Re: CB350 Built by a teen (Picture Heavy!!)
a little update...
the cb450 forks i had turned out to be from the early model with the million bushings and circlips on the fork legs... one of them was thrashed on the inside so i needed new tubes. after looking for a replacement, it seems forks by frank is the only guy, but they cost $259. I may just get a set of forks off a different bike in better condition... its just damn hard to find the correct forks without the rust. its a shame too after all the time i spent polishing one of the legs xP.
supposedly hydraulic shops can repair fork tubes... ill have to look into this.
a bit on whats left to do...
Work out suspension (forks and rear shocks, thinking Mono conversion... will have to think about it). fork brace will be made from alloy stock... planning on progressive springs and racetech valve emulators.
Pull engine and bead blast frame, then grind off mounts and other things, brace etc and paint.
Engine- Nearly done with polishing all the sidecovers... only have rightside left. The entire bottom end will be polished, so wish me luck. will be bored 1.5mm over. Will be getting the crank, rods, and pistons balanced. Fins will be black on the inside with polished edges, head will all be polished. Would love to do a cam oiler system but its way too pricy. Electronic ignition from boretech, dyna coils, megacycle 123-20 cam, new valves and guides (stock sizes). will have the head flowed and the intakes opened for 32mm carbs. heavy duty valve springs, new KA cam tensioner... and im probably forgetting a thing or two. should come out to about 1300 dollars for the engine goodies without the machine shop work. OH... barnett clutch and new springs too.
I had decided that i might as well build the motor when im in there. Also one spark plug will need to be helicoiled seeing as how the PO stripped the threads =/
Tank will probably be made by myself out of fiberglass if i can figure out which resin to use... tail piece will definitly be home made as well.
Rims and spokes will be from buchanan... WM3 excel shouldered rims front and back.
Clipons already purchased from roccitycafe... EXCELLENT product and service, highly reccomend.
exhaust will be a 2-1 welded up from 1.5" tubing.... might have to check that size again... not 100%
im probably missing some stuff, but either way its a long way off
paint scheme will be black and white, and although it took some personal convincing, im avoiding a complete checkered paintjob, to spare you all the played out ness. will probably be some pinstriping.
all work, as you guys can tell, is being done by myself. only stuff that isnt going to be is the stuff that i simply dont have the machinery for, such as the engine balance and the headwork (well, i guess i could do the headwork, but the guys at caferacer.net scared me off from it).
and the best part of it is that this is all being done on my own money... and i only get 7.50 an hour at the local bike shop xP. I had been getting an extra 300 monthly on top of that by working as a superintendent, but it got to the point where i couldnt keep up with schoolwork. And to those who are wondering... I put the majority of the money i make into savings... unlike most teens, i have my future in mind
In other news.... passed my roadtests with perfect scores. supposedly im the first 16 year old in 6 years to have both my motorcycle and car license in nyc. Only thing is that with my junior license i still have to sneak around when i decide to ride or drive... i am restricted from driving in nyc, but upstate and in long island i can drive wherever i want.
Sorry for the long post... had a lot on my mind today and ive been bummed out since i havent gotten a chance to work on my bike lately due to finals and trying to get in some days of snowboarding before the seasons over.
