CJ250T - CeeJay - First time builder...(Nearly ready for rego!)

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

wait i am a bit confused??? your coater will have to degrease the swing arm, the strip it, then blast it... if that is not his process find a new coater... we have a huge chemical tanks one to degrease, then one to chem strip paint/powder... if he does not do something along these lines the coating will be about as good as the paint work he wiped off

OH THE HORROR...

I spoke with White Knight paints yesterday to just confirm the baking process for the paint I'm using, and to my disgust the technical support tells me that I am using the wrong paint for the application... Basically it is designed to harden when it is heated from the INSIDE. So no real baking process just turn your barbeque on and it will cure it...

SO ALL MY PAINTING WAS A WASTE OF TIME! GAHHHHHH

I've been and visited a powdercoater and have started sorting out getting that ball rolling. Speaking to the PC fellow and he was a bit worried about the paint on the swingarm and that it had grease all over it, so he got a rag with thinners on it and then proceeded to wipe the paint straight off... yes thats right my paint was seriously just wiping off.

Now all my parts will be getting a healthy coat of powder.

On a positive note I did get a refund on 4 empty cans of paint. It was funny, the girl was like 'we can't refund you, the cans are empty.' I was like 'what do you want me to do put the paint back in?' hahaha

end rant. All part of the process I guess...

Your paint would have cured OK if you had put the parts in the oven - your technical support guys are reading from their "textbook"....

And of course the paint will wipe off with thinners....it hasn't been cured :D

And I can't believe you got a refund on a bunch of empty cans....that's GOLD ;D

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

what hillsy said - it was fine with the paint. the sales guys don't necessarily know jackshit given they've probably barely touched a can of paint in their lives

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Oh well, its done now. I took my hubs to get the bearings out and in the time from when I left to when I got them out, I already had some fresh scratches. The paint just isnt the same as VHT or similar. It is not a durable finish at all.

I think I will be comfortable with my PC.

Oh and don't worry the PC only gave it a wipe to check it for 'gummyness.' He has a full process in place.

I'm thinking from now on, paint, say its not correct paint and then return the empty can... free paint! hahaha not really, but seriously... ahhahaha

They bake before powder. Heard good reviews...

Make sure you get them to mask off your bearing areas and all other places where you don't want powder. I made that mistake a few years back with a pair of wheels off a disc brake bike - took me a couple of days to scrape the PC off the disc carrier areas and out of the bearing holes

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

yes sir just looking at their web page they are a ligit deal... will be nice, as said just be sure they do the masking work you need them to cause threading out holes and grinding race areas sucks

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

Anyone know the dimensions for steering head tapered bearings?

I bought new wheel bearings from the bearing shop two blocks from my house. about 25bux front and rear. Bargain. They also said they do tapered and that i just need ID and OD and they should be able to supply. Pyramid Parts are taking forever to send...

Also, do I need a spacer on the bottom? and my seal was shagged. Replacement?

Btw, tank is almost ready for paint. Spent some time today blowing holes in it with a stick... won't do that again... instead got my mates dad to oxy weld the holes up. Lovely. bog sand bog sand... whilst doing the filler primer coat we realised there was a pin hole down where rust usually appears... grr. More oxy to go. At least it looks like a tank now. WOO

Everything is coming along nicely now... photos to follow tomorrow...

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

So I realised yesterday that I had forgotten to remove my cush drive bushes from my rear hub.

Off to the powdercoater to collect today. Started pondering the process for removal. No luck with web searches which surprised me, until I started looking for blind bearing pullers... and then this picture showed up with a bearing and a dynabolt (concrete fastener) attached to it... BINGO! 12mm dynabolt should tighten up in the bush and then just a matter of attaching it to a lever and fingers crossed...

I'll let you all know how this goes. It may end up being a useful way to get all sorts of parts off these old hondas!

:p

Re: CJ250T - Aussie Cafe Racer - First time Builder...

So the dynabolt idea probably would have worked with a large bit of square tube but i didnt have one off hand so went back to the drawing board...

Ended up using a 6mm drill bit and drilled a few holes around the rubber which because the drill bit was large enough it actually drilled out the metal outer as well.

So cush drives are out, and hub is back at the powdercoaters.

Got delivery of some parts yesterday, ignition key, vinyl decals for the tank details, and a headlight, complete with dodgy packaging and a smashed lense. Yay for me and my luck.

Good news today, my sprockets and caliper seal have turned up so at least something has worked out for me this week...

Re: CJ250T - CeeJay - First time builder...(deus ex machina build off 27th Nov)

On my way to Canberra I dropped in to see the fellas at Deus and payed my 25bux and joined myself up for the build.

It's locked in now! Finger out...

Top blokes at the shop too. Anyone based around Sydney, its definately worth a look. (and plus good for a looksey at how to do the rearset setup too :p)

Re: CJ250T - CeeJay - First time builder...(deus ex machina build off 27th Nov)

Good luck. I'm thinking you'll do alright if you can finish in time. I wish I could help. Damn the geography.

Lacing the wheels was an interesting process... If you ever end up with your spokes in this orientation, you have chosen the wrong way to go about it... Ask me how I know...

IMG_2835 by belch_brother, on Flickr

So after taking about an hour and a half to do the first rim, second one took about halfa. Once you do it once, it is real easy second time.

Re: CJ250T - CeeJay - First time builder...(deus ex machina build off 27th Nov)

I'll start. That shit looks great!

Re: CJ250T - CeeJay - First time builder...(deus ex machina build off 27th Nov)

ahh man that looks great! I really really really hope that your rotors are not completely coated... i see that your bearing areas are masked, so that is good but, what about where the swing arm bushings go? did they coat both sides of your brake calipers

cool choice of powder looks alot like the original color we did for boom
