Re: Project Cheap Racer

well i have ridden her for a few days and this morning i noticed she seemed a lil sluggish. so, instead of taking her to work i pulled around and took her home to take a look during my lunch break. i had a hunch that it might be the spark plugs and i figured that i might be running lean because of my intakes and open exhaust. when i pulled the plugs to my suprise:

all the plugs were covered in black soot. i'm running rich! lil weird to me. i was wondering would it be safe just to run a hotter plug like NGK BP6ES (stock is BP7ES)?

Re: Project Cheap Racer

well i checked my float levels (a lil high but nothing major) and the choke wasnt closed all the way so i fixed that. replaced the plugs with some lil hotter ones (BP6ES). going to run her this afternoon and see how that works out.

ordered up the stuff for my seat. should be here in a few days. went with a simple black pleather and going to have my wife string it up for me (i will probably have to do dishes for the next two weeks but its a sacrafice i willing to make ;) )

Lol sounds worth it to me!

Re: Project Cheap Racer

Have you ever seen this... Its a nice thing to have kicking around when the plugs go.

Re: Project Cheap Racer

Yeah I have that laying around somewhere (I printed it out and put it somewhere?) I know it say not to run a hotter plug but I figured its running rich and I would rather it run a lil rich than lean, so i got the hotter plugs anyway. seem to be working out just fine. more road time will tell I guess but I'm not having any issues yet.

Re: Project Cheap Racer

Well been having fun blastin around town (turn heads all day long). Finally got everything running right (went through two sets of plugs before finding out the exhaust valves werent closing all the way). And now I'm getting the itch to give her a face lift already. I figure might as well since my seat material still hasnt showed up yet. So here's the plan: I'm taking the tank and seat and sanding them down, fix any imperfections and going with a new color scheme. I'm thinkin light metallic blue with white and black accent striping. I'm going to get crackin on it this weekend and will post pics then. Wish me luck guys. ;D

Re: Project Cheap Racer

well i was going to get started on things today but the wind won't stop blowing. damn i need a garage

Re: Project Cheap Racer

Well I got part of my revamp done. I got the tank sanded, prepped, primed and painted. I also took some sanding to the engine fins and painted to float bowls to match the tank (going to paint the tops of the carbs white this weekend). Still working on the tail section and some simple side plates I came up with (will post pics of those when I get home). But here's where its at today:

I think this puts a lil more "racer" in it and definitely more of a cafe racer look.

Re: Project Cheap Racer

I like the 2nd tank scheme will look good with side # plates. cafe/flat tack hybred

Re: Project Cheap Racer

Paint looks great man! Any plans to clear it?

Yeah I'm going to do some black pinstripe along the white stripe and then clear.

I know, I know ;D . I'm looking at getting some clip ons when money allows it ;) .

Re: Project Cheap Racer

I second the removal of those bars.
They look like deformed cafe bars or something....
Not a fan of them but everything else looks good!

Re: Project Cheap Racer

personally i would look at some broom stick drags or maybe even some low rise flat trackers. i think that would look the best IMO... on my old XJ i had both, i would flop from drags to clubmans... they where both very confortable and looked good... here are the only pics i have... yes i know they suck

bike with the drags on it is at least a good pic

Re: Project Cheap Racer (Its getting there)

I want to go with the clip ons just becuz I like the riding position. I honestly like the position the flipped bars give me and I'm guessing to get close to that I would need clip ons. Besides the clip ons would look better. If anyone has some (36mm) sitting around they would like to get rid of for dirt cheap let me know otherwise I have to wait until I get more money.

Re: Project Cheap Racer
