TX500 build

Man, I guess it's time for all of us to come out of the closet oops, I mean garage. I thought I was the only one spending time in my garage sitting on my bike. I always had one eye on the door :-X. Now it's all out in the open.
JRK, that is going to be one bad ass ride. You have poured your heart and sole into it and it shows. Great Work man!!!

This build is really great. It got me started in on mine again. Are going to shorten up the bars some? I did, and it helped tighten the look. Those 25 dollar Ebay wonders come a little wide and made my bike look like the Flying Nun.

TOM!!!! killer idea man! love it, going to mock up the controls and pull out the pipe cutters! what a great idea brother... thanks i will def be cutting them down! about 1/2 in i figure... i am a really wide guy so i wanto still be comfortable... but then again i am not worried about comfort on this scoot!

I was able to get 1.5 to 2 inches off of mine. It made the front end look a lot tighter. Of course my bike is pretty small, and the bars just looked over scale. I put foam grips on first, but they were LAME, so i went with a black gel grip that has an old school look. Now get back in the garage, I want to see that thing done!

THANKS FOR THE TIP! well tonight i tackeled the MONSTER 7in headlight, when i got the bike the throttle side of the bucket was all beat in as was the show ring... baseball bat accident i am told... i have been using JB weld to fix it and get it all smooth... a few weeks ago i did the bucket in white... was not happy with that so i took it down to bare metal again, touched up the JB weld... smooth the whole thing out again and then hit it with the same powder i did the frame with. as with the whole bike i also dry mixed in some flake with the powder and then ultra cleared it to tie the whole bike together... while it was apart of course i polished everything including all the screws and the inner show ring... made a huge diff! I like the show rings and buckets to match.. makes a HUGE diff in the headlight appearance. I then did a minor mock up wiht the guages... NICE! the black powder i used on the trees bolts really stands out! well worth all the BS to get it right... could not resist so i pulled off the padding i had on the down tubes... SICK, now i am again feeling the white paint!

I still think the lamp needs a visor... what you guys think?

Joe,
I have an idea that I have not heard expressed here, yet. Take your engine side covers off (again) and fill in the 'YAMAHA' with JB Weld, then use some of that chrome powder on them. I think it would be kinda cool having a bike with only your brand on it. What say you?

Beautiful. Very detailed. My opinion is let the visor be the last thing on your built. After all is done, fix it and see. If not compatable, screw it.. ;D

Yeah, I too think it would be cool to de-brand the bike's sidecovers. If you want to post it to me, I could fill it in with some TIG bead. They you'll just have to sand it down and polish her. Perhaps in exchange for some powderwork. PM me if interested.

Also, I'm using those same gauges on my RD400. They really are the dogs balls. I think I'm going to mount mine below the tree so they don't stand so proud. The headlight ears fix the height of the headlight, so hopefully it will not interfere with the clocks. I just got all my stuff back from powder, so I should be reassembling everything this weekend--famous last words.

Also, I haven't gone through your full build, but if you haven't done so yet, I'd be interested in seeing your powder setup: the oven/s, equipment, etc.

--Thanks, Chris

my oven is a household elect oven that i have made some hangers for inside... i have acceess to a oven plenty big to do a frame at Seans (www.thepowderpro.com) he lets me use his big oven to do any frames i have... I also have another buddy that does car frames so i can use that whenever i want as well... my media blaster is the same one you can get at harbor freight (http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=93608) I shoot black dimond sand typically... i made my spray booth out of 2x4's and dry wall (basicly made a room with vents) created my own vent system for it using box fans mounted inside the wall and house hold furnace filters ... i use this same booth to do my painting as well... my air comressor is a 33 gallon 1.6 hp sears as well as a 13 gallon air compressor in the garage that i use... both have 2 moisture catches on it, and independant regulators... i use a eastwood hobby gun, as well as their pro gun (allows you to ajust current) not nessassary unless you are doing alot of frames and stuff... i use the hobby gun all the time... i will try and sneak back into my shed to snap a few pics of the set up... nothing spectacular, but i work with what i have and can afford... after the wedding i will build a barn in back that is set to just powder and paint... that is where my shop will set up solid routes... the garage works fine now but the insurance man is not to happy... (can not work on others bikes without insurance!)

debadging would and IS something i typically do on all my builds! but on this one the TX500 motor was only made for 2 years, i have altered it to work with an oil cooler. lots of people that are really into old bikes or old yamaha's would apprechate that... that is the reason that i am going to keep it on there... have a buddy that talked about engraving "Knapp edition" above where it says yamaha on the side case, but we will see... i was originally going to just fill it and sand it down and shoot it black... but i kind of like it, we will see how it looks after the letters are painted up nice and clean...
remove the side covers... ahh i have gone back and forth on this one many times! still not sure what i will do. if i do i will need to move the battery and crap, not that big of a deal... either that or just leave it and show it off... we will see, i plan on cutting them up a bit to make them look a bit diff than off the shelve.

Love the powder on the headlight! looks much better than the white! I agrre with keeping the logos as well... That bike should be PROUD to be a tx500!

woah, you have a cabinet? Ive been trying to figure out where the hell to go to get mediablasting done around here! Lets make a trade. All I really need done right now is my motor (which is in pieces.) Tell me what you think.

btw those gauges are really cool, they are aftermarket right?

Man this thing is going friggin rock. I have never considered goin white on a bike but you have certainly changed my opinion...
