ok, all the parts are almost in i figure about 2 weeks they will all be here. then it will be all on me to do the build. just the way i wanted it.
the only thing i don't have is rear sets. i am going to make these and when i am done i will put them up here in detail so you can all check them out. as far as more pics of the bike. i will run electric tomorrow and paint and by this weekend if all goes according to plan the bike will be over there and i should be working on it everyday on out till it is done or if i don't feel like it or waiting on paint, powder, or unexpected part buys. i will try to post each step of process of the build. if someone wants more detail of a specific area of the build say something or forever hold your peace :-X . the bike i am going to model it after is this one. later guys!
That is a beautiful bike! Do you know what type of tank and exhaust is on it?

Re: 1978 cb550k rebuild

sorry I didn't chime in earlier, and you may have already addressed this, but watching that video, it sounds as if not all cylinders are firing? I revs erratically? Did all the pipes get hot?

Anyway. look forward to seeing this come together. You've picked a great bike to work on.

Re: 1978 cb550k rebuild

yeah the carbs are in bad shape but can be fixed and the timing is likely off. who ever had the bike did not care enough to learn how to fix it.also the carbs are out of sync and a fuel line that transfers gas from one carb to another is toast.

Re: 1978 cb550k rebuild

ok well did a couple weld jobs and about the 3rd time i came up with something good ill put pics of the final configuration later here is some of the process of getting to where i am at now. the rest of the build is on hold till i get a new smaller battery to fit under the seat. does anyone know of a small battery that will still let me use the electric start?thanks guys.

Re: 1978 cb550k rebuild

Lookin' good there sabre. Now, the battery issue - you know what its running stock? Many older bikes can get away with smaller batteries than they came with, its just a matter of understanding that they'll need to be kept in good condition and may not be the happiest if you don't ride for a few weeks. All that amounts to is keeping the terminals clean, the fluid level topped up, and riding frequently. Easy!

At the moment I'm running my GS850 (stock 14Ah) on a 9Ah and it seems to have no troubles. I'd say I may get away with a 6Ah but that'd probably be pushing the limits. You'll probably be fine with a 6Ah battery at a guess, although it'd help to knnow what the bike ran stock.

Cheers - boingk

Re: 1978 cb550k rebuild

12v12ah stock thinking about running 12v6ah but not sure if that will let me run the electric start. i would be nice to find a small 12v12ah battery that would free up more space under the seat for the electronics. i guess i could go with out the electric start. just looking for ideas here so i can continue with the mock up/build. and a newbie question it seems like the amp hour is equal to the capacity of storage of power. is this so? could i use a small 12v9ah or 8ah or 7ah and so on? for anyone else here what did you guys cram under the seat lol? until then ill be looking through the forums i guess. i plan on doing some long distance trips and city driving too anyways...thanks boingk.

ok so after reading for about 3 hours on jetting i think i have a good size to start with. 105 main jets will be taking the place of the old 90 jets. the air stacks and 4 into one are gonna lean this thing out so i'll start here. if anyone else is running a 1978 550k with pd46c carbs and 4 into 1 and stacks let me know what luck you have had with your set up. later!

This guy has PD46c carbs and details the whole setup. EDBIKERii http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=20869.msg258435#msg258435

I have PD46A on a 78 so I am going with the same setup and I will be running velocity stacks with 4-2 drag pipes. I am still waiting on the push-in jets and a Morgan Carbtune to come in the mail.
