1971 SL350 Father & Son Project

Very cool. I am trying to rebuild a basket case XL 350 on a budget, this will help me save some money for sure. Too bad I don't have access to a laser cutter anymore :( lol

The self making gasket trick is incredibly helpful. Thanks for the insight!

Thanks man, just FYI a thin layer of grease is best and dirty or dark grease even better.

Well the bike runs!

Now to stop some oil leaks coming from behind the side covers. I think it's the cam seals.

Thanks, it wasn't too bad, I think it took about 10 kicks.. It's amazing to think that this is a 45 year old bike.

Replaced the rockers shaft o rings and made new gaskets for the side covers. Turns out I put the previous gaskets on backwards too. So I'm sure that contributed to the leaks. Nevertheless the bike runs great and it no longer leaks. Time for the tank, seat and tail light..

Not much done lately, except I got the kickstand and spring on the bike.

Need to start working on a seat and a tail light soon.

Mocking up the bike with a spare tank while I figure out the seat, fenders and tail light.

Lol, Clem you're something else. Yeah I'm leaning that way, my wife and I like the color scheme, but it's my sons bike, and he wants a blue tank... But he did mentioned that he really liked this one as well once he saw it on there.

This is awesome. My dad bought back his enduro from the guy he sold it to in the mid 70s when I was 12 years old and I watched him rebuild the whole thing. I was instantly hooked. I got a mini bike soon after and rebuilt the engine in shop class. I rebuilt/restored my first vintage bike at age 19 by myself. All these years later I'm still doing it, all because of my dad.

A few updates since my last post.
Got a cheap seat from eBay

Problem is.... It's cheap and it doesn't fit the rear hoop I had on there very well. But it's not so bad. It flows pretty good with the tank. I just have to modify a few things to make it fit right.

So, the rear hoop I had in there goes and I put a rounder one on and added a kick up at the tail. I also modified the seat end to accommodate the contour of the rear fender

De rusted the tank, sealed it

Put the rear fender on and you can see on this photo the rear seat now flows with the rear fender.

I still gotta smooth out the rough edges on the fender and put some final touches on the mounting for it and the seat.

Up next, double check the wiring from the stator, make sure I'm getting good voltage, battery is charging etc. then make a custom enclosed battery tray

Install tail light
And I'm sure I'll think of some other things before the bike is worthy to take around for a break in ride.

But it's coming along

I like that seat a lot. That's an eBay seat?
Yeah Eric. A few things. It takes about 3 weeks to deliver. Mine took about 17 days (not too bad) price is in the $75 -$85 range. Quality is about a 7-8 for the price. But it's easy to work with actually. I ended pulling the fabric back at the tail section exposing the plastic and foam and cut the plastic mold with a heat wire gun/tool I have (it cuts thru plastic and foam like butter) sanded the rough edges and pulled the fabric back and re stapled.

I wish I took pictures of the process, but I got tunnel vision while trying to get things done that I didn't even stop to do so.

I have another seat in mind that I eventually want to shape and mold myself (when the bike actually becomes a cafe racer) but I wanted the bike to be upright for learning purposes.
