GS450 "Sport" - Done!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Small update: there are some small chrome caps on the head cover, and they always seemed to be rusted. When I went to take out the screws to remove them, 2 of the 8 snapped off. Personally, I like the way the motor looks without them ......so here's what I started with:

And here's where I finished for the day. The cover still needs cleaned and painted before I can reinstall it though.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Looking good Rich. Making me jealous already! What direction are you going with this one? Nice little cafe I can steal ideas from? Little tracker like Pete's?

Don't keep it a secret! Paint? fairings? no? You have a garage...why isn't this done yet???? JK JK

Keep it up brother!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Ha! Thanks G. This bike won't be too wild at all though. Just trying to update some parts all around, and keep it stock-ish looking. The paint will end up a different shade of red, and I "might" run the stock 1/4 fairing. Anything else you'll just have to wait and see!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Post a pic of the stock 1/4 fairing. If you decide you don't want it I might.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Interesting take on the valve cover Rich... my stock chrome end caps are all good so I just try to keep 'em nice and shiny, but that doesn't look too bad at all... at least if one of the half moons starts weeping or cracking you'll be able to see real easy ;)

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

I've been keeping my chrome caps clean with scotch-brite. ;D

I was committed to de-chroming this bike from the beginning.
I also just had to replace a leaky half-moon. It's an easy job, after I got all the 31 year old gasket scraped off. That alone took a good 45 minutes.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

I've been lucky with this bike so far....the head cover's gasket came off with onto the cover, and the stator cover didn't even have a gasket (the PO said it needed a new one, and even gave me the replacement).

Still want to replace the oil pan gasket and clutch cover gasket though.......

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Got the head cover painted and installed......the top plate (that the breather tube attaches to) and the mounting bolts will get painted later.

You can see the lack of stator cover gasket.......thanks PO!

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Thanks Bill! Got some more small stuff done today. First off, getting all my PPE on for sandblasting:

I ended up blasting these along with the breather cover and the oil pan (everything got every bolt removed and cleaned multiple times, so no sand leftover.....):

Breather cover painted and installed:

Gasket peeled off from the clutch cover and the oil pan:

And lastly, the GS500 stator (on left) next to the stock GS450 stator (on right). The only difference I can tell so far is the wires are different between the two models - which isn't a big deal at all.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - DOHC'ed goodness

Looking very nice indeed Rich! Love the blasting gear... haha

Dying to get my shed built so I can do some of that fun stuff too...

Re: GS450 "Sport" - the little things are adding up

Thanks Pete! Sorry again to hear about your incident......

Had the new EBC clutch plates soaking in oil all day yesterday:

New 16 tooth front sprocket installed and torqued down (the previous was 15 tooth, and the nut was dangerously loose......):

After installing the new clutch plates, I installed the EBC heavy duty clutch springs (EBC on top, stock on bottom):

Painted & installed the stator cover (with new gasket):

Along with the clutch cover (also new gasket):

Re: GS450 "Sport" - the little things are adding up

I picked up the new front mag wheel yesterday as well. It's the 19" model, and for the time being I'll probably run a single caliper......but it will be ready for the dual disc front end when I get around to it.

Removed the stock bearings:

Installed the new ones:

The best part......unlike spoke wheels, it's already trued up!

Still need to get around to cleaning and painting the front and rear wheels though. Hopefully next week.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - the little things are adding up

Excellent Rich, making great progress! I'm liking the black stator cover too...

What model's the 19" off? An L or T or a different capacity? Straight swap?

Thanks for the sympathies on the incident too, getting the dent taken out of the header at the moment and should have it back in a couple of weeks...

Re: GS450 "Sport" - the little things are adding up

Thanks fellas. I'm really trying to get this project moving along......and it will certainly pick up quickly after the holidays.

Pete, I believe the wheel is from a 78 GS550 (don't know the letter designation though). All the checking I did before indicated it would fit on the stock 450 front end (sans fender and speedo gear.....), but it should bolt right up to any other front end as well. Right? Technically, the front end I have now is from a GR, and it had the "newer" 19" mag.

Re: GS450 "Sport" - the little things are adding up

What the hell happened to ya Pete?
Now I gotta go search...
Snowflake rim does look cool Rich, mine still said to use a tube though... go figure.

Aaaah cheers Rich, cool. If I decide to do something different with my front end down the track it's good to know what will fit... 19" front, 17" rear, and spokes would be rather fitting I think... but definitely not something I'm contemplating at the moment.

No stress HD, I haven't posted anything here on DTT ;)

Just a minor altercation involving a ute changing lanes on me, very minor damage but the bummer is there's a dent in the left header and it's off at Tranzac for two weeks to get repaired :(

Ugh... that sucks but am glad you are all right.
Guess I need to visit GSResorces more often... maybe a 7/11 out of my GS.

Sorry for the hyjack Rich, as you were saying?
