CB350 project from Australia

Looking sharp!
Have you had it running much? Wondering if you're going to have much to do tuning wise since changing the air intake & exhaust.
Have you got a fender or fork brace to fit up front?

Nice! not to nit pick but down the road I would consider replacing the front tire with 1 size smaller in front.
It would be a handling upgrade, also I think it would look better with a 1 size smaller front. Right now both are the same but due to the wider rear rim the front is actually a little bigger looking!
Ah it actually is a smaller front wheel size on the bike than the rear, I think the photo just makes it look that way. I didn't want to run the same sized tryes front and back cause I thought it looks a little weird!

I've only just really had it idling and ridden it around the back yard a bit. Because of the size of the aftermarket pipes I need to modify the gear selector because I can't select down at all as it hits the pipe. Yeah I'm not too sure how I'm going to go tuning the carbs, as they're aftermarket units, but ill set the timing in myself properly in the next few weeks. I'm unsure about the front guard, I wanted some kind of fork brace but I'm really not sure how to run with it. I night cut the standard front guard down and reuse it...

Hi RBass, enjoying the project. I'm in Melbourne also and starting a CB350 build. Looking forward to more updates.

Oh nice! It's been fun but it's also been a headache at the same time. What plans do you have for yours?

I havnt really touched the Honda much this year, been a bit pre occupied with other things. Though the club rego rules are changing at the end of this month, which means I'll need to get a full rwc for it which concerns me a bit...

Nice project.

Got any idea's who your going to get the RWC through, i'm going to be in the same boat.

No idea at all, only found out about a week ago that they were changing the laws. I really don't know what I'm going to do. I mean the whole thing has been fully rebuilt, but it'll be too loud and no guards ect...

Yeah it's pretty annoying given the stage your at.

I'm even reconsidering running club plates at all, due to the fact I'll have to run the ones that point out the bike is modified, it'll just be an extra reason to get pulled over, nobody got time for that.

I've been trying to read up on all the ADR's
This .pdf seemed to cover a bit of it.

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP8_Section_LL_Motor-Cycles_and_3WheelVehicles_01Jan2011_v2.pdf

Seems like it's just an extra cost to add to the build.

So I've finally done something on the bike this year, have done a bit of wiring, mounted the rear indicators and its just about ready to go. I'm having a few issues with the brake lights though, when I touch the rear brake it blows the main fuse and the front brake switch does nothing at all, so I'm a bit unsure about what's going on there. But it's at a point now where I can send it away and get the timing set and the carbs tuned

As I read the rules, you need indicators, mudguards and two mirrors.

Your rear cowl is too close to the rear tyre and will probably fail a Roadworthy inspection and the mufflers may be an issue depending on the mechanic that does it. If it's 75 on, it is supposed to have stock mufflers - not sure how many of those are available ..

Seat has to be less than 500mm long unless you have passenger footpegs

Ive got a guard for it and it has indicators on the back already, they're just black so a bit hard to see in the photos. It's a 73 model so it should be alright. It hasn't got passenger footpegs but the seat is around the same length as the standard one. As far as I know in November, Vic roads changed the rules in relation to the rear guard. I'll speak with the guy that's going to do the rwc and see what it needs and deal with it as the issues arise

it looks like the seat pan area is too low unless you have it magically scooped out underneath, terribly bad suspension (stiff as fuck) or travel limiters on the shocks
this issue with the tire hitting seat etc is the nnumber one fail of home builds next to pods and short pipes, dropping the front lower etc etc ad nausium you have hit at least 3 major fails ...strike one ....strike two ....strike 3 !!

Correct XB, but in this case the OP has to comply with Aussie rules for modified bikes which dictate fenders at both ends and mirrors (2) and front and rear indicators etc. Rules appear to say that in all states except banana bending QLD, the seat can be replaced with a solo seat but it must be smaller than a certain size (presumably to stop riders from taking passengers when the passenger pegs have been removed.

The rules interestingly say that very high bars are illegal but no mention of how low they can go. Maybe that's room for a tighter set of rules next time around.

So the OP has to make his bike comply with appropriate parts of those new regulations. Fortunately, in the US we have slightly less rules, but that day will come I'm sure. At the moment we are largely protected by ignorance of DOT and state by state rules, but there are lots of rules that we get away with breaking for now at least.

What screws things up is people doing stupid stuff and then politicians decide to enact laws so they "look tough on crime". Same $h^t, different country. In Australia they have a Roadworthy (RWC) inspection similar in some ways to the UK's MOT and like some states in the US and that's where the OP is trying to walk softly in the minefield.

You know, if you like it you can just say it's nice, if you dont like it then just don't say anything at all. No need to be a dick about it. Whatever I have to do for rwc will be getting done, im currently getting advice as to what it needs to comply, as it will, so no need to worry. As for the guards and mirrors I have them just havnt put them on yet. I agree with the comment above, its a shame that some people really do ruin it for others, for that reason you nearly can't do anything here in Australia anymore

i wasn't being a dick i was just stating the facts, true i don't like bikes that are poorly built in the performance dept and that was my point you really have a lot less machine than a stocker

Saying that I've failed and I've got 3 strikes doesn't sound a bit patronising? My bike hasn't been poorly built, it's brand new from the ground up. true maybe I'd do things differently next time as this is my first ever build of a bike, but it's been great fun, I'm proud of what I've achieved and had a heap of fun along the way. Once again, if you don't like it, then don't comment

Could be worse, could live in QLD.... Are things as bad up there as I read? Seems that just riding a bike is close to illegal up there as a result of bike gangs and an over reacting government. VIC has always been more mellow I think. Anywhere that sells VB can't be all bad now can it?

Hey, while I'm thinking about it, is Red Back beer still available. I haven't seen it on my last few trips home.

when you ride poorly built outright dangerosly modified bikes like yours, but complain about draconian regs ? you are part of the problem dood ,people getting hurt on shit that is a hazard on the rode is why the laws get scribbled out, aint it ?

Nahh Victoria isn't so bad, they are generally pretty good for bikes, like having rec rego for dirt bikes so motocross bikes can get some sort of rego to be allowed to ride in the bush, and recently changed laws regarding the rear fender set ups. So they are generally pretty good around here. Nah everyone love a beer don't worry about that! I haven't seen any redback for sale for quite some time, but who knows, it could be out there. The bottle shops are flooded with so many different beers these days, it's a tough world to live in!
