Oh Lord (CB500) - The Leaky Bitch (p. 31)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

The new tank looks great. Glad to hear it's much better than the benjies crap. And please...updates! :)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

Hey guys,
I've been lurking the site a little, but haven't made any progress on the bike. I'm going to have to take down the carbs and give 'em a blast with carb cleaner and compressed air. Looks like I wont be getting a chance to do this until after Thanksgiving.

I've kinda lost my way with the bike, and I need to get myself back on track. When I look at it today, I see a couple of shortcuts I shouldn't have taken that I need to clean up. I also see a couple of mistakes made from just general lack of knowledge that I will be fixing.

The plan is to get it going, and then get it over to Bobby at Motoretta for "finishing." By that, I mean sync the carbs, set the timing, and just generally inspect for safety.

...

What sort of shortcuts? I myself am learning about all of this as I go.

Good to see and update. Hope you'll be riding soon after the holidays.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

No :( Been short on time! Goal is to get her rolling before spring though.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

That's what I said last spring. It's a slippery slope, brother.

Trust me, I've already slipped down the slope. Last spring, the bike was going to be done in time before I got married, in the spring. Then it was going to be done before the summer. Litterally in the week before I got married, it went from a collection of parts in a bunch of boxes to an assembled motorcycle. Then all of the nickle and dime work began. All of the little stuff killed me and is what ultimately slowed me down. I've got it narrowed down though. Carbs, timing, fuel plumbing, clean up the wiring - RIDE!

Perhaps a tech day is in order. Round up a bunch of the fellas and we could probably knock out a bunch of it in an afternoon.

I took the weak way out!

I took the bike to Bobby Costello's shop on Wednesday for tuning, adjustment, and a safety check. When it comes back, I'll do a couple simple things (rear turn signals, foam for that battery tray, mount for the reg/rec) and then I'll put it on the road!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

Ha! Bobby texted me today to let me know he got the bike running and that it "sounds pretty bad ass"

I can't wait to ride this thing, and the weather is looking great for this time of year!!! (it was 74 today!!!)

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

Bobby is bad ass. Glad you are getting it sorted out. Can't wait to get mine pieced back together and meet up with you for a ride.

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Got the tank on (pg. 34)

I rode my bike today!!! Well, just for a short distance. I picked it up from Bobby Costello from Motoretta today, trailered it home, and rode it up the driveway. That wasn't enough, so I drove it up the street and back once. I can't wait to get some more experience on it!

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Rode the thing!!! (pg. 36)

So today I got the bike registered and after fixing up a tag and turn signal bracket, I took it for a ride. It felt really good, and I was so damn happy to be riding my first bike!

But then, about a half mile from home, the bike stalled and it wouldn't start again. It wasn't getting any electrical power, so I am thinking I blew the main fuse.

So the fun part was, I had to push the bike home, 1/2 mile, ALL UP VERY STEEP HILLS!!! It wasn't until the last 25 yards that I was able to get on and coast home. Then I got to push teh bike up my very steep driveway!

So, I am thinking that if it is the main fuse, I am going to cut out that wire and replace it with a modern bladed fuse. What amperage would you guys recomend???

Re: Oh Lord (CB500) - Vintage bike woes, and a fuse question... (pg. 36)

What amperage was the blown fuse?
Do you know what caused it to blow?

Crazy

Aren't all main fuses of old Hondas 15 amp? Even better than a blade fuse, use a small breaker switch, no need to carry spare fuses.
