin or cb350/360/400, etc
It's definitely not CB750.
Pivot pin is upside down in lower pivot arm.
What is the bore size of master cyl? (it should be on back next to clamp)
