1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange" D-U-N Done! Well, at least for now.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

You know, you could probably sweet talk Chris into TIGing it up for ya if you'd be willing to ship. He's actually not that bad of a welder....He's no Kanticoy by any means, but he'll do in a pinch.... ;)

Joking of course. But seriously, I bet he'd cut you a great deal if you'd be interested (sorry for pitching you without permission Chris). Last tank I shipped to Troy was $13 USPS, so that's not bad.

Can't wait to see your build done dude.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Ya know I actually considered that. I sent the rims to Chicago to have Joe and Sean Powder them. They did a super job by the way!! But I have local options here so I'm just going to deal with it here. plus I don't want Chris to see my first paint job ::) (I made sure the camera was kind to me)

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Yeah, after shipping both ways, he could have just had it done locally. I would have spent $10 just in gas making sure it was fully purged. I can't have my pretty face blown off now can I :)

Very true man. You won't be able to put up those shirtless GAP style ads for MotoFiaccone if you go scarring yourself up....all black and white and melancholy.

Sorry for the threadjack...I couldn't resist picking on Chris!!!

But yeah, you're right. I didn't think about the gas cost.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Little update for you fellas,

I'm still waiting for the Por-15 to arrive but we had a relatively warm day here (around 40 degrees) so I got some garage time in. First up a pic of the tank with the Yamaha decals applied. Looks sharp I think. 8) you can see the little leak spot on the rear corner. Sorry about the I-phone pics the old lady has the digital at work today.

I received my taillight this week as well and needed to decide how best to mount it. I went with a real basic Cat eye style.

I had some flat stock laying around and I decided this was good opportunity to practice some welding. I am going to show my work here and I hate to do it because its ugly. made uglier by the fact that I'm still using flux core wire. I am aching to get the gas set up but need to find the $$. I signed up for a welding class through the local adult ed program so I'm psyched to start that in January. Pictures tell the rest.

I told you it was ugly ::)

Cleaned up okay. :)

Its not tightened down in the last picture which is why it looks a little squirrely. I wanted it tucked as much as possible but still leaving room to clear the tire's travel. This position should accomplish that. I am DEFINITELY going to paint the light housing black. Whole thing took about a half hour start to finish.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

You people are asses :) But that was exactly what this thread needed: a little lightening up.

Hey, be careful mounting the taillight that way. My tire smacks the taillight, which is why I'm going to use a Crime Scene Choppers taillight mounted up higher. If you look at pics of my taillight, that's why it is always crooked.

Put your wife on the bike and you site passenger--unless she's heavier than you :). Then bounce up and down to make sure it won't hit.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

Dude, I'm big enough (6'1" 220) that I can almost bottom the thing out myself. ::) I remembered your problem with that and did a lot of figuring. One thing I noticed is that my hoop is a couple inches longer than yours which helps a bit in this department.

Re: 1972 Yamaha R5 350 "A Clockwork Orange"

It is the stock R5 tank Mine is a '72 but I believe they are the same from '70-'72

Glad you're liking it. When I'm done I don't care if it's 10 degrees out I'm taking a ride.

Dude, I have no idea what you look like so don't take any of what I am saying personal; I CAN'T STAND that messy "I just rolled out of bed and I am too cool to comb my hair" look. What the hell is that? -MBS
