The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550- New Electrical

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Check the inside of the ring to see if there are any chamfers...and that they are the same. A lot of rings have a different chamfer for the top ring - should be in the manual too.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Worked the front end today. Got some progress:

My Cam ran out of batteries so the first few pics are cells. Got the front put together to set for welds.

Camera started working again. Yes, I know. I'm a terrible welder:

Then I popped out the old races in the frame and replaced them with the new ones.

Bottom:

Top:

Now, Im not sure that the top is supposed to be sticking out like that. It worried me a bit and proved to be quite troublesome in the near future, as I will explain. I pressed down the bearings on to the stem with the thick washer on the bottom (0.195") because I read on here from post a few years back that it was the proppoer one to go with on the 550s. WRONG!!!! Even after doing an eyeball measurement it turned out that the smaller washer was appropriate so I had to ever ever so gently pop off the bearing, switch the washer and press it back on. PHEW!

Here is a shot before I switched them and I blew it not taking one after but if you cant just imagine a smaller washer under there then... well you should seek counciling...

DSC_1077.jpg

THEN.....I slid the stem in with the bearing on and put the top bearing and the lock nut on and tried to tighten down.... NO. Why? Well the bearing stuck out too high because it's too wide of a tapper? WTF?! Thanksfully I had the tapered set from the GL set up and could use that.

Some shots to compare:

Left = GL/Right = All Balls

All Balls in:

So It finally got sorted out and I have tapered bearings in the front and put the triples on:

FINALLY!!!! Almost 4 months after picking up this front end from a weirdo who tried to sell me the hull of the flat bottom boat he brought it to me in, I have my front end together. What a fuckin' journey!!! Then to reward me for my good deeds, my gf..er I guess fiance now, showed up with a thank you gift in her trunk. Nice new air compressor for her husband-to-be, complete with all the fixin's. I said "Thanks baby, but you've got alot of catchin up to do so keep the gifts coming". ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Sorry. I didn't realize you were talking about fixing the lower triple tree. I should have been more specific. The squash washers go on your upper tree. aka top fork bridge. They go on the bolt that tightens the top triple to the fork tops, and they go in betweem the notch space to keep the triple from being overtightened and snapped. The top triple is aluminum and snaps easily. Thats also the reason they are hard to find. Just about every old bike I've had with non factory bars had a cracked triple. I can post a pic if you'd like.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

I would love that! I cant picture it now.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

AH! I get it... My set up in a bit different but I will check to see if there is anything there. Thanks for talking the time to do that!

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Switched my rings out so that they are in the correct position. You were right hilsy... they were chamfered on the lighter colored ones.

I also soda blasted my cylinder head with a DIY blaster. i need to modify the set up but it does work. Bless science and the Venturi effect.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

I put this on the $50 Mod thread but figured it would be cool to tie it in on my thread as well. I got a powder gun from Joe and figured I would need a way to blast parts as I learn. I saw some cheap easy blast boxes being made on indestructables.com so I figured fuck it, it's only $50 and if it sucks ass, I'll just go buy one from HF.

Rubber Maid Box:

Light:

Grill to rest the parts on:

Plexi:

Air Hose:

Rubber Hose :

Epoxy:

PVC Coupler:

Now I cut the holes and put the PVC in for the gloves:

DSC_1098.jpg

I cut the top an inch shorter than the plexiglass so I could epoxy the plexiglass in:

DSC_1100.jpg

I epoxied the glass down and placed bricks on the top to secure it down:

Hole for the light:

Hooked up the hoses:

And from the top down:

It works! I mean for a $50 blast box. There was very little media on the floor.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

That's a really cool blast box. Liking the build, too. Keep it up.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Streetfighter89: I didnt get a chance to measure this w/e but it's a standard 18". Ill give more info soon.

Dudes... this engagement thing is really working out well for the workshop. Saturday morning my girl came home carrying this in her hand:

So I got it together this morning:

DSC_1117.jpg

And hooked it up to my box:

Then I started in:

It works REALLY well. It's still such an awesome thing to think that baking soda is shredding through paint like it does. I really cant get over it.

I need to do some modifications to the box and maybe add a small shop vac to the set up. It reminiscent of the most wicked snow storm once I get going and the more media that's in the bottom of the box, the worse it gets. It's so hard to see that I waste about a 1/4 of a tank just trying to see what I'm blasting. Even still... the way that the piece comes out in comparison to sanding or wire wheel is worth all the hassel (I know, I know.. I'm the one who didnt want to buy a proper blasting box).

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Ya, baking soda is great stuff. I dont have a booth at all, so i have to blast outside. You know baking soda kills grass?

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

I did not know that, Tim (Home Improvement throw back). Im glad you told me though b/c I would hate to kill what little grass I have right now.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

I sold my other bike today to pay for the rest of this build. cant wait for the post man to start coming to my house.

I would really appriciate if you can check on this for me. 18" sounds good for the beginning, now if its 1.85-2.15 wide it would be a great and reliable donor for my project.

Re: The Poor Boy - A Tale Of A CB550

Streetfighter89: I'll take exact when I get home but a search on SOHC4 told me aluminum, 19"x1.85. Stay tuned.

I bought some Carb Kits and Caliper kits last night. Plan on getting alot more things shortly.

Dynatek... worth the money? If not what other coils can I get that are worth a shit? I have heard old VW coils?
