The Tortoise: cb350 -Now with metal flake

Re: The Tortous: cb350

Thanks, you guys are always to kind..

JRK, I wish i was the one who made it and i could make a how-to for you, as it is i only sort of know how/what he did it. I'll see if i can get him to do a quick walkthrough for you.

Re: The Tortous: cb350

WOW! I remember finding pictures of this bike what seems like years ago (cleverly named btw). I think it's what really got me excited about building a cafe racer. I think we officially need a sticky with all the cb/cl 350 build. seems like there's to many to keep track of and there's a lot of good stuff in em' stuff for people like me that are building one.

Re: The Tortous: cb350

Absolutely amazing bike.

Did you have to flange the header tubes where they hook up to the engine? After reading through, I am completely sold on the 2-1 on these 350's. I'm trying to gather as much info as I can so I can get started on my own set. Thanks for all the info, pics, and inspiration!

Can not wait to see this thing in motion.

bob.

Re: The Tortous: cb350

I figured it was high time I joined this site!

Hi, all. There's a lot of freakin'-awesome builds on here that I really really want to get my own bike build going... what with all the other projects I've on the backburners, and school, it's not looking like I'll get my own anytime soon, so I've been helping myverygoodfriend, Mr. Uniac, with his :)

Gosh it's been a while.

Bike's more or less done, haven't really had a spare moment to put the finishing touches on it. But that should change in the next few weeks. I just received the last part I was waiting on to finish it off. Thanks to my good friend. The test Video is below.

Let me know what you think.

*snip*

It's the standard trailer light that BCR uses in there seats. As you can see, it contains a Running light, Brake light, and signals.

HUGE thanks to Philip for building it for me!

More updates to follow in the next week or so.

It took me far too long to get that light built for yah, buddy!

Basically I bought fistfuls of high-power LEDs from the local surplus shop and put them down on a piece perf-board in a pleasing manor; connected up the anodes to the cathodes, resistors to taste (actually, they were required for current limiting and to dim a couple clusters; I was seeing spots for hours after my first tests!) and you should be good.

I found the voltage drop across the LEDs to be ~3V @120mA draw, so I put them in series of four to make a 12V compatible cluster, then eight clusters in parallel-- two for each turn signal, two for break, and two for daytime-running.

Thanks for the kind words on the light. This guy's clocked a lot of hours on this bike, let me tell you!

That reminds me, Uniac; beers on Monday-- can I get a look at the bike? Haven't seen 'er in a while, bud. I'll bring my camera ;)

Philip.

Re: The Tortous: cb350

that light is something i have been wanting to tackle. yours came out great. it will be a super addition to the rest of the work onthis build. well done guys

Re: The Tortous: cb350

I have a bcr tank and seat combo on my cb350 as well. trying to figure out what to do with the turn signals for both front and back. I'm limited in size on the front right due to the mc being in the way. Was debating doing the single led lights but worried about them not being dot approved. I think that your rear lights are a little too complicated for a guy like me. Nice work, I'll be looking forward to seeing your finished masterpiece.

good idea, like the 2smoke collective

Re: The Tortous: cb350

The brake light looks fantastic!

Can't wait for it to be running, let me know when you want to start her up, I want to be there to witness it!

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

I HATE LEDs! (not really they are too pretty to hate)

So it's been a really long time since I wired the bike(well worked on anything on it really), I was finally able to tackle the signals since I got the taillight back last week. The Flasher (electronic 5 pin, supposed to work with just LEDs) was pre-wired, just hook up the lights and give it a try. Nothing, weird, maybe it's resistance, so I hook up a 194 bulb. That does the trick, but it's buzzing like crazy, the LEDs are flashing so fast you can't see them, just hear the relay. So Philip comes over, we check the wiring, it all seems right.

After researching at work I pick-up grote relay specific for LEDs. 3 pin with external ground. Hook it up, NOTHING again, thinking It's got to be related to resistance, I hook up the 194 bulb again and they start flashing. Great, but wait this doesn't make sense the flasher relay is made for LEDs, it should work fine with just the tail light and bar ends. After some thinking and some research I find that the damn relay needs a 1amp draw to operate the coil on the flasher. Turns out that I was too efficient in my goal of using as little energy as possible and now have to wire resistors in-line anyway, atleast they'll be small.

So keep that in mind if you're going this route, or build yourself a LED timer circuit to avoid the problem all together!

Updated pictures and videos soon.

Matt,

I'll let you copy my flasher unit, total cost was $5 and works perfectly. I think I have all the extra resistors and relays to make 2 more units for you and dip as well.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

Had some spare time when we were checking the signal wiring, so we wheeled the bike out and took a few pics. As you can see it's comming along, but there is a bit left to do before it leave the garage.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

Wow looks sweet. I love benji's work. That tailight sounds tricky to build. Might try to tackle some led's on my next build just for the challenge. Keep it up.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

Looks very god.

I might suggest bringing some brown into the tank to break up the white....but it looks great!

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

and it runs...needs the carbs synced.

Bike keeps stalling because i was playing with the kill switch(very nervous having wired this from scratch)

somebody embed this for me, lol

wow you're funny looking (that's for forgetting to invite me over for the start)

Glad you got it running!

Sweeeet! I'll have to stop by sometime soon to hear 'er run!

Something fell off the bike (and landed near the kick stand's foot) when you started it the first time.

I didn't forget, I had no signal to call while on p4, so i taped it to show you. It's like you were there :p

Re: The Tortoise: cb350

The list is whittling down. If i wasn't so anal about things being "perfect" this would have been done weeks ago.

Left to do:
Machine starter block off plate (sunday)
Fab steering stops (sunday)
setup clutch (this infernal thing is driving me NUTS!)
Grease bearings, swingarm, clutch etc
Install chaingaurd (need it to pass safety)
Locktite everything

Does anybody have any tips for setting the clutch on these? It's either too loose or too tight. I followed the direction in the manual without out any luck.

Re: The Tortoise: cb350, UPDATE 04/15/2010

update:

Officially plated and on the road!!! I just got the bike back from Kickstart cycles. I'd like to thank Tony and Noel and anyone else who got this thing running the way it is.

A few issues:
-I think the charging system isn't up to running a HID setup in the headlight. Going to wire a switch inline of the headlight and see if I can sort that out tomorrow. I'd hate to have to replace the charging unit with a ricksmotorsport unit.
-The led's in the taillight are pulsing like crazy and running light is too bright. Looks like it'll need a resistor and a capacitor to smooth out the power.
-The little mirror I ordered with the oberon bar ends needs to be larger.

The thing runs great, steady at speed, a few flatspots in the powerband, but nothing i didn't expect from running stacks and stock carbs. Plenty enough power for me and it feels fairly comfortable.

Again thanks to Tony and anyone else who had a hand in this!

I'll take some pictures of the finished project tomorrow
