Actually this is my bike; http://www.westhills-honda.com/fiche_section_detail.asp?section=120282&category=MOTORCYCLES&make=HONDA&year=1974&fveh=2882

and it doesn't look to have a ball bearing. did I miss it? I actually tried to put one in and I couldn't get the cover back on. I guess it works differently. the end of the rod is rounded and fits in to a little cap on the face of the basket. We'll see.

Sorry for the jack Curb.

this is one of my favorite builds man! keep it up!!
I cannot wait to see that seat on it!!!

What da what?! How did I go this long without reading up on your post? Crazy build man. Glad to see it coming along. That seat is going to look insangerous. Good move on the black jugs ;)

Wooo! looks radical man!

Ive vanished for awhile, been stupid busy with other shit - but the build is moving! hopefully I can overload my thread with an update this weekend.

No progress lads. Been away from home. In a hotel room working on my "blog"

Getting to be a cool collection.

Other then that, once I get outta here, Im going to look at a parts bike for my 175. Its raining out & I dont have a tarp, but if the deals right shes taking a bath on the drive home.

take care,

Chad

It's cool Curb. Can't work on the bike ALL the time. If there are some parts in particular you need, let me know. I've got so much crap laying around out here and might have some extra.

And I just wanted to add:

de' ja vu. Check it out! $140 Canadian pesos. Titled even...maybe!

A bath it was. Was pissing rain the entire drive home. Shes been inside 4 years at a high school in Oakville. Has lots of compression. Engines in great shape. Tires ok. Def. worth the money I say. I want to put the front end on my cb200 perhaps & ride it this summer.

Big R. Notice it has the stator cover I wanted. That was the main selling point. haha.

The photo you loaded up is a yamaha racer from thailand. I travelled a bit through, & oh my. The bikes there are incredible. As that pic shows.

Stoked!

Here is my idea for the front mount for the seat. The material is brass coated steel I think. Approximately 1mm thick. If you guys think thats too thin Ill swap it out for alittle thicker gauge steel.
As shown in photos:

The entire piece of steel will be adhered to the wood (premium PL)
Side flanges tacked to side of wood (blue nails in photo)
Gasket material for padding adhered to the steel (black strips under blue nails) This will buffer between the seat & siderails on bike
Front flange mounts to the center down tube on the frame (blue bolt in photo)

I want to keep the mounts discreet. Space under there is tight, so thats why Im trying to use a really thin gauge steel

Thoughts?

I would use a heavier gauge for sure. Bigger is always better when it comes to hinges, and anything holding your ass to the bike, ya dig? ;D

Also, I was going to mount mine in a similar fashion, but ran into clearence issues with the tank... Dont want to see ya nail anything into that beautiful seat, and it not work perfectly.

Thanks Von. Ive never really shaped metal etc. Im heating mildly, vicing, then bending & finishing with a body hammer. That wont weaken my steel to much eh? Im not bending back & forth for final shape. Just one smooth bend mostly.

Im going for a thicker gauge then. Thats kinda why I used this steel first. Cause it was easy to bend & rough it in to show this crowd (you, so far)

Ive figured the tank. Not using the original rubber mount. But making one up & bolting the tank to the frame. The seat will clear...

Thanks again for advice. These are the things that really matter. Safety first!

Better to use aluminum or steel for this kinda thing? Bendability & strength once bent.

Better off going with steel for strength. And whenever you go to bend it, try to find some tubing to place in the crease. A 90 degree bend from a vice is weaker than a 50mm radius.

Good idea though!

+1 to bigR.

If you can bend the easily steel by hand, its too thin. Imagine if the seat was up and you leaned against it... That a lot of leverage side to side. Could bend the mount pretty easily if its too thin.

You guys are thinking its a hinge? Dont know why. It is a fixed seat. Will not hinge at all. So in that case will it be strong enough? Also putting a mounting bracket on the back of the seat as well.

So itll be mounted to the frame in two places. The rear bracket has more mounting room, with so itll be heavier duty. No hinge action.

Yup

I kinda thought it could be a hinge. Is it going to be load bearing at all or is the wood going to be resting on the frame? If it's just holding the seat down (not holding you up) than it doesn't need to be too thick

BigR. Its just for keeping the seat down. I carved the seat so it fits over the rails. So side to side, it shouldnt move at all...even without mounting.

Theres no hinge. No load. Im still going to make it alittle thicker.

Thanks

Well heck, you could use brass or something then. As long as you don't trailer it, your weight will hold it down just fine.

Keep it up Curb.

Shit. It looked like a hinge of some sort to me as well... Whoops. Ya if its just holding it down, your fine.
