Cool cheep speedo/tach

Looks pretty cool, like to see how it performs. It's cheap enough to hack up a spare headlamp bucket and bondo it in for that sleek headlamp/speedo combo which makes me drool.

Yeah I did some research. A few people said strip about 3 inchs of wire and then wrap that plus another 3 not striped around the coil wire. They all said clutch side not stator side also.

Just thought I would keep this thread alive in hopes someone wants to post a in depth review of this... :)

sxecafe, i'm in simi valley. i'd love to see how the gauges work in person. let me know when you get it working. i'd love to meet up and check it out. i'm interested in purchasing for my cb750.
Also how big is it? will it mount into the stock speedo/tach cups?

I have one on order for my 77 KZ650 B1. I will get some pics up of installation and review after some road time. It is scheduled to be here between the 16th and 23rd of August. SLOW shipping but it is coming all the way from china.

Please do...I've got a 77' C1 and would love to change out the gauges. Let us know how it works.

I had a couple ordered and for whatever reason it didn't go thru. I've held off for 'more important' things but will probably nab one or two soon enough. I ordered some other things from DanDan though and if those parts and any indication the speedos should be fine.

Ok my gauge came in today not impressed really. It is entirely plastic, It came with no REAL directions especially on how to mount speed sensor. It has no male wire connectors to wire up and match your wiring with theirs,no brackets for either the speed sensor or gauge. It doesnt even have nuts on the gauge studs for BUCKS sake! Heres pics for your pleasure. I have an email in to the seller to resolve these issues and will post later with resulys from that.

I have mine all mounted I just need to make a bracket to mount the speed sensor this weekend..I think the instructions say 3mm between the sensor and the magnet.. I was going to pull the magnet out of the odd clip mount and just epoxy it to the wheel edge. Once you figure out the cryptic wiring diagram its not to complicated to wire.. i just clipped the molex connector off and wired it all in...but my harness is handmade. I havent fired the bike yet so im not sure if i got the Tach wire setup right.. i wrapped it around a spark plug wire like 5 times. hope that works if not ill wire it into the points wire and see if that makes it work. The one thing that sucks about the gauge is the indicator led's are super bright like to the point of blinding. Im still tryin to come up with a solution for that other then tape..might use a small peice of foggy stick on film over the indicator led row to diffuse some of the light. ill post some pics of it this weekend.

If the magnet pick-up is anything like the Acewell (and I'd imagine it probably is seeing they stole the speedo design) you need to mount the magnet so it runs over the ENDS of the sensor, not in the middle.

The Acewell one has 2 lines on the pick-up (one at each end) that the magnet needs to run over.

Just a heads-up in case you have problems with getting a steady reading.

Good luck with it ;)

nukem1r, I was able to just remove the 2 connectors but keep all the pins on and then I removed all the pins from my factory 9 pin male plug from old gauges and put the new wires where I wanted them and plugs right in now! Question though. No matter what I wire to the red light it stays on continuous? Also I tried to switch between KMH and MPH with no luck, I wonder if there has to be miles on it? I still need to make brackets and hook up speed and rpm and then I'll get some more pics up of it powered up. Also did you wire the backlight to be on all the time? I wonder if you taped off the rest of the gauge and sprayed on some window tint if that would work for light dimm. Hillsy, thanks for heads up!

Wire some small resistors in line with the gauge LED's. 6 bucks a radioshack for a huge multipack. That will dim them nicely. Or use a rheostat.

I havent been able to get the KMH-MPH either...but been working on other things.. as for the backlight its wire on all the time with my headlight switch(the bike is handwired)so i figured i would seperate all the different systems. helps when all the lights are off when trying to kick it over!

The seller said that we need to hold both buttons before its turned on and then continue holding while unit is turned on to switch to MPH. Yes backlight is on all time and gauge display shuts off when headlight is turned off.

From the pictures it looks nice. I'm considering one for my MB5 project. Look forward to hearing how it performs long term. Thanks for posting.

Ok I have about 50 or so miles with this thing. I mounted it with rubber dampers which I would recommend due to the fact its plastic and a high tech instrument. It is accurate acording to my buddies car. I know that some have had issues with the tach read but not I. Its wired to the green wire on the coil and it seems to read just fine! I have the speedo mounted almost flat and is visible no problem. The display is plenty bright at night or daytime. The led idiot lights are a bit bright and maybe inline resistors are the way to go? I rate it this way out of 5: 5 being ideal or easy 1 being less than ideal or hard(everythings relative of course)
*Out of box impression 3. I kind of thought it would come with better directions and more mounting hardware. I also was not aware that was mostly plastic.
*Ease of installation 2. It requires fabrication of brackets for speed sensor and gauge mounting. I just went to scrap yard and got a large piece of 1/4" plate aluminum. $1 per lb Also KOSO's speed sensor mount(under$15) may work.
*Wiring 3. I used factory nine pin and just removed supplied connectors . Wiring diagram is pretty straight forward except brown wire which goes to backlight.
*Read outs 4. I think its easy to read and once setup with wheel size its accurate for speed
*Bang for buck 4. For the money as compared to acewell I think its great for the money.
*Durability Yet to be determined and will update at a later date.

Nice review rocketman. So far, it sounds like a decent unit. Keep us updated on the long term. I'm seriously considering getting one next summer for my MB5.
