Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

I agree with Twisted, that a side panel that integrates the bottom of the tank to the seat would make it look more complete and the lines would flow. It's a bit more work, but think about it for the next upgrade/change as the bike evolves.

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

I'm going to try to figure out how to just get rid of those tabs. I hate them lol

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

With the shape of the tank itself, I say leave them and use that as an opportunity to tie in the side cover like the tank did in its stock use. I think it will complete the flow much smoother and look like it was suppose to be that way. If you hack it off, I am afraid that the lines of the tank will still leave the feel that something should be there!

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

good point. i'm really debating it because i like the look of the simple side plates and i want to separate things for a minimalist look. i'm really not to keen on the idea of connecting the side plates to the tank cuz that would give the look of one long piece and thats not the look i want at all. i'm going to think about how i can accomplish things

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

I think it just fits though and I would make it all into the seat. I fixed a quick illustration in paint, sorry it is so shitty but paint is all I have to work with on my work PC.

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

Hey man, good to see you are putting a little love into an XJ... they are fun bikes with the right things done to them. I have 3 of them, so I have seen a lot when it comes to these. I will say this, a lot of your problems are going to be coming from running those carbs without the airbox. I figure by now the airbox it long gone, but those hitachi carbs really don't work well without proper tuned length runners. the stock aibox also adds some twists and turns that help the carbs pull air in correctly. You could fix things a bit by adding the stock airbox inlet runners and attaching pods to them. then with proper jetting, and a carb sync, she should run pretty darn well. You might loose a couple HP as opposed to the stock airbox... (funny thing about these bike was that Yamaha engineers did a ton of research on these bikes and the stock setup is almost as much HP and you can get out of them before you start replacing the expensive parts ie, pistons, cams, etc.)

Let me know if you have any questions, it looks like you are in AZ, but if you ever wanted to tune it up and were in the so cal area, I would be happy to help... I have all the little specialty stuff like the YICS tool, carb sync, color tune, etc.

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

here's what i came up with (i to only have paint on my PC). i like it what do you guys think?

@dakine_surf: yeah I know its a lot of work to get these carbs to run right. i did figure out that the most important thing was to get the air to run smoothly into the small hole at the intake of the carb. i was able to do this with some thick filter foam cut to fit (actually a lil larger) into the opening so that there would be a vacuum and the piston would open. i have rejetted and adjusted the float levels and she runs great. i did have a problem with one of the valve seating all the way but that was fixed with some fresh oil and motor flush. she runs good enough for me. dont let her looks fool ya, she's not a track monster (not yet) just a cool street machine to get me to point A to point B in style lol. if i need any help though i will look you up thx

Re: Project Cheap Racer (ver.2)

Less is more. Can't believe how cool the seat looks with the tank.
