Un-remarkable BMW re-fresh. DONE.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

HAHAHHA. BOUT RIGHT!!! ::)

I just wish I had it to test things before and after cleaning injectors.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Amazon wants $240 for the damned thing. So I got a good deal.

"Good deal" becomes is a very relative term when buying for a BMW.

Not to mention it will be priceless when the Heating and Air guy tells me furnace needs replaced and I whip this out to test it myself.

Ive said it a million times and I will say it again. "Pressurized water does not belong inside a house."

Currently my leaking shower needs a new valve. Argh!

and as you know just dropped $90 to replace leaking Bunn pot.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Messing around, checked start sw contacts. Found, depending on how I pushed and wiggled it. I have less than desirable 1.8 ohms at best and up to around 12 ohms.

Opened it up and surprised to find its nothing more than a cheesy, sorta exposed pair of leaf (oxidized green) contacts.

Cleaned em up and now a much better solid 0.4 ohms, EVERYTIME.

Also, double checked TPS for proper function, as there are 2 separate switches inside. One works at throuttle opening the other at WOT. Both read .5 ohms. 8)

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

You're making me feel guilty about NOT doing this to (at least) my winter K75RT . . . and I'm an electrical engineer . . .

Must have had fun keeping all the tiny pieces together once you took the kill switch apart!

Dude, I was pleasantly surprised. No springs to deal w or nothing. Just a single screw on the bottom of the control. The whole thing opens as one piece, then simply pop the easy to,get to Jesus clip, off the button. And viola, it comes off as pictured. I was careful not to,drop any small parts. Nothing came apart unexpectedly. Just cleaned it up and back together again.
A 5 minute job. Happily. :)
I will incorporate into my spring tune up schedule, as it can be done while waiting for oil to drain.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Haha ;D It looked like the "copper contact jumper ring" for the kill sw could come off. But I didnt pull on it to try. Just cleaned it up as is.

If you do open it up let me know if yours has a gasket or something. Mine didnt...so water could just run down in there onto the contacts. In rain or even washing the thing.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Will do. I can say that after literally hundreds of washings, I have never had trouble with poor electrical contacts on the K75RT, which sees winter duty. Sometimes after the bike is dry, I'll notice that the turn signal switches are a bit sticky, so I spray some electrical contact lubricant (a CRC product, but don't recall the exact name) upward into them and exercise them.

I do use the kill switch every time I shut the engine down, a practice I learned from riding my Harleys. (They actually specify the "correct" way to shut down the engine in the owner's manual.) Oddly enough, it seems you're not supposed to shut down Italian bikes that way. So on my Ducati and my Moto Guzzi, I don't.

Probably doesn't make a shit's worth of difference on any of them . . .

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

The signal sws are in there along w the start and kill. But you have to remove more screws to get to them. But yeah, very little protection to stop water from getting to them either. And probably not able to drain and dry as readily as start and kill.
It just a bit surprising to me, the rest of the switches and connectors on this K seem to be pretty top notch for 80s era stuff.

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

I really dislike how reading updates to this thread seems to trigger so much guilt on mine...

Sorry guys, Im really just kinda biding my time. Til, Dave lets me know parts are painted and ready to pickup.

I find if I take a break during a project it can sometimes be hard for me to get the ball rolling again.
So keep working to maintain my own excitement and motivation.
And finding all these little odds and ends, as I go just makes it a better machine and all the while Im learning.

So, only been posting about 3/4 of the stuff.
I just didnt want to bore you guys to death, posting each little detail thing.
But now making one big post it dont quite seem so boring. ;D

So, here goes w some stuff I didnt intend to post. LOL

got a good deal on a real nice, full set of turn signals.
fork reflectors replaced. (originals were cracked)
NOS clutch control lever going in.
Sand blasted and epoxied grills gloss black
replaced cracked and welded shift lever
Fresh bolts for rear wheel going in soon. (A couple of them just felt a bit funky last time I torqued em.)
and cleaning scrubbing rubbing and buffing...ugh!

So, dont feel guilty. LOL. I wouldnt be riding her if finished anyways. Our forecast is ONE sunny day amongst next 15 days of rain, wind at 50-60f. Cause Illinois SUCKS! So, yes take your machines out for a spin for me. And post up a couple pics. 8)

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Nice dude... she's gonna be a clean and reliable K when you get the paint work back...

(Just sold the 360 off btw I give up)

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

I can see that this is going to be too pretty to ride . . . both of mine have the black engines, and the winter bike (the RT) has a bit of a stripe up the front of the engine where the paint has been blasted off by road salt and gravel kicked up by the front wheel (and yes, I do have the Fenda Extenda).

Knowing what BMW parts cost (I replaced a clutch lever on my RT last spring after dropping it in a parking lot), you will have a small fortune in this bike. But what you have here is QUALITY, something I am not seeing in the modern BMWs (and some of this is due to environmental regulations that have caused them to use fasteners that now rust). Hope you hang on to this one!

This is my forever bike. I wont own any more bikes after this one. It will never be this pretty again, I can assure you.

Being patient watching ebay I have scored some awesome deals on most of these parts.

I paid $150 for my 360 and got more $ wrapped up in it, than this BMW. 8)

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

You also rebuilt that 360 like 27 times. LOL

Re: A rather un-remarkable BMW re-fresh.

Automatic-kickstand-picker-upper. Adjusted and working.

This is just too much, LOL ;D
