Stifler's Mom

Steel plates and friction plates look brand new, I am replacing the buggered pressure plate screws with allen head button head cap screws.

Turns-out the screws weren't buggered, they were just full of aluminum shavings from the side-plate. ::)
Everything else looked new, EXCEPT the clutch basket rotates about 10 deg. on the gear it is riveted to. I assume it is supposed to be rigidly mounted.

Thanks for the interest guys. I assume it would be a good idea, to replace the seal behind the clutch basket while I have it apart, since I have the seal anyway. Anything else I should do while I am here?
I got my head outa my ass, once I had it all apart. Of course there is no seal under the clutch because it backs up to the transmission. :-[

Oh yeah, I also found that the PO had springs installed that measured about .125 short, so he had brass spacers mounted to bring the free length to spec. ::) I bet that did wonders for coil bind. That plus the screwy clutch pack, it is no wonder it isn't working. It is a wonder it worked at all. ::)

I had to modify my gear puller to get behind the gear.

Got it off and changed seals, torque everything back up. Stacked the clutch pack (the right way ;) ) The clutch adjustment was bottomed all the way out. Backed it all the way off. Started screwing the pressure plate on, and this shit happened :

Apparently using the clutch screws to flycut the side-cover causes them to stress-crack, and when you re-torque them the little frazm-of-a-snatch that was the only part holding the treads onto the shoulder of the bolt breaks. Now I have the threaded part in my clutch basket, and if I'm not mistaken the bolts are made from unobtainium. ::)

So I put the side-cover back on to keep out dust, and called it a day.
Now to shop around for clutch screws, if anybody has a source let me know.

At least the old girl let me know something was haywire, by not shifting. That way I could take her all apart and find this. It would have been nasty if that had broken mid turn.

OY! ;)

You wanna hear some freaky shit? These clutch bolts are NOT metric. The shoulder is 3/8" dia. x 5/8" long, and the threads are 10-32unf x 5/8 long. If I can find access to a lathe, I will try drilling and counterboaring the old bolts, and running a 10-32 grade 8 capscrew down the center. ;D

Either that or tap the clutch where they thread in 1/4"-20 and run a standard shoulder bolt. :-\
Someone has to be the guinea-pig, since they won't make new, weird-assed bolts that don't fit anything else.

Just scored a complete clutch assembly on E-Bay.
I dislike replacing old parts with old parts, but these looked in a shit-load better shape than my old parts. ;)

And I wanna ride. ;D

Parts came in the mail today. 8)

We should be back on the road this weekend. ;D

Aw Crap, just saw this.
I was gonna say, I have the spare motor, I'll send ya the bolts outta it if you needed them.
But I see ya don't need them now :p

Glad to hear she'll be back up and runnin soon ;)

Thanks for the offers guys!

I have been remiss in gathering spares. :-[
I will start building up my "junk collection" soon. ;D

She is all together. 8)

Waiting impatiently for 24 hours for the gasket sealer to cure. (finished at 1:45ish this morning).
Everything went together very smoothly, so I am cautiously optimistic. ;D

Push bike out of garage, put on gear, turn on key, turn on petcock, turn on "choke", kick kick kick kick kick kick kick, turn off choke, kick kick kick kick, turn choke back on, kick kick kick kick kick kick kick. Cuss! Turn off petcock, turn off key, take off gear. Make sure battery is connected. Change spark-plugs. (it is a two-stroke) :D

Rode to a friends barbershop, double checked everything, and took a short "scenic route" home. 8)

Ha! I've been in those shoes before. "I swear I'm never going to do anything so stupid again......until next time."

Good to hear you got a scenic ride though. Great scoot, Mike.

Thanks Rich! misery loves company. lol
If that is the worst thing that I forget, I have it made. ;)

Finally got two days of warm sunny weather in a row, so I shined the old girl up for her BOTM pics. She was still grungy and water-spotted from the rain at Barber, and the spray from the semi's on the way home on I-40.

I know what you are going to ask, "Why aren't you smiling after riding than fine machine?". Because it took me a minute and a half to get my right foot off the peg and straightened out. ::) :p
Having a bum right hip is no fun. :(
