CB360 box build - Project Junebug

Re: It came in a box... First build 1974 CB360t

Looking good!
Yea I believe question marks on parts would concern me also. I'm curious if my points cover looks like that on the back side. I'm gonna have to check when I get to the house.
I like your plans for the rear. Gonna be sweet!

Points plate is upside down, contact points should be at top
backing plate is original

Yea, haha I figured that out pretty quickly when I realized the wires weren't clearing the cover either.

Sometimes I wish I had the patience to post pictures at the END of the day :)

Still had a little trouble with clearance of the wiring, and I've heard about stuff grounding out on the points plate, so I took a lot of time making sure everything fit tidily. I now also have it RIGHT SIDE UP and in the correct position. It's amazing what you can infer from shop manuals if you look at them.

Yep, points wires grounding on cover is common problem, particularly if you don't have gasket in position.
I tape the inside of cover as well as making sure the wire connectors on points are orientated properly

I've been noticing little things missing now that things are coming together a little more and I've had more time. Some brake linkages, drive chain adjuster assemblies, and little things here and there.
Fortunately I live within a mile of a Fastenal, and eBay does in fact exist. :D

I should have wheels on in the next few days...

Thanks, it's really a happy accident. I got it for $35 when I bought the bike. The guy had a whole shelf of tanks.
I think (and hope) it will look great on the finished bike

Made a friend down the street, saw him out in front of an apartment complex with this RD400.

I rode my bike (read: bicycle) back after I got home to see if I could help out and to get a closer look at it. It's pretty awesome. Its not my style aesthetically, but he's put a lot of time and effort into the engine. Apparently it has very nice internal components.

Anyways, it turns out he has a spare set of flat slide mikunis he is willing to part with really cheap. The 28mm variety. Anybody know how the 360 would handle these? Would they work?

Thanks for any help, I'll do some research as well, just wanted to see what y'all thought. Most of the mikunis jetted for 360s on eBay seem to be vm32

Re: It came in a box... First build 1974 CB360t

VM28s flatslides? Nice kit for a 360. Probably the best carbs you can get.

You will be navigating uncharted waters, though. I don't know what settings you'll want to use, but I'm sure a few of us here can provide advice on dialing them in.

Awesome, I'm gonna go for it then. They're dirty and in pretty rough looking shape, but perfectly functional. This guy is super helpful. I think he even said he would clean and reassemble them for me, so I'm pretty stoked.

I also just bought a 520 drive chain conversion kit from Finnegan (thank you, sir)

Oh, did I mention he said I could take it for a ride tomorrow? Heheheh

Playing around, trying to get a feel for the looks.
I think I'm going to try to drop the rear of the tank just a tiny bit. An inch at the most.

I'm going to go get the rims trued today at Skinner's (That's ONE thing I don't feel like doing myself) and buying some tubes. Should have tires on in the next couple days then we can really see what it looks like.
I'm gonna have to make my stand a little taller....

Next up is painting the swingarm, replacing fork seals, and a LOT of aesthetic choices before I move ahead. I'm considering painting the cases and head black, and polishing fins.

I need blinkers, tail light, etc.

Again... probably just going to get it running ASAP with stock hardware and do a lot of this stuff down the road. I'm getting impatient.

For rim truing I was quoted ~$140... So I guess I'll be learning to true rims myself. I read somewhere (PJ I think) about putting swingarm in a vice and setting it up that way...

YouTube here I come

Will do, thanks man... I'm sure I'll be missing something else

Re: It came in a box... First build 1974 CB360t

So, Finnegan shipped me the 520 conversion chain and sprockets, but someone stole the box off of my front porch.
Apparently this has been happening a lot, and boxes about the size/weight of a nice textbook are the most at risk because people can go sell them at the book store no problem. Downside of a college town, I guess.

I am beyond pissed.

On another note, my trued and rubbered-up wheels should be ready to be picked up tomorrow morning.

Re: It came in a box... First build 1974 CB360t

Somewhere in there there's a joke about selling textbooks for drug money and "higher education"

Dude that sucks. I'm sure the APD said there was nothing they could do. Cant stand a frigging thief!!
Hope it can be replaced easily or better yet found.
